Spaniard meets Scotland... Tuna's first few days 🐴

  • Finally, the time has come for Tuna to move up to Scotland. The biggest culture shock an animal could possibly have, the first week was eventful to say the least. She's transitioning through 6 weeks of just being turned away from stabled competition-yard horse to herd hill pony, which involves a bit of nail-biting on our side and a lot of great people!
HUGE thank yous need to go to:
1️⃣ Gillies Transport, for the amazing communication, organisation and care provided to horses in transit. Tuna arrived calm, cool and happy after a careful drive up and over. I can't thank them enough - thank you also for everyone's recommendations here - www.ericgillie.co.uk/
2️⃣ Hetty, Lara, Russ & family for ensuring she was prepped and cared for perfectly in the month before she travelled. I wouldn't have trusted her with anyone else.
3️⃣ Isla, Rose & family for making our yard move seamless, ensuring everyone settled in fine and advising on all the people and businesses we needed to get set up here.
4️⃣ Mike, for being a text away every time Tuna threw a shoe or shredded a hoof. For super kind farriery and offering advice and management in her new hill pony life. (I can confirm that after 1 week barefoot and turned away, she's sound on the soft and very happy 🥳) - / mike.robertsfarrier
Lots of DMs asking about her, why she's not coming straight to the farm and why she's called Tuna too. Fortuna is her proper name but Tuna just stuck, and although she won't be a major part of vlogs moving forwards, her move up here is a big deal for both Dan and I. Eventually, when she can call the farm her home, we'll be complete as a family.
She's come from a busy competition yard and the change from there to the farm would be so extreme and sudden, she just wouldn't cope. The farm isn't horse-safe for fencing or stabling and we need to focus on the mortgage mission first and foremost, so this is the right thing for us as a family. There's also the major fact that she needs to learn to live out (nope from her) on the hills here in this climate (she hates the wet), with the terrain being very different to what she's used to, so with herd turnout with calm friends, but also great facilities and support on site, this fantastic yard was the obvious choice. And 2 weeks in she's settled perfectly and adores her new digs. Result!
Normal farm shenanigans moving forwards, but I hope for those who were interested, this covers Tuna 🤓

Just a bit of encouragement from a horse loving hoof trimmer/farmer/vet from a very wet part of Australia: CONGRATULATIONS for letting Tuna out of the cotton wool to be a horse. Good luck with the next phase of the hoofcare journey, I understand your trepidation. Make sure you have specialised 'barefoot' advice, I know there's plenty in the UK.
Totally addicted to your channel, LOVE all the amazing farm buildings and your vision. Would love to see more dog stuff, how you're incorporating training in your new situation. Keep up the fantastic work and thanks for sharing it with the world❤

Tuna will love her new space and friends 😍 Living on hills and different terrain is so good for them, you will probably notice her balance and sure-footedness improve when she’s ridden too. Really enjoying the channel 😊

She is gorgeous. Looks like a great yard - fab to see them out in a herd on a large area. I agree with the fresh bed making 😀. Hope her feet adjust soon (there are lots of great sources of advice on going barefoot - supplements etc).

There is nothing better than a new bed of shavings. I could smell them from just watching. I’m glad Tuna arrived safely. It’s going to be fun with the shoe situation for you. I hope her feet aren’t too sore. It will be great for you, when you are ready to have her at home. I know it’s messy, but I also lovey he smell of hoof oil. Thanks for sharing xx

Omg, city girl in the wilderness! For the first time ever! I wish you the best of luck with her feet, I think you will need it. :D Looks like your crazy sassy mare doesn't understand that she needs those shoes and boots to run around like a lunatic pain-free. And I doubt anyone will be able to explain it to her. But maybe she will get used to everything over time, I've seen that before. :)

I hate to be that person… (and trust me a few months ago I know how this reads) but trust me… do some research etc but seriously look into going barefoot. It’ll take some transition time but shoes just mask problems and barefoot helps the natural mechanisms of the hoof flex, breathe and circulate. Tuna’s soles will continue to get softer and softer with pads on them. When they pull shoes they also damage their feet and concuss them. I have a ISH that had pedal bone fractures in both fronts, pedal osteitis, on and off lame after a year of rehab and a serial shoe puller… we haven’t looked back once since going barefoot!
Seriously… don’t just take my word for it, have a look into it!

    • @sht-farm
      @sht-farm  Před měsícem

It's not her soles really, it's more her HPA and balance with odd front feet. She's the first horse I've ever had shod remedially and it's been a 2 year battle, so stripping it all off is a bit terrifying, but she'll have no hoofies left at this rate, so we have to try!
