Mastering Green Horse Training: Build Trust and Confidence
Get ready to master green horse training. Learn how to build trust and confidence with these basic training techniques for young or beginner horses or even an older horse needing some help.
I’m excited to share my latest video with you! This week, you'll get an authentic view of my fifth day of groundwork with a green 10-year-old mare that I’m re-starting under saddle.
In this uncut session (with just a few breaks for the mare to process), I demonstrate my basic groundwork techniques and how I use my body and energy to transition between trot and walk. You'll see how I help her relax and release tension, building trust and confidence every step of the way. At the end of the video, you'll also witness what happens when I use too much energy while walking towards her.
This video offers valuable insights into real-life horse training, focusing on developing a strong foundation of trust and confidence with a green horse.

This is a "real life" video demonstrating retraining with a very green OTTB and shows you a warts-and-all look at a training day. In this video, I show you how to teach your OTTB to stretch under the saddle. This is an important skill that will help your horse stay comfortable and injury-free during ridden work. Stretching also helps with the OTTB's mental attitude; when the horse's body soften...

Horse Riding Lesson - How To Warm Up Your Horse
Hey from the uk 🇬🇧 Great tips! You really explain everything so well! I am so glad I came across your page! Thanks so much
I absolutely love this woman she is amazing! I’m so glad I’ve just found her!
Thanks so much for this video! How do you teach them to stop without turning it to face you? My horse automatically tries to face up to me when he's going around on the circle, nevermind when I ask him to slow.
I have a horse that has been with me for 2 months. For the first month and a half he’s been great but has now started acting aggressive at feed time and trying to take the other horses food. I’ve been assertive in backing him off of hers but now he’s being confrontational and even turning his rear to me. Should I just start separating them during feeding to keep the peace or should I try this technique?
Thanks for your tips!
Afternoon🥰do you have any lessons to help get your horse a bit more round? I struggle quite a bit and my trainers also try to help but if you have anymore advice that would be amazing thank you!!😍
Yes I have an x harness racer, he’s a French trotter 5 years old, lovely temperament, was retired for being to slow, under saddle a lot worse than yours in this video, wouldn’t stand, trot when he wanted, fighting the bit and not accepting it, was getting a little hairy so I’ve gone to long line( he has done carriage but behaved the same and carriage will be his main work) started to get results on the long line, almost exactly the same as you’ve done in the video, a different bit has helped, after a week he is stopping, can stand still, not going into trot when he wants and so far he’s been just a gentle lazy trot rather than a manic dash, I’ll perfect the long rein and back to saddle as you’ve done in this video, saddle was fitted by a pro, did change bridle to bare basic with no nose band, do have an OTTB point to pointer, highly strung, did the same but 9 years later is she see a 4 km straight track ahead race mode goes ON
This lesson was just what I needed. My horse has lost confidence in her canter. She had ulcers which was making canter painful, and she started performing every time I asked for transition. Took us a while to diagnose the cause & treat the ulcers, but the legacy is she gets flustered and wants to perform at transition times. I have been looking for a way to get her to just relax into it as she used to. So today I tried this exercise & it was brilliant. As you said on the video they starti thinking about the downward transition, this took her mind off feeling fussed. The upward transition was far smoother, she held her frame better in it. I was mindful not to work on it to much, but really feel it’s going to help us work through this bump in our road together. Thankyou
Just watching some of your previous content love this❤
Brilliant video. I recently took on an OTTB and have been scratching at my head as to what order to train him with things. This was incredibly helpful.
This found this nudro Josie great❤
Do you lessons on how to handle/ train a highly sensitive horse?
I teach that in Basic Horse Training Academy www.basichorsetraining.com/courses/basic-horse-training-academy
Morning Josie, what brand is your saddle please?
That one is an Ammo Half Breed. It’s synthetic and light in weight 😊
@@BasicHorseTraining thank you Josie. Nga mihi Nui.
nau mai 😊
@BasicHorseTraining hi josie. Can I get some advice pls? My stockhorse is playing up when I ride him. He stops walking and refuses to walk on. I can only put so much pressure on him with aids and I'm sure he'd escalate if I hit him with a crop. Do you think getting off him and lunging him would fix the problem? He's done it quite a few times now.😟
Omg he's like licking your hand for the first 2 minutes! Lol
I started riding 1yr ago at the age of 57. I ride the most beautiful school horse and watching you for the year I've been learning has helped me understand how to try and be "soft". Obviously I'm not great at that, but I try. Thanks so much on behalf of my amazing horse.
You make this look so easy! I tried to lunge this 22 yo ex trail horse who's been wasting in a pasture for 3-4 years. I've got weight back on him in the past month and we've very briefly barbacked 3x. Today I tried to get him walking the circle and he just looks at me like what is this bro haha. He's very lazy and doesn't want to keep walking forward which is my ultimate goal. Thought lunging may at least build some trust with eachother outside of just leading him around my pasture. I'll meed to watch this a few times and see if I can get him to respond. I'm at least trying to get him.some exercise
Just what I'm learning now. Great explanation!
Wow...very informative ...for new horse owner ...this is Kumar from India
Lovely Josie! You're very intuitive, kind & practical in your approach. Always glean something of value from your videos! Thankyou for sharing! Enjoyable to watch too! ❤
Hello! What is your advice with a horse being stubborn and not listen to your aids? I have a riding class at 6:30 p.m (horses eat their dinner) and my horse wouldn't listen or pay attention to me during the class. My coach says I should use my legs and kick hard.
