Frank Herbert was ahead of his time! He traveled the time from future to past. I am mesmerized by his vision. Dune Novels are a masterpiece

The first one anyway. The next two are worth reading if you're really into it and it does tell quite a story, just not as well.
Now, I know I'm more than late to the conversation here, but while he's not here anymore... If anyone had to play Mr. Herbert in a biopic, I've always had this fascination that the late Robin Williams would play the famed author.

Journalism has always been ideological
Nothing wrong with being ideological, you just have to have the facts and proper context to back up your ideology.
For example, being for energy independence while denying the science of the effect fossil fuel has on our environment. The facts don't back-up the insistence that we use a diminishing dirty resources rather than renewables which use our environment for energy.
Frank Herbert was one of those old-fashioned conservatives, a sage. Of course, I'd say today it's harder to get into as many fields as he did as education requirements have risen and tuition to get degrees to even get in the door skyrocketed, but it's still possible to do what he did. It's what I'm doing.

Man's incredible, I am Reading 📚 Dune again after 30 years, He was right in what He said about renewable energy to. Dune is one of the deepest and unique Novel's ever written. ❤

Very interesting interview. Since the new movie came out (haven't seen it yet) my interest in the Dune Chronicles has been rekindled. Frank Herbert's vision of mankind's direction is very relevant to what is going on today. More of us should have listened to him. Subscribed.
"We have 40 years of fossil fuels till it runs out"....... this came out around 40 years ago... Frank was warning us
That info was so unreliable at the time. We’re always finding more. And we have a projected 400 years left right now. Still amazing what he was able to come up with thinking we were running out in his lifetime. He created a warning for everyone in the form of a sci-fi novel. I’m a huge fan of his. Just a jack of all trades kind of guy that can make an amazing story knowing about a ton of different things.
@@richieb74 we dont have 400 years left of fossile fuels. Its hard to messure how much fossile fuels are left underground because you cant calculate what is undiscovered. however we do know how much is available on the surface. Because fossile fuels are worth so much we can expect there are great investments made by searching for more. So the ammount of available surface oil will rise and fall based upon the ease of finding new oil. Based upon knowing there is a limited supply people are able to calculate the curve of decline of the available oils with the amount of surface oil. Scientist have calculated that highest amount of oil supplies available peaked in 2006. Since then the amount of available oil on the surface has decline because it becomes much harder to get new oil. The harder it is to get to out the oil, the higher the enviromental and monetary costs are of oil. See the rise of current oil and fossile fuel prices right now as an example of that. In the future years it gets harder and harder to find new oil and the price of fossile fuels will increase exponentally. Till we fight eachother for the last drop. Google oil peak for more information about it.

His “Dune” also reflected the growing concern about the health degradation with civilization.

I’m becoming more convinced that Dune is also a religious text.
It is, and yet it also is not. It's part of a lifetime of pondering about the problems of human existence.
Well, that 40 years figure was wrong. 45 years later, people are debating if we even passed the midway point (ie, peak oil), and it's not even the first time people claimed we passed it.
If we're real, the issue isn't that there's little fossil fuel, it's that there's too much.
Exactly. It doesn't matter when we're going to run out of fossil fuels. We need to make the change and switch to renewables in the majority of fields that don't absolutely require it.

Personally, I'm more in line with the IPCC who says we will need nuclear being deployed massively if we have any chance of being below 2°c.
My idea is renewable everywhere they are really truly the best solution (If you've got lot of sun because yo'ure near the equator then put solar panels. If you've got river for hydro, do it. If you've got enough for wind pwoer like north sea, then 100% do it.) but since this won't be enough (especially if we've got to change all the transporation system from oil to electric, and likewise with heating, industry, etc) we shouldn't get dogmatic and try to force it everywhere else. For the rest of the demand that can't be filled with renewable, just use nuclear.
Simple as that.
I'm rather pessimistic for this happening, though, so I think we're going to get 2.5/3°c at least.
Another thing is that my view is that fusion will be achieved eventually, and that's the true long term solution. I know the meme is that "Fusion is always 20 years away", but not only we already achieved it in fusion bombs (real funny how it's always quicker when it's for military purposes, eh... Seriously, kinda depressing), the timescale stayed the same because the investment stayed at basically nothing (Even projects like ITER are basically peanuts if we're serious) Anyway, if we've got a good nuclear infrastructure, then it will be easier to switch to fusion powerplants afterwards, so that's another reason to do it besides the emergency

This may have been the time between the two oil crises. The real problem we have is global warming/climate change.
Notice he was right about switching to renewables, but for the wrong reason. He was worried about oil running out, which would have been great, but fracking and horizontal drilling have resulted in MORE fossil fuels. Getting off of a drug is more possible if the supply simply dries up.

as far back as the mid 2000s this was a common sentiment.
To be fair, we've found a LOT more oil since then. It's also irrelevant to the conversation of ecology, as running out of oil was just one impetus to researching renewable energy.

He is an author! Obviously, he reads alot.
The original _Dune_ had a subtext of restoring the desert planet to what it might have once been with water and green growing things. That would make it less habitable for the sandworms and sandtrout and reduce the supply of melange-spice. But though they did restore the environment by the fourth book (except for one large, confined desert) they lost the worms. Whatever his environmental vision for Dune in the 1960s, it didn't seem relevant or desirable by the fourth book. There's even some question to whether the worms were natural to Dune or introduced, as the latter was said in one of the books, but seem impossible to do for other planets at the time.

No offense to Mr. Herbert, but the US Federal Government has been saying "there's only a few decades of oil left" since the 1800s. Now, I agree that renewables are where we should've gone and where we should go now. I'm simply saying "the Federal Government says" is a really shitty argument.
Yet every decade people latch onto "official" statements as fact, so long as it pushes their agenda. I remember reading government PSA's about how raising the number of women in the armed forces raises our combat effectiveness, despite there being zero evidence to support that. In fact, there are studies that showed mixed-sex or all-female units perform SUBSTANTIALLY worse than all-male units. Gender equality is a good thing to aim for, but not when it comes to life or death situations. Now here we are on the tail end of COVID, and I've honestly lost track of the CDC statements that were later contradicted by themselves.
That's why he said, "Now let's just assume their figures are correct." He was taking their words as an example of the importance of this issue, not regurgitating the government.
