Rufus Downwind Paddle Practice SUCCESS!! (very short lived)
I DID IT!! Well, kinda. I got on foil, but only for a few seconds. I totally didn't expect to get up, was intending to continue to work on standing on the board in the waves, but I had one little moment where the waves and my paddling came together early in the session. That gave me confidence and you can see me start to get it over the course of the session. I edited out a ton of falls and long paddles with no action, but I had a few moments and am stoked to share it. Can't wait to try again! Thanks for watching!

I learned a ton about my set up during the week I spent on the river. I finally solved my issue with getting ejected on speed change by adding the red shim to my Armstrong setup to reduce stabilizer lift. Huge improvement and something I think should be a starting point for lightweight riders under 65kg. I rode my new KT SuperK and absolutely love it, as well as a new North 4.2m Nova Pro. It wa...

      My board could be bigger for sure, it's short compared to the new ones, but I got it because it fits in my car roof box and I'll suffer in order not to have to put it in the car or on racks haha. Volume wise it's about right for someone my size, but my balance for SUP is not good and I could definitely use more volume if I could get it. I'm about 61kg and it's 100L so it should be good, but I can barely stand on it and I sink the nose all the time. But yeah, I was almost downwinding! So stoked, I honestly thought that moment was a long way off, but in the river conditions make it almost "easy". It gave me a lot of confidence, I know i can do it now. Thanks for the support man, hopefully we both are cruising downwind soon!

      @FluidFoil Před měsícem

      Yo Youdig! I appreciate your input on foil placement, I've started playing with mine now a bit and for sure it's got me confused about the best way to go. I've been watching a lot of vids of people with the same board as me to see where there feet are on the top deck. I've noticed I do stand a bit back from where some others do, so I'm looking forward to seeing how adjustments suit me. My shim is 2 degree and I have found I like that type of shim regardless of board or foil brand. I've tried Uni and Armstrong and with both I like the 2 degree shim. I have only tried it on three boards so far but on all of them I prefer the shim. KT, Armie, and Infinity prone board all felt better to me shimmed. I think it's just preference for board angle. I was watching the latest KT vids and Kane is using a similar shim even on his full brand new KT foil and KT board kit, which sorta surprised me but then he did say he just likes to ride nose up for level flight like you would on a surface surf board. Makes sense to me. I agree about the 1675, it's a beast! I like the lift though, and in this vid I really could see the early lift getting me going when I struggled a bit with smaller kit. Thanks for the comments man, it's great to get your input!

    • @youdigsurf
      @youdigsurf Před měsícem

      @@FluidFoil you think it's a preference but im pretty sure with the armstrong board you will have a lot more front foot naturaly just by moving your foil in the track . You can really go overboard with the front foot , and the same for goes for the backfoot. too much front and you are killing the speed of the foil and the ability to go upwind, too much backfoot and you will ride in a awkward position and make the foil very hard to ride at speed as you will get more and more backfoot and so on . For me while watching your video, you are just a little bit font footed not much so it's perfect like that . Usualy we can get used to everything, but remove your shim for one session and you will be shocked and wonder how you were riding like that before, i know because that exactly what happen to me riding with no rake shim with my new board. Maybe the kt foil gear is naturaly backfooted overall , it's can happen too ! some foil behave really differently. When i was using armstrong on a gong i was riding with a 2.5 degree shim so not this far from your setup !

I definitely have a use case for both when winging, and since the flat water paddle up is a goal I think I'll be using the big one more than ever. That said, the 1350 is a great light wind wing, I am finding it to be stable and fast, it's definitely helped me work through my jibes. • @youdigsurf
    @youdigsurf Před 2 měsíci

    2 degree that a huge top plate shim but doesnt surprise me with Armstrong has i made almost the same conclusion. Having a bigger foil might be better for those conditions, im not a big fan of big wing , i rather have a small wing & big foil and work on a lot of different manoeuver, instead of just going fast tho the utility of your setup is more oriented toward clean surf in the ocean. With a big foil when the wing get stronger on a lake you can even ride small bump which is really cool ! Yes the dw foil might be a good choice, but i think as well paired with a powerfull and light 5m wing in the low wind range.

