Hi guys! We are Greg, Jess & Lupe! After traveling full time in a van for 5 years, we are transitioning into part time travel while building out our home base in Southwestern Colorado. We're all about minimalism, living an alternative lifestyle and doing what's right for the planet. Despite building out 2 vans and traveling all over the world, developing our homestead will be our biggest challenge yet.

Well maintained road (trail?) did you ever have to employ 4wd?
Thanks for watching! It was much more maintained than I expected. We probably could have made it without 4wd but we turned it on in a couple spots to feel better.
@@DrifterJourneygottcha. I often tell my wife, “I can pull this off in 2wd” to which she exclaims “no, use 4wd!” Lol. Makes her more comfortable…
@stacky512a the first steep and narrow hill with a drop was the most concerning. I'm sure it would of been fine but you never know. The video made it look flat.
Is your truck fixed now?
Which issue? 😉 I'd say it's mostly fixed and we're out and about. We're still waiting on Chevy for a couple trim/finish items.
@@DrifterJourney oh sweet!
God damn this is beautiful!!!! I need to get out there soon ! We don’t got any like that out here in az !
It was pretty nice! We're out wandering in the woods all week and are hoping to find some other good spots. You should definitely swing up to the Silverton/Ouray area for some trails when you have time.
Awesome taco tour - now my mouth is watering.😊
Thanks for watching! We're always looking forward to our next taco meal.
Cinnamon Trail is on my bucket list I'm definitely going to go now
It was a good one! We're thinking about Engineer next. Thanks for watching.
Great content. I liked seeing your actual camper use in this one! You guys do get out there! Any water issues from windows etc in that rain?
Thanks for watching! We did have some water issues. Ours was one that wasn't getting the seam sealer when we picked it up. They have a new process to prevent water issues and they're currently updating ours under warranty to address it. We were able to keep the windows open with the vinyl inserts in to keep the rain out. It was just a few seams leaking a little. We should be out for another week and a half doing some more "testing".
Great to see you again! I thought those pass roads were for ATVs but then I’ve never owned a truck. Safe travels!
Thanks for watching! Some of the trails are for 50" and narrower but there are a lot that allow vehicles. It can get interesting when passing sometimes since they can still be narrow.
Hi which month did you do this hike
We did this hike in mid- August 2021.
@@DrifterJourneyThank you. Would you say the (Harding icefield) trail was worth it? You guys did not seem too blown away at the end
I would recommend it, just be prepared for it to be busy. It was truly one of the coolest hikes we did in Alaska, but there's a lot of people on the trail and maybe that's why we didn't seem super crazy about it in the video.
Good info. This helped me decide between the two. I picked up my Tune M1 in Denver last week and it is great. I like that they are doing installation outside of Denver now.
We're glad it was helpful! Let us know what you think of your camper as you begin taking it out on adventures.
hey man Ive been wanting sport model. your code still works TYVM for it saved 69 bucks. 2 thumbs up!!
also get some retractable ratchet straps much easer for motorcycle transportation.
Thanks for watching and also leaving a comment so others may find it easier. We're glad the code worked for you!
@@DrifterJourney BTW Rino make retractable ratchet straps. sounds like a good video for you to make. most every video of someone loading a motorcycle uses the old school retchet straps.
@ImACarbonCopy I've seen those but haven't been able to convince them to send us a sample......yet!
I’m wondering if I bought one to live in for free years, how would the materials hold up? Could there possibly be a hard-sided model? I’ve shrunk to 5’8”. Off like to be able to sleep in it without popping the top. I’d that possible? Thanks
Thanks for watching! I'd imagine the tent material will show some wear after years of use. It is replaceable if needed. Tune doesn't make a hard sided model but there are a few on the market. The Oru Bruin is collapsible and has hard sides. You could sleep in it without popping the top if you created a space in the bed of the truck for that. A 6ft bed truck might be the best for something like that.
I just want the best.
Sounds like you might like the Trelino between these two for sure
And I just got an ad for trelino on IG. Following me around - maybe one will end up on my door step!
Wouldn't that be convenient!
Looking good dad
We do our best!
There is a variation of the 5 gallon paint bucket method to make a human litter box suitable for truck and van camping. Use a 3 gallon paint bucket with a Gamma2 sealing lid. Its downside is that you do not get to use a toilet seat. The garbage bags need to be draped over the outer perimeter of the sealing lid when in use. The Trelino Evo S and the less expensive Boxio separation toilets are ideal for truck or van campers. Those two models only require a cubby space that is 12 inches high.
True, we ordered one of the screw-on lids when we first started van travel, thinking that we would use it when we were in transit. Turned out that we always just tied the bag off inside the bucket and put the toilet seat back on. Definitely like the look and design of the trelino better than the bucket!
Sure, I'll just strap a composting toilet to my backpack.
I've seen people carry stranger things into the woods...🤣
Old folding lawn chair with a cheap toilet seat attached works great as well. We would dig a trench narrow enough so the chair could straddle it, poo and fill.
