  • I have learned a number of things that prompted me to take a second look at my Akai, and, I wasn't really happy with my first investigation into the noise problem. I also needed to correct some comments I made in the previous video. In the process of doing this, I discovered something that has been wrong with it since before I owned it. The discovery comes at the end of the video. I think you will find it very interesting. I was rather surprised.

I always thought as the "rock on a stick" ie the diamond styli is dragged over the grooves in a vinyl record as both are non-metal they produce static electricity fields or "static" and it is this that needs to be grounded?

No, the static is real and if it is really bad can cause noise but, grounding won't help that. The record sits on a rubber mat which insulates it from the platter, which is typically grounded. The real problem is that you have a noise source, the motor, and you have a low voltage signal that requires a great deal of amplification. Without proper grounding, the noise from the motor and hum that comes from other sources gets amplified to objectionable levels.
