RCA Victor R52 Revival Part One
This is an old radio from the late 20's. Given what I found when testing out this radio, I will likely not do more than revive it. In part one I check as much as I can before deciding to go forward with this. In the process of learning about the circuit design of this radio, I discover things I haven't seen before. It is definitely unique, to me at least.

This is a revival of this old radio. It threw me a couple of curves along the way. I got fooled a couple of times. This is from around the mid thirties. Not sure if I can call it rare but there is absolutely no information about this radio, not even a picture. I think this same chassis was used in desktop radios. Saw a similar 1933 chassis. This radio might be slightly newer than that.
How do you size a resistor after swapping a selenium diode for silicon?

The typical approach is trial and error. Is there another way to do that? Now, some of you have already labeled me as crazy for even asking such a question. I won't argue with that. However, I thought it might be interesting to exp...

      It may not be a problem. Not all machines fail in the same way. I chose not to get a replacement part because the part was the same age as my failed machine and they wanted way too much for it. If the price had been more reasonable, I might have gotten the used part. In my case, I didn't need the recording capability and was able to find another multi-cd unit for half the cost of the replacement part. I hope you unit gives many years of service.

    Nice video, I was trying to see what links the door release to to eject button. Yours worked so you didn't need to address it. However, I think I might have figured it out from seeing your working one. Thanks. I would humbly suggest that it is a lot easier to remove the whole cassette mechanism from the box instead of taking the box apart. It makes reassembly much easier. But everybody has their own method. Thanks for making the video, it helped!

    I found out what the problem was after 4 days of testing every component in this entire system! YOU HAVE TO HAVE TAPE ON THE REELS AND ENGAGED BEFORE THE BUTTONS WILL LIGHT UP AND RUN THE TAPE REELS !!! GEEEEEEEZZZZ!!!! I was wondering why you never turned yours on without the tapes while testing! Seems like you might have mentioned that LOL!!!

    still trying to figure out the problem with mine. I completely went through it and cleaned all connections and all mechanical parts. Deep cleaned. I wasn't getting anything when pushing the play buttons no relays just the meters lit up, no lights in the buttons etc. after cleaning all of the switches, pots, circuit card connections I now have the center motor spinning with power on and I can hear one relay working on the control board. but neither tape motors are working. Maybe its a cap maybe the relays are dirty they dont look it. Are the button lights supposed to all be on all of the time or just when you press one?

    Please Help!! Hi I just bought one of these and It lights up but the play buttons do nothing, I am not an engineer but I do work on my own vintage tube amps if they have simple layouts. I took it out of the cabinet to clean it up and look for leaking caps or what ever I could see and it appears to be in good condition. What would you check if the buttons do nothing??

    • @oldelectronicsfan5136
      @oldelectronicsfan5136 Před 10 dny

      The first thing to check is the 22 pin connectors the the circuit boards are mounted in. Those can split apart where the wires go into them and that will break important connections. You can replace those with modern 44 pin connectors. That is not a fun job. I would also suspect that the micro switches need cleaning. I forget which video it was in but I showed how I cleaned them. That is a common problem with vintage micro switches. If none of that helps, I would download the service manual, which is available free, and start looking at voltages from the power supply.

      @@oldelectronicsfan5136 Thanks I had an update to my question after I did some cleaning on your 4th video in the comments. All those 22 pin connections are very good and clean like new and tight. The motor in the center is running but the upper two tape motors are not. I was hoping to hear some relays as I switched the buttons but only one relay at the bottom of the control board is clicking and middle motor was spinning then two of the four .1 uf +120 ohm 500 volt snubber caps blew. I have some old box style caps but they dont have resistors in them and I was considering running a resistor with these but don't know if it is supposed to be in series or parallel. Its all in this box style cap resistor thing and I can' t tell. Hmmmmmm

    • @oldelectronicsfan5136
      @oldelectronicsfan5136 Před měsícem

      If I were just, "soldering two wires together," then twenty minutes would be terrible. I didn't realize it took that long but there is more involved. Cutting away the molded plastic strain relief. Trimming back the insulation, which I almost screwed up on one wire. Making sure I got the shrink tube positioned and close as I could to insure that I didn't wind up with a short. All of that does take time. I've also noticed that when I am filming it takes longer than if I am not. Dealing with the shrink tube was a rather fiddly part of the job and probably took the most time. The fact that it took as long as it did doesn't mean it wasn't easy. It was just time consuming to do.

    I finally got a clue. The reason the current I measured for the tuner was not right for calculating the right resistor for the B+ is because it included the tube filament current. I needed to measure the current between the diode and the resistor. That would have given me a starting point that I could calculate the resistor size from. There is still the problem of the fact that the current won't be entirely correct because the wrong size resistor is in place. But, it would have given me a starting point that was much closer to what it should be.