Squatting over the hole is never the most fun. That sounds like a good solution. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the detailed and engrossing information
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! We aim to share information that folks may find useful.
I have the opportunity to purchase a zr2 bison from a local chevy dealer in this same sand dune color with the black alloy wheels. Just might go ahead and buy the truck
Sounds like a good opportunity! Although.......in all honesty......I don't know how hard they are to come by these days. Thanks for watching!
greetings, did they accepts usd, or did you use pesos
Gardenias takes credit cards and probably US dollars, but everywhere else will require pesos. You usually get a better deal if you pay in pesos.
@@DrifterJourney Thank you! Did you exchange the currency at airport?
I'm pretty sure there are currency exchange places at the airport, but the exchange rate will probably terrible. We've ways exchanged money at our hotel (they follow daily exchange rates), or in the case of when we were traveling in a van, we used our Charles schawb debit card to get cash at ATMs which doesn't charge international fees and refunds all ATM fees. Hope that helps!
@@DrifterJourney Helps alot! Thank you very much.

Gracias!
Great review thanks allot I will be 2
Thank you for watching. We're glad that you liked the review. We appreciate the comment. It helps more people find our videos.
Never got a update on repaires
I may have forgot to mention it in a newer video. They finally located a new radiator and got it put in. It seems to have fixed it so far.
San Felipe is perfect! It’s not fancy but it’s peaceful and perfect
It's a popular place and we know we're the minority for not really liking it - but the best part of Baja is that there's something for everyone! Thanks for watching!
Loves the videos guys! I got gmc canyon like your zr2 and also thinking about getting a Tune! How’s the suspension holding up ? Any thoughts of doing any suspension mods in the future? 😊
Thanks for watching! We were hoping to keep the suspension stock because we really like it (and paid for the ZR2 upgrade for the good stuff). It handles fine and is within the payload but we notice we sag a bit in the rear when we're fully loaded. We've been looking at the expedition leaf pack for the rear to even us out a bit and hopefully bring it back to the stock feeling of when there wasn't a camper on. It's not a rush for us so we'll see when we make it happen. Possibly before our next long Baja trip.
Worried about those dumb little fire starters where the men should be fishing that awesome river or at least showing the woman how. 🤦♂️
We regretted not bringing our fly rods with us as soon as we arrived. We weren't planning on camping near the water originally. As for the ladies, they are capable fisher people. Both Jess and Shannon are known to spear a fish or 2 in Mexico!
1st time watching your channel. Sorry if a little rude. Nothing better than camping in Colorado next to a river!
@NoCoSilver no worries. Rude comments seem to he the norm on the internet. Hope you find some of our videos enjoyable.
Can you share the location of that campsite?
Thanks for watching! We don't often name the campsites we visit directly. We do have a camp map (that is growing very slowly) on our Patreon for a small fee to help keep these places a little less crowded. It also helps support the channel.
The cigarette plug should work as long as it is regulated to at least 10 volts. If its not regulated, it wont sense enough power going out of the plug, and turn off after a few minutes. The connector you mentioned for the fan is an Anderson Power Pole. Make sure you get the right size.
Thanks for sharing! We got it dialed in with our Bluetti and everything seems to be working good so far. We have another fun trip coming up to continue testing our setup.
You forgot to mention the looks, far superior to project m
Very true! The Tune looks great on every rig I've seen them on so far.
I'm planning to do a build on a Tune M1 with the idea of making cabinets removable for when use the truck to haul things. Also hoping that I can rig up some kind of good protection for the floor and cabinets if I don't need the full space for hauling. Haven't figured out yet how to make everything modular/removable. 🤔
Thanks for watching! 80/20 might be a solution to check out for making an easily removable interior. We're still rolling with the bin system but it seems like we might make one shelf under the bed extension so we can access our bins easier when we're fully loaded. Time will tell.
@@DrifterJourney Thanks for the suggestion. I was also thinking of aluminum angles and tubing which is cheaper and lighter. But wood is easier for me so I might try with kiln-dried wood with some lightweight building methods I found online. I'm hoping to design something to connect the cabinets on the T-tracks.
@@davidrosen4951sounds like you might be on to something. Let us know how it goes once you get into it.
@@DrifterJourney Probably will pickup Tune M1 Sept. or Oct. Then start on build.
I have a 2024 Trail Boss built in January of 2024 that has a problem similar to this but it doesn't bind, it just blinks left 4 times and stops. It happens about 40% of the time. No solution yet from dealership as of a few days ago.
Interesting. I hope they can get that figured out for you soon.
Beautiful lake
It was our first time there and we were impressed too!
Very cool The View there is unbelievable beautiful need to come to Colorado do some exploring keep up with the good videos
Thanks for the kind comment! We love colorado and keep finding amazing places like this!
Nice video! My only feedback is with the title. I would consider this an unboxing and first look. Its not a review unless you’ve used it for a while and can comment more on its longevity, how it compares to competitors, etc.
Thanks for the feedback! We're looking forward to putting it to the test this summer and seeing how it holds up.
