    Nice find and a great video! I love finding mowers like this and bringing them back to life, it’s very satisfying. Amazing that it didn’t also have a bent shaft, half a tank full of water or an entire quart of oil in the crankcase, but at least it had the obligatory upside-down blade!

  • @MidwestOptimist
    @MidwestOptimist Před 12 hodinami

    I'm surprised you didn't bother with changing the crankshaft oil seal. You can clearly see it's leaking... When your engine only holds 5/8ths of a quart any oil leak is seious.

    I notice now that a lot of these "new" ohv mowers that everyone immediately flocked to to replace their old flatheads are now all junk after 2-4 years. It's designed to get everyone to go with electric powered bullshit. Personally I think the flatheads are just fine. Not getting rid of mine and looking for others. They work great and last 30yrs+.

  • @hairballmanor

    Nice video. I dumpster saved a mower like this about a month ago. Strange thing is that the blade on it was on upside down too, it looked like it was on like that for its entire life. The other strange things were that the control cable was on the opposite side, the bail was hung underneath the handle and the pull start was not fastened to the handle. Not sure what the previous owner was doing/thinking. It runs great.

    I bought a self- propelled version of this same model last week from Amazon. The first time that I used it it the belt guard (under the engine) broke off. The guard is made of light plastic rather than metal. I've been going back and worth with powersmart about returning it but no answer yet. Can I say anything positive about the mower? Yes. I like the candy red color.

    These were neat blowers. I’m surprised it’s 30 years old and it’s still working. Mcculloch airstream blowers are definitely the thing of the past nowadays. I have a super airstream 4 except it’s a blower vac. I’m surprised it’s still showing life too and good compression and spark and it still ran after all these years. Is that ethanol on 8:45?

    Hi, I've got the same mower. Went through and cleaned the carb. Replaced the two gaskets at the top and bottom of the bowl. Now leaking gas which seems to be coming out from the venturi area. Any idea what could be the issue? Thanks in advance.

    • @BackyardRepairs
      @BackyardRepairs Před 8 dny

      Hey, leaking from the Venturi sounds like the needle/float is stuck in the open position and letting the carb flood over. I’d prob take the carb back off to make sure debris isn’t keeping it open, but a quicker check would be to remove the bowl with the carb still installed and manually move the float up and down to make sure it’s stopping fuel flow when in the up position.

    For the Husqvarna HU700F, the recoil rope typically has a small clamp-on stop (similar to a split sinker) leaving about 30” of rope that does not recoil. The reason being, the rope attaches to the mower’s handle, allowing you to crank while the blade brake lever is engaged. I realize it’s difficult to show while the handle is not attached, but wanted to point out that your hard stop is missing.

    My mom bought one of these new in 2020. It ran fairly loud right from new. It had rwd self propel, but her boyfriend and I didnt like using it, so it sat for two years. I finally got it running again this season and during the first cut with it the thing chucked the self propel belt and wrapped it around the blade. I had a very difficult time finding a new belt for it so I could sell it. I finally found a craftsman belt that fit and used that. We listed it and sold it after a few weeks, which early in the season is forever. My mom paid around $170 for it new in 2020, I guess that kind of explains a lot. There was nothing positive about the experience.

      Hey there, It sounds like you might have an older model with the ball clutch/ratchet type recoil. There should be the main “star” shaped cup body that threads onto the crank, 6 ball bearings, and then a thin metal cap to hold the bearings in that is held in place by the flywheel screen screws. I’m trying to think of what the 2 screws look like from your description and am coming up blank. To find the diagrams you’ll need to find the Briggs engine model number which should be the first set of numbers stamped on the blower cover right above the spark plug. If all else fails, feel free to email me some pictures and I can try to help from there too backyardrepairs1@gmail.com

    Got 2 of these, 1 in each hand every fall. Live it the woods of PA, LOTS of leaves. Had to put a piston and ring in one, ring was seized to piston. Got me to 125psi cold. Now other one didn't want to start. Pulled plug and soaked piston with MMO. Got me to 115 psi cold and it runs!

    I watch videos like this at 1.5 times the normal speed playback. You can still understand what's going on, but it goes quicker and you don't lose much. Try it and see.

    Did an Ariens mower with a Kohler a little bit ago... Wasn't starting, but ran on sauce.. So I just threw the carb thru the Ultrasonic cleaner, and poof... The AutoChoke was a fricken pain on the XT6 on that Ariens... I had to completely disassemble the thing. Honestly, I should have made a video of it for my channel, but ah well.. Next one. after the cleaning, the mower is a beast! Sounds fantastic too, and really smooth.. Was overall a very simple fix.. The autochoke wasn't assembled correctly, so it wasn't working anyway, and the carb wouldn't let the mower run, I tried with fuel, the main jet was plugged bad.

      I wasn't aware you could that that autochoke apart, since it kinda looked riveted together. I guess I'll have to look closer next time!

    Sorry being late on this one, but great job on your initial educated guess fits! Where do you find the torque call-outs? CZcamsr's are always saying "I can get the torque settings later" or "F it" lol. Problem is I can only find blade torques in the manual and nothing in the engine manual. Some tuber's are even saying there's a torque call-out for every bolt and nut. What's your take? BTW, I just got this model (w/ electric start) from my local mower shop in their so called "bone yard" area for $25! Everything's there and it turns over (no oil though). Can't wait to dissect it as soon as I get done rebuilding a hrm215 I got for $4! 😃😃 I'm wondering if they were going to attempt to part it out but later figured, screw it...?

      Thanks! I can say via career experience that there is a max torque based on fastener capability, and then an assembly torque based on fastener application for pretty much any product out there. I've found that type of information is not available to people like us and is typically only available in the factory manufacturing/assembly process. So in most cases I can't find the mower-body assembly torques and will usually assemble it tightened "well" by hand, then try to find a torque for things I think are safety-critical after the fact. The engine-specific torques are typically in the engine shop manual that authorized dealers have and use, which has way more information than the basic use/care engine owner's manual they send with the mower. I think those who say they have the torque either invested in getting the right manufacturer documentation and looked it up, or are looking up the max torque via a general torque-tension chart using the fastener's size/type/grade. The risky part about the max torque route is those values do not take into account the application (i.e. steel bolt into plastic or aluminum threads requires lower torque than steel bolt into steel nut, etc) Great score on the $4 HRM215! What a random sale number lol

      @@BackyardRepairs yeah, I just realized “the shop manual” ($40). I see why these mechanics forgo it 😆. Thank you on your follow up! The hrm is running. Just needed emulsifier/pilot jet cleaned (bowl was pristine surprisingly) and oil added. Now learning linkage for proper RPM setting. Just got a tachometer also

      This one was a fix and flip project, so it was sold after I used it a few times to ensure no issues popped up. The equipment from my videos are primarily repairs on personal machines, repairs for neighbors, or fix and flips to sell. So after the video is done I don't typically have access to them again as it's either sold or returned to the owner.

      Appreciate it! The bar/chain combo I used was Oregon 27860 (12” bar, S48 chain). It was a new old stock eBay buy at the time of filming, so I’m not sure the exact one will be easy to find

    If you take a small steel wire you can run thru the whole in the tank and out the filler neck and you won't have to remove the tank. Nip a piece off the end of the line like from opposite tip down about 1/4in to otherside and push wire thru the line and pull back up or down thru the tank