    • @FluidFoil
      @FluidFoil Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks Youdig, I agree that the big wing is a pain,especially since I'm really short. It's always so light and variable here that I figured I'd get the biggest of everything, (DW board, pump foil, 8m) in order to maximize my opportunities. Hopefully as I go through the summer here I'll find a balance between huge wing and foil that works for me and won't always go right to the 8m. I'm glad I brought it this day though, I edit out a lot of waiting around for a gust and with a smaller wing I'm afraid I would wait a lot more. The shim is huge, but man it makes an enormous difference for me. I'm still all the way back in the tracks and feel like I'm constantly struggling not to breach. I think a lot of it is that I am really light weight at about 130lbs so it's hard to keep the foil down. The plate shim definitely helps me and for me the attitude of the board is more natural when shimmed. I feel like it's similar to riding a surfboard with the nose a bit higher than the tail when you are trimmed correctly. Thanks for the comment my friend! Hope you are getting some good days and making progress!

    Looking good out there! I have some gear questions for you. I have been foiling for about 5 years. Started with Wake behind a boat, then kiting, and then 2 years ago Wing Foiling. Missed about 11 months due to neck surgery but have been totally back since July 2023. My foiling system was Neil Pryde and Gong. Just bought my first Armstrong set up (A+) with 85 mast, 1525 HA and a HS1850. Last weekend winging did my first tack with this set up. Pretty much make all of my gybes now. I ordered a Down Wind board (Starboard Ace 7' 4" 120 L) I weigh about 190. I am hoping to get into riding ocean waves like you are doing. What front foil to you think is the best so far in learning. I saw one of your vids you were on a 1675 pumping wing and then the 880 now. I see you have the performance mast too? Is it a must in your opinion? I noticed in my foiling a little give is not a bad thing especially when you make a mistake. Seems more forgiving. Thanks man S

    • @FluidFoil
      @FluidFoil Před 4 měsíci

      Hey man, thanks for the kind words! In my experience I've found that a smaller foil was far easier for me to manage during the early prone learning stages. I found the bigger foils were really hard to control on the quick speed burst of take off and were really hard to control directionally due to the large span. When I dropped down to the 880 things got so much easier. I have much more control on take offs and can decide when to bring the board on foil. Unless you are riding incredibly low power waves, I'd recommend going with a smaller new Armie HA like the 880. I now think that size is a bit big for me on average waves but would likely be great for you at 190lbs. I just bought the 580 if that helps you gauge size. As for the mast, it's the only Armie mast I've tried so I can't really comment on the difference, but from what I hear there is a difference and I imagine if you went from an 85cm A+ to a shorter 79 APF there would be a marked difference in the overall system rigidity. I do think the stiffness is a fairly significant factor in how much control you have over the whole rig, I'd say it's worth it to get the APF if you can. Hope that helps man, and hope you are getting some water time.

    you went really further behind the wave with the firsts series, pretty sure if you had closer waves behind you would have connected ! i had a sick session like that one time wave were like flat faced you could stand up without making the board shake and have a gentle lift with perfect foot position and balance. I think initial speed is very important ! haha cold weather almost gone for us all those neoprene really doesnt help for progression but the good thing it's way less crowded tho. yeww 🤙

    I’m considering getting the same board for light wind winging and prone. How have you been liking it? Do you wish you sized up/down?

    • @FluidFoil
      @FluidFoil Před 6 měsíci

      I've been loving it! Honestly I sized it at 7' because that's what fits in my roof box, fortunately it's exactly the size recommended for my weight and skill on the KT site. That said, if I was more interested in pure SUP downwinding I think I would have preferred one a bit bigger. I am finding it really challenging to stand and paddle on this board, but folks much larger than me do it so it's all me. As for just light wind winging and prone, man, it's perfect. I wouldn't change a thing. I didn't expect to be using it for prone, and I feel like I probably should ride my smaller board more to get my pumping up to speed, but the KT paddles so incredibly fast. It's really nice in the line up for someone like me who spends more time paddling than pumping. For winging it's incredible, truly a game changer there, and I love the size. I would buy it again exactly the same all things considered.

    it's was very close indeed 👍 ! sometime i have the feeling you're starting right from the peak , i have more success with this kind of wave from the side when it's closing quick like that. Those kind of wave are really hard with a regular small foil board since it's closing really quick, the windows to take off is really small even with your board it's seem.🤙

    Nice work! What's your thinking for the 2 deg mast shim on the Performance mast? That's 3 degrees total angle, correct? Have you found the Dragonfly to be flying nose down too much on the 880? I ride the 7.7 Dragonfly SUP foiling no mast shim (HA1080, MA1225) and might be feeling a little nose down behaviour, but haven't played with shimming the plate. I ride the foil slammed to the front. Cheers!

