EVERYTHING You Need To Know About Oxalic Acid + HOW To Use It / Beekeeping 101 #beekeeping
We are getting to close to the time of year when varroa becomes an important thought on our minds... vaporizing a bee hive with oxalic acid is one of my favorite treatments to use to treat for varroa mites because it is the least harsh on the bees and doesn't have a whole lot of side effects like some of the other treatments have. So I hope this video helps in your search for your varroa mite management practice!

What was your mite count Before treating? Most are using 4 grams per deep No more than 5 days apart for 21 days Or in late late fall 2 applications while there are near broodless Also We make strips out of cardboard and soak them in a vegetable glycerin and oxalic acid mixture leave on for 40+days

  • @glennsnaturalhoney4571

I believe Jennifer Berrys recent research says that to be effective you need to oav every 2 to 3 days when there is capped brood. Dribble is only done once in winter when broodless. More effective than oav but challenging to do in some environments.

A little advise. I believe your mask is too large, make sure your cartridges are not out of date. And you can check your seal by holding your hands over the cartridge while trying to breath in. Good luck!

Last year (1st year) i only had 2 hives. I had one hive get over run with mites and the other the queen disappeared just after harvist time. I ended up saving my queen from the mite infestation and tossed her into my queenless hive, and thats when I discovered "brood breaks". That hive was super strong in the spring to the point where I did 3 splits and in reality could have done a couple more. With this being my second year and now have 9 hives from catching swarms and doing splits, I'm wondering if its at all possible to pull my queen's and safely save them to the side while doing a brood breaks? Or do I have to requeen? I really like most of my queens performances and dont want to risk getting bad ones. I know if i wait too long to hatch queen cells ill risk not getting them mated since drones start to get booted.

Most likely not because as soon as it leaves the nozzle it begins to cool and crystalize. So you would get less product dispersed because it would be cooling in the tube.

13:50 Supposedly Mites can not develop a resistance to formic or OAV due to the fact that this is not a poison, but rather a physically damaging treatment. For example it is very unlikely any humans could ever develop a resistance to fire. The mode of kill is completely different than methods that mites have developed resistance to.

  • @hootervillehoneybees8664

So fare my drone removal been knocking those mites out as good if not better than chemical treatment.. my first year doing it so will see how things end up.. still planning on chemical treatment in Aug because that's when the mites migrate into the worker brood.. going to treat 10 in each yard with apivar and build up into triples so I have enough in each yard to rebuild it those big units laugh at winter and are ready to split early.. the rest of the production ether doing a formic or requeen with a cell do couple rounds of oav . I can do the same thing as formic by caging the queen for couple weeks save bunch of money doing it.. won't lose anymore production ether way . Maybe I'll try 3 different ones. I want as much honey as possible goldenrod sells really good people with allergies are looking for it . We agree on most things seem spot on imo . Yes just say no to Aug splits only 50% make it and way higher feed bill . Those big triples normally do well on goldenrod if you don't split them in Aug . Just dropped cells in 6 starters fixing to rebuild the rest of the nuc battery before Aug . I make them in July they build up into triple 4 frame boxes normally feed themselves just fine.. I don't have enough frames so Ill just start them in single 4 frame equipment. Needs to stop raining why were seeing efb south of Lapeer. My yards north of Lapeer have more pollen less rain fall. Got like 6" more last night ridiculous two years in row . Last July we broke record rain hopefully we don't repeat it

I'm a new bee. So I could be entirely wrong. The spotty foundation, add more coating to the undrawn foundation. Use an electric meat carving knives to trim back comb that is drawn out too far into the bee space. I think, if you had split the new frames and foundation between the brood boxes, so you have fresh/drawn/fresh/drawn/fresh/drawn extra. If a fresh one is next to a drawn, they can not draw out into the bee space. That double wide comb, trim it back to proper width and feed the spilt honey back to them. Just my thoughts.

you select for the trait of mating flights?? I'm curious how that is done, what's your statistics for queens that "don't do mating flights you like?" compared to correct mating flights? and how you select for that, then how prominent is that trait? or how you know it's not enviroment and not genetics at all? and what does it matter and how it correlated to survival? As a small TF queen producer I very rigorously test and select for traits I've seen over 6 years., and know that most traits don't get passed on most important,I would never claim any fact over small traits I select for in my very distinct climate and enviroment. I'm curious how you've decided and met this goal over a few years and are so absolute about it you stated it as fact over a you tube video to thousands of people. if you have distinct stats and evidence of these points and most importantly how it correlates to survival please I would love a video of this info and other traits you Breed for and test and have evidence for! I would hope you don't just spew random opinions without any evidence or correlation over a how to you tube channel on beekeeping.

    • @beefitbeekeeping
      @beefitbeekeeping Před 11 dny

Hmmmm it is simple Pete..which Queen has the highest percentage of daughters that come back from their flights successfully? Then perform that same experiment in other yards, including some of your most difficult yards that have a higher number of predators. Also noting what is her egg laying pattern over the first week-2 weeks once returning from her mating flight compared to other queens. And finally how long did it take her daughters to get back from their flights? Was their rain? Cold? Extreme heat? Time of year? Flow or no flow? All of these factors do in fact play a roll as well as location. This is a simple experiment with stats that can be tracked over 5 years and counting to bring you to a conclusion. Compare it against other queens and outside genetics that you bring in to trial and you will continue to either credit or discredit your conclusion. Have a great day friend ♥️

All of my gives face the same direction. I get pelted with bees no matter where I approach or leave from. You can see them come out and change direction. They come out straight a few feet and then curve to their destination. 360 degrees.

Good old fashioned mouse traps with sunflower seeds work best.. i trap ALOT of mice on my land , especially by my hives. ..fyi 1 female mouse can turn into 1000 in a year.

😱😱 wow that’s scary!!! We have cats that roam the property but they didn’t seem to keep the mice at bay last winter.

Marla Spivak @ U of Minnisota has researched propolis extensively. She found the major source of propolis in her area was actually secretions from cottonwood tree leaves.

I went from 3 hives to 8 and might need to split 2 more this year. Waiting on hive boxes from Amazon 🥵. It's been expensive this year

Thank you for this fabulous, detailed information. I had figured I would have to give up on wax production til next year, but I’m going to keep at it now.
