Tasting the Sauce (Cells part 2)
In this video, I build upon the previous lesson of using Cells with the Pentatonic Scale (or music's little black dress) by adding 2 notes to the scale. By adding 2 notes you make entirely different scales or modes. By using the "Cells" idea, you can experiment with different notes and "Taste the Sauce" to see if you like it.
I don't script or edit these videos and I misnamed the scale around 6:38 when I add Bb and F# = it makes a G MELODIC MINOR SCALE, not G HARMONIC MINOR that would have an Eb in it and not the E natural that is present in the example. The G Harmonic Minor happens later in the video! I felt the information and method was good enough to not redo the entire video! Thanks for your patience!

Thank you for the info. I just ordered the same guitar. You mentioned you use a Bose. I have a l1pro16. Any suggestions for setting on the bose(tonematch) etc...?
Great question!! I don’t use a the Bose Tonematch mixer, I just roll some of the bass off on the guitar. I like the piezo/mic mix at about 2 o’clock . If there is a classical guitar setting on the Tonemix, I’d start there and adjust to taste. Good luck!

I’m so torn between buying this guitar or a Godin nylon to practice early morning while my wife and kids are sleeping.
I have never played a Godin nylon string guitar. Many famous players do. In terms of which is “more quiet” and portable, probably the Yamaha. I have seen videos showcasing the sound of both and they sound very similar. Keisel guitars makes the NS-1 and Sadowski makes an electric nylon if you want to go the custom route. Good luck!!

Thanks for the Video! Im 65 and decided to learn guitar... I was going straight for aa Les Paul Studio not a traditional choice I know. Then I cam across this Yamaha. i like it. To learn and to grow for my personal enjoyment. What do you think.?
Thanks for watching and Commenting! I have never been a fan of heavy (weight) guitars! The Les Paul is heavy - 8-10 pounds or so - about the same as my Schecter ( 8ish pounds) which I bought while my Parker (4 pounds) was getting frankensteined! The Yamaha Silent Guitar is around 4 pounds as well. Very light, easy on the shoulder. But you should get a guitar that is going to give you the most music options - if you like playing rock and blues styles - get the Les Paul, but if you want to play classical finger style music - then the Yamaha is the way to go. Hope this helps.
Great review, very detailed and fair. As I am a total beginner, do you think this would be a good first guitar? I like the idea it can be played quietly while my wife sleeps and such, and that it is light and portable. My budget for just the guitar is about $700 Max and I’ve been looking at mostly this, the Cordoba Stage, and Ibanez FHR10/TOD10. Thanks again!
Excellent question - I have never played the Cordoba or the Ibanez models, so I can't speak to how they feel, react to pedals, or loud amplification. Since you are a beginner, any of these models will be long term guitars for you. I think the only draw back to these instruments is you need amplification (except for the headphone jack on the Yamaha!) - good acoustic guitar amplification for classical guitar is harder to get - I guess 15watt Fender Acoustisonic might be an inexpensive way to go but I don't like the sound of Acoustic guitar amplifiers which is why I use the Bose S1 Pro. Before the Bose - I used a mixer and self-powered studio monitors!!! Good Luck!

Great question! I think to find out, all you need to do is put a set of normal tension nylon strings on it. People might look at you funny but I've certainly strung nylon strings on a steel string acoustic. Since this works with Piezo pickups - it "should" work but if it doesn't you didn't have to invest much to find out. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
A touring guitar tech once told me that sometimes the saddle needs to be sanded flat on that type of pickup. Happens on all guitars with that kind of pickup.

Interesting! I have a serious nickel allergy and this might be the only way I can play electric guitar. All the strings I've tried contain nickel including stainless steel. The only issue I see with this guitar would be the frets which are likely nickel.
It is possible they are nickel, I actually can't tell you, but my other guitar's frets are stainless steel, so maybe they are too - I can't tell from the specs. I suppose if you really wanted to, you could get it refretted with stainless steel frets and maybe that would help. Best of luck! Thanks for watching!

Use it with guitarlift ® but extract bottom part of yamaha silent ( dont use bottom accesesuar ) and see how comfortable
I have checked out the Guitarlift, it isn't terribly portable (meaning it doesn't fit in my case), so for gigs I use the strap.

Thanks for doing this review. Is there a reason you use a strap rather than a foot rest to get the guitar in the correct position? Do you just not like foot rests?
I don't use a foot rest with my regular classical guitar, instead I use a Sage Works guitar support. I found that by keeping my feet flat on the floor and my hips level that my lower back is happy with hours of playing. The silent guitar doesn't have a good portable support system outside of using a Strap. The guitar is light enough that it doesn't bother my shoulder and I get the benefit of keeping my feet flat on the floor. And at a lot of gigs I am standing and playing classical music/jazz/popular song....anyway, so strap it is! Thanks for watching, hope this is helpful.
Thanks very much for the quick response. I'm thinking of getting this guitar, but I am a little concerned about the mixed reviews I've seen regarding its ergonomics. Some say it's not comfortable to hold with thin, relatively sharp edge sides. Unfortunately, i can't find one in any of the local shops to try. I've tried playing a guitar with a strap but I found it difficult because it didn't feel stable. The guitar would move around too much as I tried to go up or down the neck. That's probably just me and may be something I could overcome with practice.
@@patrickhawley600 I play live on it multiple times a week and have not found it to be problematic but you do want to have a nice strap (wider is better). Once I set myself up, I think it feels close enough, maybe the neck is a couple of degrees closer to my left shoulder than when I am playing my classical. I still prefer my classical but for gigging in the situations I play in, the Yamaha wins every time. The pros out weigh any cons for me.

