Sh!t: We bought a farm
United Kingdom
Registrace 1. 03. 2024
We're Jess & Dan and we've jumped into the absolute abyss of home renovation. It really was a case of Shit, we bought a farm... now what!? The farm we ended up buying is an old dairy-turned-beef cattle farm in Scotland. It's seen much better days. Because there is no chance of a mortgage at present, we have a special deal with the seller in which we have exactly 2 years from the date of entry to get the property under finance, or we lose the whole lot and end up bankrupt.
The stakes couldn't be higher, but we have a plan, a small pot of funding and a vision for where our dream home will end up. The question is, can we do it?
The other question is "why is it a 'sht farm' on socials?" Honestly, because the entire channel title doesn’t fit, if we thought she was actually shit, we wouldn’t be here!

Lounge Reno & Reveal Part 1 🥳
Here's Part 1 of 2 of the Lounge Reno (technically probably part 2 of 4?!) with the second instalment due next week. 1.5 hours is a bit too long for CZcams and this was a LOT of emotions in one mixing pot...
After the wobbliest couple of weeks for both Dan and I, we tried to crack on with the cottage lounge but hit snag after snag. Thankfully, we’ve picked up lots of little learnings that we can use to move faster in other areas all over the site, and we’re excited to show all the lovely kind folk our lounge/office finished next week 🥳
Remember, we're actual people who are juggling this project around our lives and work too, and although everyone has differing opinions, we're all trying to muddle through.
(P.S don't worry, we'll reuse all reusable materials elsewhere)

Mini Mega Projects & Future Planning
zhlédnutí 18KPřed dnem
This week's update vlog takes us outside to start taming the site and involves some big compromises over character vs safety, access to finance and insurance. The cottage garden gets a manicure at floor level (to make picking dog poop up easier, of course) as we wait for the ride-on mower and compact tractor to arrive, and we head up to the field for the first time to discuss what the potential...
Quick Cottage Recap + where we've been
zhlédnutí 17KPřed 14 dny
WEEKS have gone by and you've been patiently waiting for an update, the short version of why we've been silent is in here, and this video brings us up to date to the point at which Jess flew off to the other side of the world 3 weeks ago. With no power in the main farmhouse to commence major works there, and with her still needing to dry a bit, the attention turns to the cottage to finish the L...
Farm Update: Storm Kathleen, "Tractors" & Potholes
zhlédnutí 22KPřed měsícem
We haven't touched on the external areas of the farm for quite a while, so we thought we'd just pop together some bits from the past couple of weeks for those who want to see everything! April & May have been and will be very, very busy for us and our businesses, so as Jess takes off across to the other side of the world for work, Dan will be left solo to crack on here at home. With this in min...
Tough roof repairs, but look at the progress 🤯
zhlédnutí 20KPřed měsícem
Just a little update on where the roof is up to on the main farmhouse, things we've found and addressed and finally, Jeremy is laid to rest (🤢). As we mention here, David & his team have been the best people we could have found for this job. Repair and replace is the method we chose, and repair and replace they do! It's tough when uncovering bits means that days are added to the schedule of wor...
Farmhouse Progress... Is there a fireplace?
zhlédnutí 23KPřed měsícem
A bit of a deeper dive into the strip-out of a couple of core sections of the Main Farmhouse that Dan wanted to share, plus Jess's strong need to know everything got the better of her where the "library" fireplace was concerned. Check back in a few weeks for the full stripping of this room 🤓 We've gone slightly back in time to share these little bits, but we'll bring you up to speed elsewhere n...
Spaniard meets Scotland... Tuna's first few days 🐴
zhlédnutí 17KPřed měsícem
Finally, the time has come for Tuna to move up to Scotland. The biggest culture shock an animal could possibly have, the first week was eventful to say the least. She's transitioning through 6 weeks of just being turned away from stabled competition-yard horse to herd hill pony, which involves a bit of nail-biting on our side and a lot of great people! HUGE thank yous need to go to: 1️⃣ Gillies...
HELP. Insulating a Solid Stone Farmhouse... We need your opinion ASAP
zhlédnutí 28KPřed 2 měsíci
We have a pot of 3 options (below) for insulating the gigantic old farmhouse, but we're struggling to get reliable advice on which way to go. There is absolutely no consensus online or offline, so not screwing up this part is a bit harder. Solid walls are always tricky to insulate for reduced energy consumption, and with the scale of this huge property, the decision-making is even tougher. The ...
THREE Drain Problems... ⚠️ Expletives Inside
zhlédnutí 25KPřed 2 měsíci
Just a little one for those who want to see EVERYTHING though it might actually be the most sweary one yet thanks to 1 drain clearing situation, but alas this was a fun set of tasks that urgently needed completing. We start by trying to find the actual real drain for "the flood", then move to sink/washing machine outlets and, finally, clearing the poop chute at the cottage. You also get a windo...