    • @FluidFoil
      @FluidFoil Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks man! The mast shim is something I picked up from hearing Kane DW speak about it on a podcast. He explained he likes them because it feels more like the attitude of a surfboard or other surface craft, in that a surfboard doesn't plane flat, it planes nose high so your front foot is higher than your rear when you are trimmed and planing. As you can see I'm just learning, but I can say that the mast shim made an enormous difference for me in feeling like I could get over the foil and stand comfortably over it. Prior to the shim I was always feeling like I had too much front foot pressure and I think it was just my brain not wanting to let the nose drop far enough to trim the foil appropriately. It instantly felt great with the shim, I think it's definitely worth a try, although finding the longer screws can be a bit of a challenge.

      That's awesome Henry, I was waiting around out there a lot today and really should have grabbed my paddle and practiced myself. I am terrible with the paddle and standing on this thing is so frustrating, but I really want to get there. Good on ya for getting after it!! We will get there!

    seem a bit punchy and sometime way to big lol but you managed ! i laughed at the start with the effect you made ! do you have a rail saver of some sort around your board ? what it's called ?

    • @FluidFoil
      @FluidFoil Před 7 měsíci

      Haha thanks so much Youdig, you get me! Before the session I was like "maybe it's too much". It was too much lol! It's so funny how little wave power we need on the foil, I definitely was surprised by the size out there. It looked smaller from the bluffs! I just cut up some octopus traction into strips to make those rail savers. I put it on the short board mainly to improve grip when duck diving since the high volume short board is kind of thick and hard to grab compared to my normal short surf board. On the DW board I did the same for the same reason but it works great as protection from the paddle as well.

    @OCEANBOUND1 Před 7 měsíci

    nice dude, now I really wanna prone my dw or short board. I just haven't gotten to it for some reason but I gotta bring it out. hey how come you are adding 2 degree to the front of your mast? is it a KT thing?

    • @FluidFoil
      @FluidFoil Před 7 měsíci

      Yo J thanks for stopping by! Yeah man, prone is my thing since surfing is my first love, but I envy your wing skills and hope to get proficient at both as I go along here. You get such awesome swell rides on the wing, I can't wait to get there myself! So yeah, the 2° shim is something I picked up from Kane speaking in a podcast. I started foiling this summer winging on flat water and have been learning alone, so haven't really had anyone IRL to show me the ropes. So from day 1 on foil I always felt like I could barely keep the foil from breaching, no matter what set up I was on. I always have my masts all the way back in the tracks, regardless of board or foil brand (I've tried 3 brands and same on all) and I always felt like I needed a ton of front foot pressure. Then I heard Kane talking in an older podcast about how he always shims his base plate because it feels more natural to him. He describes that if you come from surfing or wake sports or wind sport when you are planing on your board the board isn't level. Your front foot is higher than your rear. That really clicked for me, I figured all of that front foot pressure I was feeling was my natural inclination to try to trim and struggling to point the nose down enough to glide the foil. As soon as I started using the shim my problems pretty much went away and all of a sudden I was easily getting my weight over and in front of the foil instead of just barely hanging off the back if you know what I mean. It made a huge difference in my progression and pumping, and it feels more natural to me on both of my boards and with both Armie and Uni gear. For me it was a game changer, but now that you are balanced on your foils it might not be a plus for you? Thanks for the comment man, I love watching your sessions!

      @@FluidFoil sorry I lost track of this one. I'd love to see what happens if you tried no shim later this season to see how it feels. as long as I have mast track to play with in either direction, I can usually fix it. when I started with the 1675, it had SO MUCH front foot pressure so I moved it from 8 back to 2 and 4. worked for a little while. then I ended up moving it back to 8 and even beyond... somehow my body has started reacting differently to it. so def worth revisiting if you ever have time! enjoying yr channel bud, keep it up!