This is actually pretty neat. I have a classical guitar that I use for playing metal and stoner rock in low tunings. I like the dynamics from a classical guitar for those hard styles of music- provides a nice "bloom" effect for example for doom riffs. But its hard to bring out those dynamics with amplification and pedals. There aren't many examples out there of players using classical guitars with effects/distortion. There are more for steel string (ex Billy Strings). I've been wondering what pickup or combination of pickups to use for my classical. Usually when you play acoustic guitar through amps/effects you lose certain frequencies and get too much of others- it doesn't respond like an electric guitar. But this sounds pretty good. I will use this to inform my sound!

Thanks for review, but I got a question. Previously I already had SLG 200s, but I sold it after I moved to a good isolated flat and lived alone. Now live with my girlfriend and I think to buy it again. The issue is that my flat has 2 rooms separated by WC/Bad (Room 1 - WC/Bad - Room 2), but there are no doors at all. Kitched on the second floor also without any door between. If I remember SLG 200s was pretty silent, but metal strings are not silent. It would 100% help with closed door, but I think it will be still noticable in my situation in case I'm in room 1 and my girlfriend sleeping in room 2. This is why I'm taking a look on a Nylon version and I wanted classical guitar anyways :) Questio is, do you think that slg 200 N version will help in my case in comparison with slg 200 S? Probably if I will hard strumming, no, but if soft fingerstyle playing? Just learning something like tremolo or training songs like game of thrones, last of us etc...? Thanks for any info! :) p.s. its less important, but interesting point aswell - Do you know if this guitar exist with max 46mm neck? Normally I play steel strings and 45mm neck. So 52mm would be probably overkill and dont know if I will adapt to such differences here and there all the time. I'm not that professional, learning guitar only around 8 months.
I think the Nylon Silent Guitar is about as loud as a solid body electric guitar unplugged, not loud at all. If someone is watching tv or listening to music, they wont hear you at all. If it is really quiet, sure they will hear your practice but it isn't intrusive, not like an acoustic instrument. Hope this helps, thanks for watching and commenting!

Thanks for the excellent review. Guitarlift make a support for the Yamaha silent range although you may find it a little too bulky for travelling. As far as supports for classical guitars go however I can’t praise guitarlift enough, they are just incredibly stable and reliable. Best Wishes.

Hi, may I ask, what's the difference between slg200n and slg200nw? I'm planning to get one, thought that they will release a new version (waited for a couple years already), but also need a headset, any recommendations? :)
So the difference between 200n and 200wn is the size of the nut (width of the neck) I use the regular nut and it feels just like my classical guitar so I am not sure I would want the wide nut version. The guitar comes with Yamaha ear buds - they are good enough to get you rolling. I almost never play this with headphones on, just isn't how I am using it. @@warden8288 My experience with the silent guitar 200n is that it is very similar to my Alan Harold Chapman classical guitar. I play that guitar here czcams.com/video/o8WAfBH7xPU/video.html .. If you can play a wide nut version and a regular nut version side by side. I am not one for guitar "specs" as a way to determine whether or not I will like an instrument, it is all feel for me, so maybe it will be a good fit for you, maybe not. Hope this helps!

Gap between bridge and pickup under high e string is common for that type of pickup. Next time you change strings pull bridge out and put a scrap of typing paper on the pickup in that area. Could make another better shaped bridge, but paper is a reliable fix. Use layers cigarette paper for "perfect fit". Cheers.

I mean, interesting, but the only one that sounded good to me was that last Cmaj7 with the Dm-G elevator music.
Yeah, definitely a yawn worthy backing track, all of the notes played over it were from the same 7 natural pitches just with different organization. The last bit with the Cmaj7 was actually cascading 7 chords running through a cycle 4 using the 7 notes. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I am actually using my Bose S1 and a Boss pedal board for these videos. That is my primary gigging "rig" since it doubles as a personal monitor for PA sized events and runs totally on batteries. The JVM is for recording only at this point. I love it but it is heavy 40+ pounds. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Just learn chord inversions for every chord you can play, don't use a looper, don't use a capo, and if you want play blues learn the dominant 9 pentatonic not just minor pentatonic plus blues scale is a good start.
Thanks for watching and commenting! There are definitely many many possible ways to practice and learn music. With regards to loopers, I am a big fan of recording yourself as a tool for practice. If that is done with a looper, a phone, a cassette tape, a computer, 24 track studio ----- the how it is done is not really important or detrimental. Just do it and practice. Capos are another useful tool. If you want to play music with others who do not play guitar or understand the guitar, then it is important that the guitarist is able to share what they are playing in as concise a way as possible.