Where we're up to on the Scottish Farm 🏴
zhlédnutí 30KPřed 2 měsíci
Operation Desert continues, but we thought we'd add an extra video this week for those who want to see more covering where we're at, the current drying-out progress, the other bits that happened in the background and more on the farm buildings. It was SUPER windy outside today and although we protected the microphones well (for once) we haven't quite learnt that we don't need to be heard by the...
The Farmhouse is Watertight (ish) 🥳
zhlédnutí 31KPřed 2 měsíci
This one will no doubt be controversial, but from Dave's Roof Autopsy (see below) and our prep work last autumn, we had a plan to commence with this ASAP focussing only on the north-side emergency section first. The fact we weren't there for half of it made documenting it tricky, but hopefully we've just about done it in this video with some sketchy narration and fun in the process. The ugly du...
Stripping the Farmhouse + a mini Q&A
zhlédnutí 30KPřed 2 měsíci
Whilst Jess panics at the number of eyeballs watching these videos now, and realises that she might need to cut the clips differently to suit those who don't know us, I start getting all the wet out of the main farmhouse because we're committed to trying to repair instead of rebuild. Jess covers lots of questions in the mixture of timelapse mini demolition moments to hopefully add more context ...
The Roof Autopsy: How bad really is it?
zhlédnutí 33KPřed 2 měsíci
We knew it was bad, but really HOW bad was still unknown, and Operation Desert relies on a good roof. With Dave the roofer on site, we got him to assess the flat roof, valleys, dormers and gutters to give us a solid verdict. He had come to put an emergency cover on the broken point, but after seeing it all up close, we switched to a different plan. Autopsy over, was there more good than bad? 🚨 ...
Week 1 at the Scottish Farm 🏴
zhlédnutí 47KPřed 2 měsíci
Week one was an exploration week after we bought a farm in Scotland. We hadn't been to the property in over 6 months and there were a LOT of unanswered questions as it has been vacant for so long. The seller didn't live there, so many questions about where important stuff was couldn't be answered. Lots of DIY bits completed to just get going and then we commenced with Operation Desert. 🚨 Subscr...
The good, the bad, & the broken... Disaster home tour Part II 🫣
zhlédnutí 48KPřed 2 měsíci
We just bought a farm in Scotland and in Part II of our intro tour to our humble "sht farm", we'll delve into the outbuildings, sheds and stores that make up the main bulk of the steading. Old, new and mixed bits, but oodles of potential, it's time to take you through what we never saw when we first viewed the property. Yep, you read that right - we'd not been into any of the buildings (except ...

We’ve always peeled tape when the paint is still a bit wet! Looking amazing!! I did really like the darker floor but understand why you changed it!
Dan, get yourself a decent extension pole for your roller, much quicker and a lot less tiring to do. (Advice from a painter and decorator)
I fear that I would make more mess 😂
@@sht-farm if only I lived closer I’d give you a 10 min lesson.
Great vid Dan and Jess, no ones perfect doing remodels and anything really. You’re doing great and having fun mostly. You guys are a great team!
Glad you are enjoying the videos and thank you for the kinds words 🙏🏼
Well done great work 👍
Thank you 🙏🏼
THIS SH1T IS PRETTY DOPE
Thank you 🙏🏼
Poor Dan 🤯🤯🤯
To be honest, it was the right decision and Jess did help a LOT with the laminate 😊
is there a slurry pit on the farm
Under the slatted cow shed yes 👍
there is plenty of ''perfect'' fake videos, thank you for showing real life issues and solutions ;)
Glad you are enjoying all the issues and mishaps that we are having 😂
@@sht-farm well, when you put it that way 🫢 🫣 let's hope there is no mishaps, but hey, you do own a farm.... Sooooo... 🤣
mr muscle oven cleaner is the best thing to use on the stove glass
Good to know, I will look into using this in the future 🤓
I ordered a whole houseful of matching Venetian blinds, 23 blinds in varying sizes based on the way the color sample looked the the catalog. When they arrived the color clashed with the wooden floor. Luckily they allowed us to simply replace them with the better choice, made after taking actual samples honestly to compare it took another 12 weeks, but they didn’t charge us any fees or penalties. Thank goodness.
I’m so glad it’s not just me 🫣🙏
Absolutely love your videos, you guy's are great together, same banter as me and my wife (I randomly sing about my tools as well 😂) keep doing what you're doing, ignore the idiots and just remember they've watched your video so it's increased your views and made you a little cash 😉
Glad you are enjoying these videos and the banter within 😊 I mean I use the word singing very loosely when describing my antics 🙈
Great video's - really enjoying what you are both doing.
thank you 🙏🏼
Easiest way to clean the glass on a wood burner, mix ash and water into a paste, this forms an abrasive cutting paste and will scrub the glass clean without the need for chemicals or wire wool
Oooo now this is interesting, I will be giving this a try next time for sure 😊
Quick tip for the floor when you get to the door frames use a multi tool to under cut the frame height of the laminate then slide it under
Thank you, will be sure to give this a try in the future 🤓
I love you guys! Keep doing YOU! and we all know what I would say to the haters
😂😂😂😂😂😂
To clean the glass on the log burner just use some water and the ash from the fire. dip a cloth in the water and then the ash and clean the glass. it will come up spotless.
