  • Hidden in the hills of northwest Georgia is an abandoned town by the name of Estelle. The area was rich in iron ore and the town was owned by the Estelle Mining Company from the mid 1890s through the mid 1920s. Nothing remains of the town but there are still old concrete footers from old mining structures strewn about the woods. The most interesting remains of this once thriving iron ore operation are the 7 light gauge or “dinky car” railroad tunnels that were used to haul the iron ore out of the northwestern slopes of Pigeon Mountain. Today there is an obscure hiking trail called the Estelle Mines Trail that generally follows the old dinky car route from The Pocket parking area north towards the dead end of Estelle Mines Road. Follow our adventure as we hike and hammock camp this historic route through seven 100+ year old mining tunnels.

From highway 193, turn onto Estelle Mines Road. Go approximately 1.5 miles. There will be a road that cuts back to the left. Once you turn left you’ll immediately be able to see the entrance to the tunnel straight ahead. Good luck 💯🤙
