Arrakis is the fief of the Duke Leto Atreides (previously belonging to the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen). This came to be after it was assigned to the Duke by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV of the House Corrino, ruler of the Galactic Imperium of the Known Universe. It is a very large desolate planet overrun with overlapping dunes with virtually no water existing on the planet. Arrakis would be unknown within the Imperium but it is only on this desert planet that the geriatric substance, the Spice Melange, can be found. The Spice is a psychoactive drug that extends life, expands consciousness, unlocks prescience in unique individuals (like Paul Atreides) and is the fuel the Spacing Guild use for safe faster-than-light travel - which is impossible without it. Without this drug, the Imperium of the Known Universe would fall. The Spice Melange is a chemical by-product of the biological life-cycle of the titantic sandworms that roam in the deep deserts of Arrakis - referred to as 'Shai-Hulud' by the native Fremen tribes. This makes harvesting the Spice Melange a very dangerous task for outsiders wishing to reap the benefits of this drug. A major theme of the Dune Saga is noble families and groups competing with one another for control of the Spice. He who controls the Spice, controls the Known Universe!
