  • We are getting to close to the time of year when varroa becomes an important thought on our minds... vaporizing a bee hive with oxalic acid is one of my favorite treatments to use to treat for varroa mites because it is the least harsh on the bees and doesn't have a whole lot of side effects like some of the other treatments have. So I hope this video helps in your search for your varroa mite management practice!

SHB Swiffer sheets.... simply put them on top of the top bars, and have one end pinned between the box and inner cover or lid so they can't remove it.

Also you should wear sealed goggles also to protect your eyes as they are in danger of exposure also.

I believe Jennifer Berrys recent research says that to be effective you need to oav every 2 to 3 days when there is capped brood. Dribble is only done once in winter when broodless. More effective than oav but challenging to do in some environments.

Emily I started using peppermint candy on each corner of the hive box. To my surprise it works on getting rid of SHB. So far everyone who has tried it says it works. I also use swifer sheets, put between edge of boxes hanging out a little so bees can't move them. I am very happy so far.

I have had some luck with peppermint also, but you have to reapply pretty frequently and I always forget. Have you found a way to prevent it from hindering the hive lid from setting down properly?

Yes i left a 3/4" shim on while I'm also using Apigaurd, and yes it's advised to use peppermint every one or two weeks.

    What was your mite count
    Before treating?
Most are using 4 grams per deep
No more than 5 days apart for 21 days
Or in late late fall 2 applications while there are near broodless
    Also
We make strips out of cardboard and soak them in a vegetable glycerin and oxalic acid mixture leave on for 40+days

According to UGA you would have to do OA every three days for 21 days to get a good kill

Is there a way to attach tubing to the vaporizer? could give you the option of activating it while standing away from the hive.

Most likely not because as soon as it leaves the nozzle it begins to cool and crystalize. So you would get less product dispersed because it would be cooling in the tube.

A little advise. I believe your mask is too large, make sure your cartridges are not out of date. And you can check your seal by holding your hands over the cartridge while trying to breath in. Good luck!
