I was going to buy the book but it seems there's no more kits or boards and questionable whether there will be more. Links on their website just go in circles and never to real information about the build. Am I missing the right links somewhere?
Nice presentation. Kinda long. Just getting into FT8 and 4. Still working on my OCF wire antenna. You have a very nice setup where you are. I'm in an HOA so stealth is a requirement. Not sure if the wire antenna will do the trick or a Flag pole setup might work here for me. Anyway, Sub'd and liked.
Excellent! This dovetails perfectly with last nights stream from "Ham Radio Wilderness w/Frank (KG6NLW)"

GMRS linking starts around 1 hr 13 mins.
ratpac has had some really good presentations lately. The hams guide to gmrs probably one of the best and most up to date gmrs video and now this one being as we are having more solar storms lately. Good info and thank you for sharing these and thanks to the presenters that put these together.
Thank you for uploading this!
sounds like Matthew needs a PIO Public Information Officer to go around and take pics of deployments so they can get more publicity and record their work.
the knack OH NO an engineer LOL
Great presentation sir! The talk about neighborhood uses, the LDS Prepper has a couple good videos on how they built their community comms plan. 73 all
Cash is something I don't hear on most emergency prep lists. I'm glad someone with a platform is thinking ahead thoroughly.
Great presentation, but I'm confused.. how can a private repeater group consider that frequency private and run you off from it? No one owns the frequency. They could switch their repeater off if they don't want you using it, but can't forbid you from using that frequency.
Yeah there's always the complaint that no one owns those frequencies so how can they do that. My only guess is they bought the equipment the repeater, duplexer, coax, antenna, possible tower, and are paying for the electricity used. So they get to control how much electricity you are using LOL :) Is it right>? not really but I kinda get it. It's a big cost to run a repeater and upkeep it so its only right to charge a small fee for the upkeep and power.
We might need maps again.
I have printed maps of my local area and offline digital maps (OpenStreetMaps) of my surrounding states and some states I might travel through to get to family. The printed maps are just printed on a laserjet so the ink doesn't run if it gets wet.
Thank You for the video Cheers.
I don't know any real ham who would waste their time to buy a license when they already have a better license than the best GMRS radio you could afford and playing by the rules only talks about 40 miles at best if you have a really high location for your repeat. And who are you going to talk to? What will you have in common besides the fact that you both bought your license. Are you that stupid or lonely that you need to basically go backwards to what is literally the CB RADIO
Excellant presetation.
Great presentation! As far as business use. The FCC will no longer gives a GMRS license to anyone but individuals. I don't see anything prohibiting it's use in the furtherance of a business(except banning advertising) but a business can no longer get a license and allow its employees to use it's license.
Just a friendly note their is no longer Dayton. Dayron is now an apartment complex. It is now Xenia Just wanted to clarify that.
Simplex repeaters are authorized on the 462 Main channels (15-22, "mobile, hand-held portable, repeater, base and fixed stations may transmit on these 8 channels"), and Part 95 repeaters have a height limit of 200ft before specific FAA and FCC approval is required. GMRS used to be Part 90(A), permitting part 90 radios. For a while, radios were being certified under part 90 and 95(E), but this has been discontinued by the FCC. Equipment already certified may continue to be used, but no new equipment will be certified.
The following information is straight from the horses mouth (FCC). I have been dealing with them for a couple years now with interference problems on local GMRS repeaters and in that time have gotten to know some of the EB agents and EB attorney. Linking is NOT allowed in no way PERIOD. They told me they will clarify this more the next time the regs get updated. During their investigations in the area for GMRS and amateur radio interference complaints they contacted the local people that had linked GMRS repeaters and told them they had to remove the link because it is not allowed. Using old part 90 LMR radios is fine as long as it only programmed for GMRS frequencies. Their standpoint was the LMR radios technical standards exceed the GMRS technical standards. I even kept a few of the emails where they told me this so I had it in writing. On a side note, working with EB agent Albert Furlow and EB attorney Laura Smith has always been a pleasure. They have made several presentations at local club luncheons and a full fledged presentation with the FCC regional director and ARRL regional director last year. Mike KC3OSD WRCH578