Thank u so much! Im going to try this on my new horse!😁
Could you do a video about the stages of speed? The horses can go?
Thank you this helped me so much when I was trying to learn Canter
I dod exactly what you said we shouldnt do😅 thank u for this video
Broken in? Who wants a damaged horse😢
Doesnt regular mowing take away the nutrition profile of the grass?
@basichorsetraining how do you work on a shorter collected canter with an endurance horse? No trainer options here 😢
I've never heard this strategy before, and I love it. Going to try in my lessons. Thank you, Josie!
Love watching your videos Josie. I have trained like this for many years and it is great to see someone else giving the time the horse needs. Keep up the great work!
Thank you SO much for these! I'm starting a mustang filly right now and I'm so glad I found your videos :)
I know I’m coming to the video later, but when I’m cantering my young horse he “motorcycles” leans really far inside on the circle. It makes me want to sit on outside sit bone thinking it will balance him out but it’s really not because it’s messing his bend up. I’m trying to focus on sitting up straight and using inside leg to old him up, which I think is correct aid (I hope)
Great lesson! Patience and timing so well executed on a very green, potentially twitchy, sideways runner on her first ride in the arena...on a windy day! 😬 And, the draw of three equine spectators at the fence to boot. Your timing with quick but soft correction and diversion before she gets to think about it too much while translating what you're observing and feeling, and more often than not intuiting, into our language, simultaneously, well, what can I say besides...exemplary! Good finish, too, for all the excellent reasons you cited. I am always impressed at your ability to talk about what you're doing while doing it without it being distracting to the horse because, I think, they think you're talking to them. 🤔 But, when it requires your full concentration the horse gets all your attention - not your audience! Some trainers are too busy talking to the camera and you can tell the horse knows the focus is not on them. As usual, your lessons are a joy to watch. Thank you for all you do for the horses and being so generous with your expertise.
Hi! I feel like i can’t relax my thighs if i have to hold with my lower legs to keep them stable. BUT, if i don’t hold with my lower legs, i will pop out of my saddle (actually, i do pop out even with my lower legs held tight). Please help🙏
I feel sad I missed this!!
Wonderful video, wonderful and sensitive approach, at the end I had tears in my eyes... I don't have many opportunities to work with horses from the ground yet, I'm an occasional rider, but your videos are inspiring and if my dream of owning a horse comes true one day, I wish I could approach him and take care like you ❤ Also i would like to see how you work with horse thats like this mare at the beginning of journey. And again, thank you very very much ❤
Also love alll your videos
I could really use some help, my horse is medium green, this is more behavorial,i used your bump bump technique and when using half the arena she does that fine, but at the trott( being in the open part of the arena( no rails) she does this wierd thing of twisting her neck to inside and her body is twisting to the outside not straight... i dont know what i need to change on my aids, to keep her staight and forward.it feels like shes resisting and blocking me..any helpful aids i can try to get her to understand what i want, until she gets this im at a standstill in my dressage❤ thanks Josie
I wish my mare was nicer..going on 3 yrs and she stil pulls faces and does me dirty..I treat her with only kindness...it's gotten me nowhere 😢
Just starting groundwork with a horse I am leasing. This is super helpful. Thank you!
Could you do a video on counting canter strides? I'm struggling a bit myself, and think it would be beneficial for me and my horse to be able to canter with more ease, and me understandings his gaits further. Thanks for this great video as well! Your so fun to watch and your tips have helped me so much.
I’m so glad you find them helpful. Yes I will do a video for you. Do you mean counting each stride or each step of the stride so you know where your horses feet are?
I absolutely love your videos!! You have helped me so much with all your dressage videos!
This is helpful. I have a 3yr filly and she’s learning so fast but when I lunge her she gets in a trot then stops and looks at me. It’s been difficult for me to get her to keep going. If I can get her to go two or three full circles I’ll stop her before she does hoping that will register in her brain. Any pointers? Thank you for the video.
I was doing it very wrong! I was putting most of my weight on the horse because I didn’t know how I else to balance. Thank you for this tutorial!
Great video as always - such a wonderful mare ! There are so many things to take from this video. Thanks for sharing
You are so very welcome 🤗
Lovely lovely video, thank you so much for sharing. She is indeed a very sensitive mare! Such a wonderful patient, kind, thoughtful open trainer you are, such a joy to watch ❤❤❤
Thank you for such a beautiful comment 🥰
I've been watching your approach and methods for some time now. My approach is very similar, but I'm always eager to learn new things. Thank you for the time you put into making the videos. I'm currently starting a 7 y.o. mustang mare, and with lots of work, she is now totally and thoroughly halter broke. She was shut down but is very sensitive. I love working with her. So, thanks again. Blessings to you.
Sounds like your girl is in good hands 😊. Best of luck with her and thank you for taking the time to leave me a comment. I appreciate it
Thank you for wonderfull work!
You are welcome 🤗
I love how you describe her as a person. Shows how in touch you are with Milo
❤️
One cool lady.❤😊 like your style.
Thank you ☺️
I'm finding it so hard to be light but firm with my little horse. I'm finding myself being a bit too firm.
That’s fine because you are aware of it. It takes time but keep going. You will do it I know 🤗
@BasicHorseTraining Thanks, Josie. I think it's because I raised four men, and the only other horse I started was a mischievous clever colt that I had to be firm with.
