I am so sad to have to say that those replacement hub motors coming from China are still not here as yet, they are still in production, and I have had some news by email of production delays today, Hey Ho! .... Still, I can enjoy some fun and do a few more workshop videos.

I have to say I do highly rate Kymco scooters, so it was great to be able to borrow a Maxi XLS for a review. While I am waiting for the new motors for Wood-E coming from China I have managed to have the opportunity to test out and review a KYMCO MAXI SLX ....

After the tree stump crash over Cannock Chase, still waiting for bits for Wood-E's repair and trying to patient. So, as I do not own a branded scooter, I thought I could have some fun and enjoy doing the odd review of some popular makes of mobility scooters. Along with Jim, I have reviewed the Kymco Midi XLS which was very enjoyable, and this is the larger Kymco Maxi XLS.

With Wood-E in bits and under repair in the workshop, I thought it would be a good opportunity to try a scooter that starts in bits. A little class 2 mobility scooter, often called a boot scooter to get my old bones out and into the countryside. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.

As you may know poor Wood-E has suffered a bit of a bash, so out of action for a while as I have to await new motors. But the weather is so good, and staying indoors waiting for parts just does not cut it. In steps a hired class 2 - 4mph scooter. It would appear that the Nut on the handle bars is playing up again. Was having a great ride over Cannock Chase and was descending a fairly steep bank when one of Wood-E's rear motor wheels found a tree stump. So I now have 2 or 3 weeks in the workshop, and have decided to take the opportunity to redesign as well as rebuild the rear end. ..... He Ho!

Given your interest in Kymco mobility scooters you might want to try their premier offerings (both versions of the maxi are Kymco's mid-range scooters). A step up here is the Agility or, their flagship, the 'Maxer'. Size is the main different between these two models (the Maxer is a little wider). Both sport significantly higher specifications over the smaller models and, like all Kymco mobility scooters, are built to a very high standard. They still of course do the same thing as any scooter (essentially getting you from A to B) but are just that bit more plush and, typically, have all the bells and whistles missing on cheaper mobility scooters.

Lovely informative video Joe. Very sorry to hear about the delay on the motor production. I have 2 breeze s4 scooters one with a canopy and one without. Surprisingly the scooters only have 2 x 75amp lead acids but I can get about 28 miles on the scooters. That’s climbing to mountain roads as well. Would love to convert to lithium batteries to get some more range as there are some routes that are just out of reach. Hoping your motors are sent soon so I can see more videos of Woody on the trails.

Hear you on this, legislations and regulations are the bane of many a manufacturer. As to speed control you could look at the VR systems used for Megasquirt. Hall is better as you're thinking and optical is better still. I did once design a PWM motor controller chip but that was 30+ years ago and it is all gone... You might get away with a glued in neodymium magnet in one or more of the brake disc holes. You can get them is many sizes. A small Arduino like board would be able to count it and do the simple maths. With the DAC output you could then use that to limit the max voltage the BLDC controller 'sees' from the Arduino. Using the ADC side to read the twist throttle would give you a simple limiter. Program would be pretty simple. DAC functions seem a bit rare but most of the SBC maker type things can output PWM which with a relatively simple RC smoothing circuit would 'look' like a voltage for the 'throttle' input. Even the BBC micro:bit might do as it has built in magnetic sensor.

When my daughter was doing ICT at school and struggling with programming I used a Adadruit Trinket pro (5v) to make a Dr Who likes sonic screwdriver prototype. It flashed a range of LEDs and sqwaked depending upon the twiddling of a potentiometer. I think I spent a tenner. So should be able to do what you want.

Many thanks Gavin, the Arduino, is the way to go just as you described. Kind of wish you lived close by as I do not know enough at the moment and the learning curve is very steep. But as motors become vastly more powerful there is a need for a device that will read wheel speed , fit between the throttle and the controller as plug and play device. Regards Joe.

Your scooter is custom unique thing of beauty. I suppose with manufacturers of mobility scooters they are looking at the average use and laws in different countries. Max speed of 8 mph in the UK and most class 3 scooters can manage 30 miles on standard 75 amp batteries. Does the average disabled person need anymore ??