Very well done gents. I became licensed back 1994 and I’m a full UK licensed … G0… I had to then leave because of life but kept renewing my licence when required. Now I’ve just finished a dedicated ‘ shack ’ in the back garden / yard and will be going live in June 2024. SWL first because it’s changed so much with technology, I mean computers were still in their nappies / diapers then 🫣 CW always had a romantic appeal to myself and I’m going to do it. Recently I acquired a UK FIST Koch type tutor off a UK ham on eBay and will be using that along with other methods. Surprisingly because the exam back then was 12wpm the recognition was there but there was a tremendous brush up to do… the thing reminding myself is…it’s a hobby, not my job and I need to love it or it will get lost again and I’ll quit ( no I won’t ) Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed this and I’ve saved it to listen to again, maybe becoming a member later. Your approach and facility is nothing short of excellent… very well done Sirs.73. 💙 QRZ… G0 UVL ( UltraVioletLight 😉 )
This was FANTASTIC, Marty! Going through the ICS 700-800 now and the timing of this was perfect. Take care !!!-73 KQ4KIO
Would running power and using your water pipe sleeve affect the losses you measured over the different materials? I would think running more power increases the field around the transmission line, possibly having an effect on swr.
As a returning ham I'm sitting on the fence as to whether I should join a local club's efforts or go it alone. This presentation gave me a lot more to think over.
Fantastic Info... Now to apply for vanity after I get my General Amateur license.
I just started watching this. I wasn't getting notifications for RATPAC videos. I am terribly disorganized and desperately need to get off a body part and do something like this. Thanks for doing this.
How could one use open wire line for feeding say a Dual band vertical? Would you need 2 9:1 baluns?
You say that the line needs to be properly terminated, yet people ask about using open wire 600 ohm open wire directly to a dipole and you don't flinch. Your transmission line is centerpiece to your transmission system. It must be matched at both ends. If you start with a 50 ohm transmitter, you need to use a 12:1 at the input to your open wire 600 ohm line. That may be after a 50 ohm line of some length. If you then have a ~75 ohm antenna, then you can utilize a 8:1 to match it at the dipole center feedpoint. This is critical to any successful usage of open wire systems. Especially at 160 meters where RG-58 isn't really all that bad, it would probably outperform a mismatched 600 ohm feeder. The high power open wire at the first looked like an open wire coaxial cable with the center conductors tied together and the outer conductors tied together. Probably 50 ohms. Why didn't you properly load the test arrangements rather than shorting them on the ends? This made no sense to me. Return loss is the amount of signal going out compared to the reflected amount. So if you have a lossy transmission line that takes 50% of your 100W and the antenna transmits 50W, your return loss will look very good at around 45 or so. We need to look at the amount of current actually accepted by the antenna in real tests. If we don't do this, we are hiding our real results. You seem accomplished. I don't have a second class radio telegraph license. I'm just a school bus driver. N9XR

KE5WCT: Mike in Daingerfield TX - just found you site, love it. Learned CW in 63 with my dad for our first ticket. Joined Navy in Dec 63 and became Navy Radioman - CW mandatory, qualed at 18 wpm! Dropped the ham ticket until 82 and got my Navy Mars ticket as KN7OOK, but again dropped it (no equip and constant moves with a family). Dropped the CW when Navy dropped their requirements, and the Coasties shut down the Distress freqs. 2008 new ticket KE5WCT, and plan to get the 'fist' tuned up. Thanks for the CZcams!

worked on lots of ships with remote tuners fed by rg-213 to wire and verticle glass antennas 2-21 mHz without issue worldwide (ie: antarctica to north america) with 500 watts or less. At the same time worked the world from those ships on the ham bands with poor multiband verts and 150w or less (10-20 M due to antenna) fed with high loss coax rg-58 or 8x and was very succsesfull. I spent time at the CG commsta next door to KPH (NMC) back in the 70's and got to admit, wish they would have let us play ham there LOL. As I recall they had 10kw+ ssb and 2-4kw MF cw. As best I recall the hf antennas where rhombics aimed west and sw, not sure about the mf ones. enjoyed your video, thank you 73
You mentioned the time-out function on a repeater and that brought to mind an incident that happened during a hospital drill several years ago. In San Diego, ARES participates in hospital drill once or twice a year. We usually have a primary net on a UHF repeater and then use secondary and tertiary repeaters or simplex frequencies for passing traffic. We had a situation where one location had to pass a somewhat lengthy message to another location. They were directed to a secondary repeater in order to not tie up the primary net frequency. During the course of passing the traffic, the operator paused to let the repeater reset and as soon as she did, someone not involved in the drill jumped in wanting to chit chat with the operator. It took intervention from the net control (who was monitoring the frequency) to get the individual off the frequency. I suggest that, as part of any future presentation on passing traffic, you encourage the use of the phrase "more to follow" when an operator has to pause to reset a repeater or needs to pause to catch their breath on a simplex frequency.
My dad was a code instructor and radio operator in WW2 he could copy and type 35wpm and head read plain text up to 50-60wpm. I did get my general in 1968 but never got very good with code. once he got a rig that could do voice my rather weak skills vanished. I think it is like a language you struggle and then at some point something in your brain flips and you then can start building from there.
