Practiced stopping and my buddy gets Coleman slide in the light rain | @ROCKETLongboards
Hi. Primary session for my buddy and Hector was with intention to practice pre-carve and stop. We made a very short 1-2 carve area and was working well even though we were mostly failing.
We kept having fun and just enjoying the process when Hector found his natural position for the (goofy foot) Coleman slide no rail. Stoked for him and congrats!

      Thank you. Yes, my friend, Hector learned Coleman in one session and wetness definitely helped. He did better applying areas I fell short on better: 1) press front foot, 2) lead with your front truck, 3) weight on front foot and wait for timing (don’t force the board), 4) traction will break.

    great stuff dude - my best advice that helped for me is to practice slides in the wet! you can do everything way slower and slide for way longer. it really really helps you get the feel for the position and how much you actually have to brace to hold a slide - and then more importantly standing up out of it.

    Brother, notice when you get your good slides...the board is carving smoothly and rear slightly starting to drift slightly(your weight more on the front truck making the rear light) before your puck lightly touches down sliding across the top of the pavement...your slide hand stays in line or forward of the front truck? You are rotating ON and WITH the board. *Then your crashes, your puck slams down first because your weight is dropping on your hand..increasing friction and your hand slides slower...drifting behind your front truck...which makes you pivot around your hand...and your weight shifts to the rear truck, causing a crash. You are rotating at a seperate speed than the board. As we are older , warm up off the board is a must. Stretches that open the hips, long pause low squats, toe touches all held for 3-5min...then access shoulder mobility and spinal rotation the same. You know what Im saying at our age...some days just certain muscles are just so tight a squat takes a while to release into. One the hips release, slides dramatically improve. ❤ Get it homie !

      Awesome info and quality comment-thank you. Yes, agree on warming up as we age and it was a reminder that warming is first then training. Makes perfect sense of the weight shifting and hand dropping first. Still takes so much conscious effort to focus, but building muscle memory/instinct takes hundreds if not thousands of specific skill training. Still stoked and thank for encouragement. 🤘

    Start low stay low with the carves try touching the pave or your 🛹 with your hand as you change direction carving. rocking on your arches, hill to toe can build up the muscle memory. Best to use shoes that you can feel the board and grip tape trough the sole if there is to much cushion I can't really get a full contact feel that helps use any features the concave might have.

    Those carves look very natural now. Still gotta try to keep your weight more on the front of the deck for those Colemans. Keep your planted hand closer and more inline with the front truck, and fold that rear knee down (to almost touch the deck), so your rear foot only makes contact to the board with only the medial side of the shoe. A larger stance helps to fold the rear knee down easier.

    Those "tracks" are officially called "thane lines", and they happen when certain wheels are slid. Morgans, Butterballs, Seismic's clear wheels, Banana Shakes, and Blank Skate Co's wheels are some wheels that thane easily. If you skate in a hot enough pavement that is abrasive enough, any wheel will thane. I was able to get my Snakes to thane on one hot Summer day. Snakes usually do not thane at all because they are so durable. Which is also another characteristic of "dumpy" wheels (wheels that thane a lot), is that they wear down quicker than other wheels.

    bettter way to stop here. learn this stationary. 1. put your back hand, either above or b elow your toe, as long as its on the front half of the board. 2. lean back and feel the tension between your shoulder.wrist/elbow while leaning back. 3. now when you feel that tension. lean back to your butt. get comfy sort of, rolling backwards doing thta. 4. put your front hand behind you. then slowly extend your b ack leg it should swing out infront of you a bit. when you add forward momentum to this, you will slide. do it with a little speed, you wont slide till you are going 15ish mph. it doesnt work going slow, you just roll over. you can practice without a hill. as your fastest flat ground speed. is about what you need to slide on a longboard. just keep doing it till you feel comfortable. eventually, youll be able to do this down a hill. i can stop in about 8 feet going 20mph in a skate park. which, is smoother and typically slide a lot further on skatepark ground. it has no friction. so doing in on black top, youll slide a bit. really helpful, but thie slide you are doing has its purpose. just not a straight road.

    the trick to stopping is keeping your center of balance bunched up. if you are widem you are stopping slow. and this type of slide, drifts, so you arent stopping, you are moving sideways.... slamming into that curb sorta proved it. you need to stop in a straight line. this is good for huge hills, banked turns like canyons runs where you are going 50, and need to turn or fly off a cliff.

    I'd highly suggest trying to transition to learning a more proper toeside slide than a pushup. Pushup slides are very easy to kick out, but completely rob you of control and visibility because you're surrendering all your weight from the board while looking uphill, ideally you want as much weight over your wheels as possible so they slow you down more quickly. Pushups can create bad habits over time and aren't very effective for stopping in an emergency.

    You need to learn to be able to carve at speed. Not only will it allow you the ability to prep for slides properly, but being able to carve allows you to have the peace of mind that you can actually carve away from danger without needing to shut down slide everytime you sense some source of danger. For example, if you are comfortable carving at speed, you definitely could have swerved to the right and accelerated past the merging car - possibly side-by-side, but you can definitely do it. The only way you're gonna be able to do that is to learn to carve big and small at speeds you're comfortable with and keep increasing your comfortable speed for carving big and small until you're comfortable at any speed.

I’ve been using the Carver board & trucks to help me get fear of loose trucks less, body movements, balance and did some large carving last night on my new Comet board with non-symmetrical set-up. Agree, I could have swerved and with more practice-it can happen.

      @@cantskate5535 That Comet setup is a beast. Stable AND turney. You can carve down this same hill in this vid and count the number of carves you did to get to the bottom. Then, each time you want to go faster try to reduce the number of carves by like 10% each successive round of carving. For example, if you carve down the first time with 40 carves, the second time, you should aim for no more than 36 carves, and keep decreasing it until you can only carve in the single digits.

    When you go uphill, most of your weight automatically becomes distributed to the front wheels, which deweights the rear wheels, thus making them break traction easier. To utilize this method to break traction on flat or while going downhill, just distribute weight to the front wheels intentionally (because it isn't automatic like for going uphill).

    Great progress. IMO it's all about being able to balance on your front foot on the board. That unlocks effortless pushing and easy footbraking. You're gonna shred those Nikes footbraking, but that's life. Shoes with dampening are usually not favored riding DH. Board feel and maximum control is usually valued over comfort. My feet are bad so I use custom molded orthotic soles in my skate shoes. Maybe something to look into if you ever feel like the Nikes don't give you enough control.

    Footbraking is an extremely important, fundamental, technique. It will save your bacon, more than once. However, it is easy to get the form wrong, especially in an emergency stop. For older skaters, like myself, footbraking has led to the most persistent soreness in my knees and ankles. My biggest tip is to tighten your core when footbraking; it helps you to more precisely control your weight distribution.

      @cantskate5535 Před 13 dny

      Thank you for that core tightening and weight distribution- makes sense. I honestly have minimal confidence in foot braking-more like a drag - for now. Emergency stops - working on it - but feel comfy with sloppy push up slide.

  • @gavinstrelitz1558
    @gavinstrelitz1558 Před 14 dny

    A couple of points. Get a foot brake sole otherwise you are going to shred your new shoes. It’s basically a piece of rubber you glue to the sole of your shoe. When you footbrake place your foot down heel first. The friction will then bring the rest of your foot down but you will have control. Also, try and keep contact between the board and your foot brake foot, around the ankle height. Lastly place your foot brake foot down closer to the front wheels. Again friction will move it back but you’ll have more control