Mrs has the Midi-xls which is almost the same as the maxi. Main difference is the midi is a couple of inches narrower. I have the manual from Kymco dated 2012. So yes there is a lack of development and a look online seems to be road legal 8mph scooters all seem to be the same basic form. Innovation seems lacking. Only 2 on a major website I could see came with Lithium. As I've said on previous videos I'm in the process of upgrading Mrs one to 2x50ah lithium, a proper 'fuel' gauge (coulombmeter) and balancer.

Hi Joe, does it have a tiller lock. I'm now obsessed with Mobility Scooter security because no one else gives a monkey about it. 26,000 scooters were stolen in the UK last year and none of them had a stearing lock (Tiller Lock) I'm guessing. I't wouldn't have occurred to Pride to put another keyway on the opposite side of the tiller to lock it off before leaving it outside Tesco's. That was a better video than some of the videos you've done previously. Slower is better. Michael.

Hey Joe, I'm an Advanced Vehicle Control Trainer and off-road 4x4 Specialist Trainer, the discussion of drive and the issues is good. As per the use of quality aluminium frames it is simply the cost to manufacture and the requirements from us consumers. You (& I) are weird as most people do not think like this. I have several neighbours who use mobility aids. I helped one neighbour with their choices as he was being 'steered' towards an unsuitable aid by sales people that were really rather expensive. I'm also an ex-electronics engineer. The 'disabled' tax is pretty big. [To be fair, mobility sellers have costs and a wide range of stock that they may have for many months.] Thinking back to early Mountain Bikes, only the very expensive, hand built ones were made from lighter/stronger metals. Now, the volume and expectations mean mid range bikes are hydroformed aluminium extrusion out of aircraft grade (6061 or even 7075). Some even are carbon fibre. The normal mobility user has no knowledge or frankly care about this stuff. Take one neighbour as an example. He was amazed when I put a 2nd hand Autochair scooter lift in the back of our old VW Touran. He thought it had to be fitted by the manufacturer or some specialist company (at specialist rates). You seem handy and know people who can TIG up your Al frame for you. For us, it seems obvious and we are the types who will push for a better product. Are you aware of JerryRigEverything CZcams channel. He got so fed up with lack of decent off-road capable mobility kit for his wife he built one from 2 cheap electric bikes. He now makes the 'Not-a-Wheelchair' at pretty much cost of $2500. So, similar to your idea of in wheel motors. Mobility scooter design is stuck with the motor/transaxle and standard controller but hopefully more will use in wheel motor designs as they get cheaper. Like Lithium batteries - why on earth are we still selling Lead Acid powered scooters? LiFePO4 is so superior but needs different charging and extra electronics. I'm just doing this for the Mrs' Kymco. 2 50ah LiFePO4 cost the same as SLA traction batteries, similar size but 20kg saved. Ok so a different charger, a balancer and coulombmeter (for fuel gauge) mean another £100. But these are all simple circuits that could be built into the main ECU/control electronics. So our 2nd hand Kymco midi-xls with new lithium system will have cost £800. New cost on one is £2500 and still has lead acid. Mrs power wheelchair has lithium batteries, alu main frame. Original cost £4000. Sorry, long post on phone so bad grammar, spelling and punctuation expectations...

Does it have a tiller lock Joe? It really annoys me to think I paid over £4,000 for my Pride Colt Executive and Pride doesn't give a shit about security. I worry when I go to Tescos, if the scooters still going to be there when I come back to it. I bought a motorcycle clutch lock which fits over the right forward paddle and the handlebars and locks with a push-in tubular lock. I've also got a 2mtr motorcycle security chain and padlock going through those to securing rings on the bottom of the tiller. Its a bit over the top, but its definately a deterent to anybody thinking "That scooter would look nice sitting in my driveway". Nice little run out on different model to what your used to. Your a braver man than me Joe. I prefer my scooters in one piece, not strewn across the workshop like yours. There again, Pride warned me several times not to make security modifications to my Colt as it would void the warranty. I told them I wouldn't need to if they designed the damn thing so dickheads wouldn't keep trying to knick it from outside Tescos when I go shopping. As it happens I have made a few security improvements. I've added a motorcycle security chain to the front through those 2 securing lugs at the bottom of the tiller so it's tethered to a steel pole where they keep the shopping trolleys. That will deter the thieving buggers. The chain is secured via a D Ring Shackle so I still have the warranty in place. btw, I've got a pair of button braces similar to yours. Nice video by the way. Michael.