Is this just an all around paid advertisement? You gave no helpful information on Project M. Just a bias Tune plugin. I hope next review you do some research, because the camper you tried to knock has a 30 plus year track record of overlanding and still going on trucks. Just a guy on the internet looking for unbiased reviews.
Thanks for watching. This was not paid for by Tune. I'm obviously biased towards Tune because that's what we purchased. I clearly stated that I haven't seen a Project M in person and was just sharing things I heard/read and the few specs I read about online. In the end, the big bed sold me so I stopped looking. I am excited to see a Project M in person at some point so I can see if it changes my opinion. I'd love to do an in person comparison video if you know anyone that has one.
Great video, thanks for sharing! I have a Tune M1 just like yours and was looking for a rack solution, this seems to be it! Question: I have the fan as well. Do you have enough width to fit your surfboard up there between the edge of the bars and the fan? It doesn't look like the bars raise above the fan, but maybe they do?
Thanks for watching! I haven't put my boards up there yet but I dint think it's going to be an issue. I'm pretty sure I measured at one point and felt good about it. I'll share when I finally get around to trying. They better fit or I'll have to figure something out.
The hood cowl issue is from the hood when you open 2 far.
Yep! Poor design in my opinion. It pulls them out if I open it enough to put the prop rod in place.
Wow never had that issue. Bought mine in September. 69000k had front crank seal changed ,breaks done and now have a shudder/shake in reverse and drive when not moving!.
Thanks for watching! It was definitely an odd one but I'm glad it fixed itself. How do you have so many miles already? Hopefully you can get that new issue figured out.
Thanks for the videos. I’m ready to put our name’s down for the Tune M1 but husband isn’t sold on the idea of sleeping over the cab. The idea of climbing up high onto a sleeping platform and feeling the movement from other people or the dogs shifting around at night has him worried about getting a good night’s sleep. Do you notice a lot of wobble while you’re sleeping? Do you mind the up and down dance of getting in and out of bed?
Thanks for the insightful question! We don't mind climbing up and down. You can use the bump out as a step, but it's a little high for me (jess) so I like to step up onto a bin or our fridge first. The hardest part about the height is getting Lupe in and out of bed! As for the rocking - it does move and shake, I would assume this depends on the stiffness of your suspension. We have soft suspension and I'm a light sleeper so it does keep me up if Greg or Lupe are moving around a lot. I think any camper sitting in the bed of a truck would do this, regardless of whether it hangs over the cab since the flex comes from the suspension, not so much from the part that is cantilevered over the cab. Hope that helps and keep the questions coming!
Is there a swing arm that supports more than 275lbs. Be careful with your set up your bike alone weighs 278 lbs. Not including the bike hitch.
Thanks for watching! I have not found one that supports more weight (unfortunately). I know the stated limits and definitely know it's pushing it but my guess is that the rating is in its weakest position (open) and that it handles more than they say. I always tell folks to do their own research before trying products. With that said, we personally have not had any issues with the setup after several years of all types of roads and many miles driven.
Have you popped up the tent with gear on the rack? Any issues with the additional weight when opening up the tent? Love the videos on the Tune and Baja!
Thanks for watching! We haven't opened it up with anything up there yet. I may beef up the gas struts before a surf trip. I'll be putting a 25 pound fly rod holder on next week and that should give me an idea of how it changes it.
What a really cool area great video
It sure is nice up there! We're looking forward to many more new exploratory trips throughout the summer. We might even try out that buzz word overlanding.
So relaxing. It's what life is all about. 'Preciate Y'all!👍🤙

Thanks for watching! We went to the hot springs in town a couple days after this.
Is she an AI or real I cant tell
I sure hope she's real because I'm not into that fake stuff.
I enjoy your videos. I also plan to install a Tune M1 on my truck. Is the fan a must have? Also did you have to upgrade your suspension or tires to be able to support the camper?
Thanks for watching! We think that a fan is a must have to help keep air moving on those hot, still nights. They also help with condensation. That's just our personal experience. I did think that I may have wanted to mount it off to the side after the fact but I don't think it will be an issue for my surfboards. We didn't upgrade the suspension (and didn't want to since the ZR2 comes with some good stuff) but it does sag a bit when fully loaded since our payload is so low. We may put an expedition leaf pack in when we find the money but it rides great as is. I think it will help a bit when we load it full for long trips.
That’s a nice location
Thanks for watching! We kind of lucked out since it was our first time heading up that road. It sure beat the paid campground that we looked at first.
@@DrifterJourney I hope in the near future we can have a beer together and tacos
We're always up for some good tacos! And occasionally we'll have a beer.
Is the roof three separate pieces or is it one continuous piece?
It's looks to be 3 pieces separated by metal with track in it.
@@DrifterJourney thank you !
You're welcome.
I want to build a concrete home as well. What company or contractor you used?
Thanks for watching! We just called the local concrete company to have the footers and stemwalls done. The concrete company most likely will have a couple suggestions for companies that will put in the forms.
