Canoe Camping Upper Coosawattee River
The upper portion of the Coosawattee River runs southwest roughly 16 miles from the convergence of the Ellijay and Cartecay Rivers in Ellijay, Georgia into the the northeast end of Carters Lake. This portion of the river is rated as class II. We started our trip at Harrison Park in Ellijay at noon. We put in on the Ellijay River under the McCutchen Street bridge. It wasn’t long before the Cartecay River met the Ellijay on river left and we were off to the races on the upper Coosawattee. It’s all flat water paddling as we floated past the Gilmer County parks. Once we got past the old highway 5 bridge the river got wide and shallow with shoals as far as we could see. There were plenty of times I had to hop out and push/pull my heavy 15’6” canoe over rocks. The shoals got increasingly rough as the miles ticked by and gradually morphed into class II rapids. Noah flipped his kayak once towards the beginning of the trip but quickly learned how to maneuver and properly guide the kayak down all the largest rapids by the end of it. I took the canoe down some of the larger rapids but had to get out and sometimes bail out and guide the canoe down the largest ones as to not lose our gear. It was an exhausting run but we all had a blast. 12.5 miles downstream we finally made it to Jacob’s Landing where we set up camp for the night. It’s a big long bend in the river just below the last shoals the upper Coosawattee has to offer. It took us a little under 7 hours to paddle from Harrison Park to Jacob’s Landing. There’s a little tributary that goes over a noisy 15’ waterfall before dumping into the river directly beside the campsite. We strung our hammocks up, built a fire, and stayed up talking late into the night. The next morning we woke up to a calm river and sunny 65° air; it felt amazing. After snacking and packing we hit the river again for the final 3.5 mile stretch of flat water paddling to get to the Ridgeway Boat Ramp on Carter’s Lake. The boat ramp is located in an inlet fed by Tails Creek on river right. It took us about 2 hours to paddle from Jacob’s Landing to Ridgeway Boat Ramp. We all had a great time on this trip. Thanks for watching our adventure unfold. We’ll see you on the next one!

Noah and I started the adventure at the Beech Bottom Trailhead located in the southern Cherokee National Forest, Tennessee. We drove up the Cherohala Skyway from Tellico Plains, TN, stopping along the way to take in the views from the multiple overlooks. We took a left onto Old Santeetlah Road and then took an immedi...

Hidden in the hills of northwest Georgia is an abandoned town by the name of Estelle. The area was rich in iron ore and the town was owned by the Estelle Mining Company from the mid 1890s through the mid 1920s. Nothing remains of the town but there are still old concrete footers from old mining structures strewn about the woods. The most interesting remains of this once thriving iron ore operat...

I've been wanting to go to this...I'm in Ringgold and I have always heard about this.I have a mild obsession with trains and tunnels...Another cool tunnel with a crazy story. I lived in Richmond in Church Hill and the Church Hill Tunnel was right beneath me I'd walk by the closed up entrance everyday I walked down the hill to work....Also Nashville's underground tunnels that were used during prohibition. Every building downtown that is over 100 years old has an entrance to the tunnels in the basements

Boy do I miss living in GA where I lived for 11 years. I sold my 2 kayaks when I moved down and I’m now in the process of buying a new one at REI. I have kayaked the Chatahoochi in Suches and also took it down Etowah above Allatoona. I showed a brief part of your video to my wife, me 72 and her 66 now. She said let’s go shoot the arrows and go back up into the Blue Ridge again. I’m stoked and hopefully we’ll find a good weather window to camp too. Yeah the trail you are talking about follows the ridge line and dead ends at some private property. I’ve been to the end of it. Very narrow trail, nowhere to get turned around so you’ll have to back all the way out if you get to the end. There’s really nothing worth seeing down that way, the overlook is as good as it gets.