11m17seconds Dan's default response for an easy life...been there pal😂
Dan, quick one, when notching door jams for flooring to fit under, lay a board early against it and sit the multi tool on top of the board to make it nice and straight
You guys a doing a great job. I can see your buying good quality tools and materials. That is absolutely the right thing to do. It’s a false economy cheaping out. Well done
I honestly dont understand how people can hate on this. Guys you have a massive supporting please dont let idiots ruin your journey for us and especialy you. How you found the energy to re do that room is beyond me im so lazy i would of just kept it fair play to you for redoing it id love to be able to have that much enthusiasm keep it up brill video
as said already the ash damp kitchen roll works . if ur good stove is running well shouldnt be too much soot on glass tbh ..
Can you use a sharp blade to gently score along the paint edge to cut through the paint skin before removing masking tape?
Oh dear! Poor you, you looked so Stressed and poor Dan all his hard work and to do it again with difficult timber, no wonder he wasn't at his best. I hope you can return with wonky planks. Did you buy enough for all the downstairs rooms? You'll not be looking forward to doing that again. Sorry to hear you've been getting bad comments. It's so un-necessary. If people don't like what you do, there's a very easy remedy.... don't watch!.
Love the videos, along with your openness and honesty & have never understood why people feel the need to send hateful messages. Like everyone else says, just ignore them!!...Keep it up guys loving your content and thank you 😃
Aww Jess, if it was just for one room it wouldn’t be that much of an issue, but as it is going to be in multiple rooms you would never be happy if you’d left the floor. Dan did a great job fitting it though. I hope you’re feeling better xx
Having laid laminate for the first time recently, I hate the stuff. And I sympathise with some of the issues you had
The only "hate comment" you deserve... Don't go away again unless you're prepared to edit remotely as the gap left a big hole in my entertainment..
Just magic viewing !
I am just loving the entire series! Dan just gets down to business and wow, what a nice job on that room and of course the effect on the Chimney! Really nice. Ignore any negative comments, I love your commentary and the banter back and forth between you two…LOL! You are clearly busy as heck working around work and life and this huge project as well! Oh, just a note, but I also really enjoy the length of the episode.
Great content once more. Have to say anyone who feels the need to send you unpleasant messages really needs to bugger off and stop watching your channel, just no need for it. Keep up the good work 😉
We had a similar situation but was down to paint colour. We decided to paint all of the woodwork a dark ash Grey when we first moved in. Needless to say, we completed all of the woodwork, skirting, door surrounds, panelling etc, stood back and then realised it was a massive mistake! It happens but it's about putting it down to learning!
Personally my wife and I, preferred ur first choice in flooring. That darker colour was rich and warm. Went lovely with the green. As for haters, i can't believe u even have to deal with them!
Don't listen to the haters..... consider an 18v sds too
love your clearview stove can also use the wd40 on glass. love the progress you guys are making keep up the fab work😃
You can get doors 🚪 stripped for about 50£ back to wood 🪵
Recommend.... paint scuttle, paint kettle & a roller pole save your back & neck 👍🏼
Cheap way of cleaning stove glass - newspaper and vinegar.Great results. Really enjoy watching your progress and interaction between you both.
Knee pads young man. I get that your fit/strong/young but trust me, protect the knees. 😮
Love watching your progress...wishing you all the best
❤
yep,is really difficult and hard to paint some walls ......
Here’s a tip that will change your life, use oven foaming cleaner on the inside glass of the wood burner. Cleaning takes minutes. To stop it building up, always make sure the wood burner runs super hot.
Clean glass on firebox use fire ash and damp cloth. no products needed.
Loving your videos. Thank you so much for sharing this process, it's so enjoable to watch. The odd mishap or changing your mind is completely normal. It's a massive undertaking and so many decisions to make, while also running your business. Please put any unsavoury comments/DMs straight in the bin. I have a channel too, so feel you on this. It's a them problem, not a you problem. You are both doing a wonderful job ✨
Dan is the Man!!! Love your channel. Beautiful job on this room. 🥰🥰 I can't DIY for sh!t either. I just do my best.
I know Dan is right about a man always needing more tools. My husband still feels that way (at 84 yo). Hope you don't get hate mail, there is no need for that. You will be living there, so your choices. Floor is looking great so far. Best wishes.
So you changed a decision you made when you were tired and confused when you were tired and confused again? Just an observation.Been there myself.
I would of done what Dan did with the board when you where bent over to hard to resist lol
I just love that Mallard Green - beautiful choice - Dan the peeling of the paint when the tape come off depends on the tape type - here in NZ it is the colour you choose depends on how hard it stick down depending on the work you do (depends on whether the paint peels off or not) - talk to the person in the paint shop about tape in the UK and what each do
