  • I take a look at this LawnBoy AWD 21" self propelled push mower with a Kohler XTX650 , get it ready for the spring, and diagnose a startup issue. I also touch on adjusting the self-propel so all wheels are working correctly.
carb cleaning, blade sharpening, scrape deck, adjust self-propel, diagnose auto choke

Did an Ariens mower with a Kohler a little bit ago... Wasn't starting, but ran on sauce.. So I just threw the carb thru the Ultrasonic cleaner, and poof...
The AutoChoke was a fricken pain on the XT6 on that Ariens... I had to completely disassemble the thing. Honestly, I should have made a video of it for my channel, but ah well.. Next one.
after the cleaning, the mower is a beast! Sounds fantastic too, and really smooth..
Was overall a very simple fix.. The autochoke wasn't assembled correctly, so it wasn't working anyway, and the carb wouldn't let the mower run, I tried with fuel, the main jet was plugged bad.

I wasn't aware you could that that autochoke apart, since it kinda looked riveted together. I guess I'll have to look closer next time!

My buddy had one of those. It may have not been that exact model, but it was a powered lawn boy. We were cutting grass for money when we were kids.
I had a cheap murray push mower. Mine burned up cutting someones yard. Lol

I've worked on a few of the older LawnBoys (the ones with the funky wheel layout) back before I did these videos and was always impressed with the build quality. Thanks for sharing!

I might be wrong but I think the lever on the auto choke needs to be on the right so it has tension. Take it off push it to the right and hook it back up and see if that's it

Thanks! I’ll have to experiment with this next time I see one of these

In my experience that engine always takes time to come up to speed. Cleaning the carburetor was the right fix!

I have always wanted a LawnBoy mower. Good call on the exhaust choke. I wonder if it was sprayed out and if that would help. That's what I would have tried. I haven't had one of those either.

After I flipped it over I didn't see any port that I could have cleaned out unless it was covered in carbon and I missed it. It looked like the hole in the top of the exhaust is meant to pulse hot air onto the underside of that auto choke, warm it up, and have the mechanism move the arm (my guess was a thermostatic bimetal strip/coil inside of it)

Clean the carburetor before you start the service on it! Something else will fall in and...😮😮😮

It says no oil change is required but the oil is black as night. What are they doing?

I don't believe that stuff and change the oil anyway, I feel it's just a marketing gimmick. However, there was a study done by Briggs awhile back stating something to the effect that the oil is burned at a certain rate and if you continually top it off it will stay within spec.

This was a common thing once upon a time. It was "CHECK AND ADD", that's it.
Briggs did that gimmick too, but at the same time, Briggs DID use "TEFLON OIL" and say that after using that oil, their engines can run without oil... Spoiler.. They couldn't
      Look up "SLICK 50" 😂😂

Briggs is still selling their new engines with the "no oil changes, check and add" marketing campaign. I once did a 45min break in on a new 2023 163cc mower with this labeled right on the air cleaner cover, and the oil came out grey with all the debris it pulled out.
