This Ludwig Vistalite Snare Drum Shouldn't Exist, But It Does!
Ludwig never cataloged a 6-lug vistalite snare drum, but I found one, and I'm shocked by what a great drum it is (I dig it more than I have any vintage vistalite snare I have owned!). Come check it out and learn a little lesser known Ludwig vistalite history in the process!
It's the most fun you'll have all week!

What Makes Cheap Drums Cheap (And Good Drums Good)??
zhlédnutí 8KPřed 5 měsíci
What, really, is the difference between cheap drums and good drums? How significant are the differences and how do they affect the behavior of the drum? And what can be done to improve the quality of truly cheap drums? No, I don't recommend buying uber cheap drums and then trying to fix them up (big hassle and probably as much expense as just buying a better drum to begin with), but for the sak...

There is another drum that is (or was) constructed like that - the Slingerland Festival. It was steel and chromed, rolled and welded and riveted. The bearing edge on the Festival was folded over, so double in thickness. The INDe drums are very cool.

I wonder if that's an accident that I was 999th who liked your AMAZING video? 😁 Anyway, I can support this whole thought of tuning higher than usual, mainly big(ger) toms and floors ( the smaller too actually ). I have an experience from a big stage where I got to sit behind Eric Singer's kit in 2022 when KISS were here in Budapest ( Hungary ). I checked his entire ( very large ) kit and was SHOCKET by how high EVERYTHING sounded and was actually tuned. Toms + floors were 6",8",10",12",13",14",15",16" and 18". ( 6"-10" and 14" and 15" were concert toms ). I spoke to him next day and told him how surprised I was and his reply was:" yeah, and I want them tuned even higher" 😄 The interesting part is, they did NOT sound any higher in the PA.. My thought of this is he had them tuned so high so that all the lower ones still produce some audible tonality plus it makes the smaller ones stand out even if still not sounding as if from different kit. Now even the 12" and 13" rack toms still sounded pretty 'rock natural' = no unnaturally high pitch spotter. I know this doesn't have anything to do with your micking idea, but I still hope this experience helps to support it.

HELLO JOEL! Superb video, excellent picture quality and sound! Wonderful comparison of the two! I bought my first Ludwig Supraphonic 400 brand new in 1971 from Manny's Music in Manhattan! I still have it and believe it or not I am still using the original snares with the patent number on it! I only had to replace the top rim and the muffler in all those years! REMO Vintage X batter, REMO reso! As far as the low medium and high tuning I really loved the tone of the low tuning however my wrists prefer to play on a highly tuned skin, it just gives me an easier time doing my doubles, paradiddles, quick rolls etc!

I find you get more usable frequencies out of the 14" depth bass drum compared to the 18" depth. I had my 18" star classic birch cut to 14.5" ( extra .5 just to be slightly different which I decided to do on the way down to a drum shop). When I got it back and played it, it was very commanding and more punchy right off the bat............ no regrets having it done!

So I bought a set purely to learn how to tune them and this video is very down my alley. instead of "Do this or that" you actually just show how different things manipulate the sound of a snare and what adjustments to make to get a sound. extremely helpful for learning what to listen for in a snare.

So if shell is not vibrating, the energy from the head is not dissipated. Material of the shell only affects the sound in term of density and mass -> thin metal drum and thick wood having same mass produce same sound. Whether it is welded metal shell, spun or cast; solid wood, or plies, or block does not matter?
