Japanese patchwork bag 'happy bag (Shiawase bag)'
Thank you for watching!
These patchwork bags were mainly made in 19-20th century. The materials they used were often remnants of silk crape Kimono fabric called ‘Chirimen (縮緬)’.
In this video, I used some cotton quilting fabric, hand sewing thread (size 30) and a general hand sewing needle. You can use a sewing machine too.
If you’re making a larger bag, it would be a good idea to add some interfacing.
These are the photos of vintage patchwork bags (Source: Tokyo Museum Collection)

Here are the measurements I used in this video:
The outer panels (x4): A:B:C = 5cm : 20cm : 15cm
(The actual size of fabric including 1cm seam allowance around it: A=9cm, B=23.5cm, C=16.3cm - Please make sure that you don’t simply add 2cm to each length as this pattern involves an angled side. You’ll need to draw the seam allowance 1cm outside of each lines.)
The inner side panel: (Dx4) x E = 28cm : 10.5cm
(The actual size of fabric including 1cm seam allowance was 10cmx12.5cm.)
The inner bottom panel DxD = 7cm x 7cm
(The actual size including seam allowance: 9cm x 9cm)
The string casing (x2) (Dx2) x 3-4cm = 14cm x 3cm
(The actual size including seam allowance: 16cm x 5cm - the width of the casing may need to be adjusted depending on the thickness of your strings)
The strings (x2) Dx4 + 20cm = 48cm (0.7cm width)
The internal bag (中袋)is often made differently to what I made. I have put the photo of the different style on my instagram page. I hope to show you how to make it in the future in another video!

Thank you for watching! In this video, I tried my best to explain the details with my limited English but I'm not very confident...I think you don't have to follow specific method, as long as what you made serves your purpose. Отличная идея для меня!

Thanks!
I prefer just rows of plain stitches with no pattern. Too much detail detracts from the finished item and makes it look 'commercial'.
You can enjoy plain running stitches💕Many of traditional patterns have their own meanings and women used to stitch them to show their love and care to their families😊
Very good but I don't think many households have plenty of old gauze lying around !

Exactly! I have been looking into some old sewing textbooks which were used at primary schools and high schools in old times in Japan, and it looks like they used to practice stitching first by making Zokins😊
I found this video some hours after I started mending my clothes. I'm actually doing "sashiko". what serendipity!

Do you find sashiko thread to be "softer" than embroidery thread. Embroidery thread is a sensory nightmare for me.
Hi😊 I don’t know how to describe that but Sashiko thread is twined relatively loosely and they are not coated like other thread. Also, we don’t use a hoop like embroidery. So overall, it does feel different to embroidery (though I’m not sure if it solves the problem for you). The sensory effect you’re talking about may be also due to the fact the fabric is kept taut when you stitch embroidery?
i think its a great hand crafting activity for idle hands while watching tv. i always get anxious if iam not actively doing anything. Better then being on the phone and in the end you end up with something nice and useful
It’s somehow relaxing to make Zokin than looking at a screen😊 💕💕
Thank you for your video. I know very little about sashiko so I've a question. - I was taught that the running stitch is unreliable! I'm curious how the sashiko stitches don't pull out when you're cleaning. If a stitch caught on something wouldn't it pull apart? Or at least one whole string be pulled loose? Maybe I'm too overzealous when I'm scrubbing, but even the old facecloths I use for cleaning come apart eventually...
Hi! If you have a short thread which runs straight, you can pull it out by pulling it from one side. However, with Sashiko, the long thread turns many times so it doesn’t jut run straight. You’ll find it’s actually hard to pull it out even if you want to (when you made a mistake and want to fix it). It almost feels like you’re weaving the thread in the fabric. If each stitch is long and it gets caught on something, it may get pulled a little just like what happens to fabric. As to Zokin, it gets squeezed and rubbed many times, it can snap at one spot eventually. It doesn’t matter much though because there are so many stitches holding the Zokin together. The Zokin I showed first (at 00:15) is almost 2 years old. You can see that, the threads have snapped at a couple of places but the Zokin itself is intact. I hope this answers to your question😊
@@thegreenwrapper This is a great answer! -The running stitch clearly has more to offer than my sewing teacher thought 😉. Thank you!
Fantastic tutorial. Can’t wait to make one! Thank you! ❤

I've never liked sashiko until I saw your video about zokins, I was so impressed how useful, practical and beautiful it makes everyday things! <3 I feel so inspired I want to make them too c:
Thank you so much! I’m so happy that many people appreciate the effect of Sashiko💕💕 Sashiko is not really ornamental embroidery (though you can enjoy it like that too) but more practical stitching. We have a culture to value beauty in practicality. I love Sashiko because I can use and enjoy it in my everyday life😊
Thank you so much for these 2 videos on how to make the thimbles. I can't find any of them for sale, not even the online shops that will ship to my country. I am definately going to make the leather one as I have experience with this type of material. I'm thinking of maybe inserting one of those little metal disc's used to pair up with phone magnets instead of another piece of leather. I would also like to try the metal button version but I don't have any and I can't buy just one or two so I'll have to find an alternative like some kind of bottle cap...maybe. Anyway maybe instead of being covered all in fabric the outside could be made with a bit less fabric so it doesn't completely cover the inside. Then you could cut a circle of leather to fit just inside the rim and glue it. Would probably last longer than the fabric. This is just a suggestion, I can't wait to binge on the rest of your videos. Thanks ❤😊❤❤
Thank you for your ideas and suggestions💕💕 I think it’s a good idea to adjust and improve the thimble for your preferences😊 I should also try to think about how to improve it👍

You can absolutely use the effect of Sashiko for a pot holder💕💕
I love this! Do you recommend regular thread or embroidery floss for the stitches?
I think anything suitable for hand sewing and something thick enough to ensure the squeezing is fine. The common thread I think is regular cotton hand sewing thread m. I use Sashiko thread as it’s thick and strong (and I happen to have them a lot). If using embroidery thread, I’d recommend using 2-4 strand depending on the material.