    • @oldelectronicsfan5136
      @oldelectronicsfan5136 Před 4 měsíci

      Start by rotating the flywheel and get a sense of how freely it turns. I would then remove both belts from the motor and check how freely the motor and the flywheel turn. Testing with the belt on and off will give you an idea of how much the belt is adding to the resistance. Even a good belt will add some. I would lubricate the capstan shaft, from the front of the tape player, no matter what. I will be doing that for all tape players in the future. Check the pinch rubber roller. Make sure it turns freely and that it isn't too soft. If something has been used to clean it that damaged the rubber, it could be too soft. I would also lubricate that too. Be careful not to get oil on the roller. If that doesn't find anything. I would, with the drive belts still off, hit the play button and rotate both the fast forward/rewind pulley (where the small belt goes) and see how that behaves. Same with the capstan flywheel. If you find a lot of resistance in either of those, you will have to get further into the drive mechanism to find out what is causing the problem.

    I have built this kit myself as well. It has fair quality, not too hi-fi though. Designer has added a summation amplifier to mix left and right audio channels. Also, he has provided jumpers to by-pass one or more stages. No more than a meter of range on any of medium wave band frequencies. Keep the coil in the middle of ferrite to get max inductance. He has used 46 guage litz wire which is fair enough for small power. It generates around 50 to 100 milli-volts carrier which is amplified to about 2 - 3 volts and modulated after single audio mixing and amplification stage. BTW, same designer had released a newer version of it later. If anyone wishes to build it, i suggest he/she build the newwer one. Regards!

      If sending to a decent newer radio, you may reach about 6 feet. Older tube radios are far less. I use it primarily to test radios in frequencies that local noise prevents me from receiving. I also use it when doing youtube videos to avoid copyright strikes.

    I always thought as the "rock on a stick" ie the diamond styli is dragged over the grooves in a vinyl record as both are non-metal they produce static electricity fields or "static" and it is this that needs to be grounded?

    • @oldelectronicsfan5136
      @oldelectronicsfan5136 Před 6 měsíci

      No, the static is real and if it is really bad can cause noise but, grounding won't help that. The record sits on a rubber mat which insulates it from the platter, which is typically grounded. The real problem is that you have a noise source, the motor, and you have a low voltage signal that requires a great deal of amplification. Without proper grounding, the noise from the motor and hum that comes from other sources gets amplified to objectionable levels.

    Got that same machine, have used it for years. Gone through several belt changes. Cleaning the various sensors with alcohol. Removing the old lithium grease completely and replacing with a light coat of grease is critical. That bar the laser rides on needs a scrubbing and a light coat of silicone oil. My front switches have been endless trouble they need a cleaning yearly. I have to go over that Sony bout every 2 years. There are a capacitor or 2 around that player that failed on me, I replaced em was cheap small value caps. Mine would only record with one type of disc so stopped recording with it. Great player to load up and put on shuffle.

      I just picked up one of these for nothing. When you change belts, is there an alignment that the gears have to be in? Having weird issues. Works until I seal it all up.

      More specifically, the disc trays start to slow down, heading back to the laser, to a point that they cannot make it.

    I believe I had a SR 2010 back in the day. I think it was a 20Watts version, but that one had a wooden case as far as I can remember. And it had double VU meters.

      I think that wood sides were an option, that was true of other brands I know for sure. I am impressed with the sound quality of mine. I imagine yours was good as well.

    Personally, I prefer to restore a deck with few ICs, especially proprietary types - I quite like the idea of a discrete-only machine.

    • @oldelectronicsfan5136
      @oldelectronicsfan5136 Před 6 měsíci

      I also lean toward discrete. They are easier to repair. I was thinking that to get the ability to go from FF or Rewind straight to play, you would need IC's. Turns out I was wrong. The thing about the Sony is how complex it is. That would not be fun to repair.

    Your TC-650 look like a heavy machine; just checked it out at 21Kg!

  • @JamesE707

    Yes, my breaks went too on the Sony TC-645; this R2R only take 7" reels. I eventually replaced the pads with cut chamois leather bonded with double sided tape. It works a treat and is still working 12 months later. Overall the deck took quite some effort to bring it up to 99.9% - 100% of its original capacity. I did write a little about it on my blogger pages.

    I have the 'lesser' TC-645 which I restored from near-dead.

    Can one use the woofer as an independent item and add a signal from a source and plug a mint plug into the woofer? Thanks.

    • @oldelectronicsfan5136
      @oldelectronicsfan5136 Před 6 měsíci

      You can. I gave the circuit diagram for the DIN plug and that will give you the info you need. If you don't use satellite speakers, you may either want to wire in a volume control set to minimum or wire a high watt 8 ohm resistor across the outputs for those speakers. Not sure how well the satellite speaker amp ic's would tolerate being open circuit.

    I should mention that in some instances, this change will not work well. There is the possibility of ground loops that can actually cause hum. It is also possible that you will have less noise if you use a separate ground wire. I just read that the separate ground is there to provide what is called a sudo balanced connection, think XLR connection. However, with a more modern stereo that doesn't have a ground, this seems like a good option.

    Hello The stereo Indicator lamp has to be on not only in FM stereo but also in Phono and Aux, as long the mono button is not pushed in.(I have this Receiver at home)

    • @oldelectronicsfan5136
      @oldelectronicsfan5136 Před 7 měsíci

      You are correct. I also read that if you are playing a mono record then pressing that button can reduce rumble, noise and distortion. Thanks for pointing that out.
