  • In this video, I give a comprehensive and detailed introduction to the DUNE Universe created by Frank Herbert and also give a guide to the books in the DUNE Saga (the Original six Dune Books by Frank Herbert, the Expanded Dune Books by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, and even the Dune Encyclopedia by Dr. William E. McNelly). I discuss the Butlerian Jihad, the rise of different factions, groups and organisations such as the Mentats, the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild, and much more. I also discuss why the Holtzman Effect has caused future armies, soldiers and warriors to revert back to using swords and daggers in warfare. I also talk about the most valuable substance in the Dune Universe, the Spice Melange, and the legendary Sandworms/Shai-hulud that roam in the deep deserts on the planet Arrakis/Dune.

I read Dune at 10 and went on to devour anything related to it over and over. My son asked me about it and since I tend to go down the rabbit hole and get to excited talking about it we watched this together. Thanks.

Thanks for this. It took me 30 years to read Dune, after multiple attempts I finally read the whole book when I was 40. This video was informative, concise, and neatly wove together the various threads of the Dune universe, many of which were unfamiliar to me. Well done!

This was a super helpful video! I found it because someone on reddit linked it in a thread about Dune and said it was a good intro that doesn't include spoilers. Some friends and I are doing Dune for book club and this video reeeally helped the initial confusion since Herbert does a lot of name dropping without explaining.

I’m glad you enjoyed the video 😊. That Reddit link has really helped in directing people to this video in the past few days! I understand the initial confusion with Frank Herbert’s DUNE series. I had the same experience myself when reading DUNE for the first time (I actually read the first book years ago but didn’t continue the series because of my frustration with understanding the world) and it’s an experience that many other people seem to have. I made this type of video because I think you need a basic and solid understanding of the DUNE Universe and the Organisations within the Universe to really enjoy it. Without it, it can be a dense and frustrating read, however, with this basic foundational understanding, it is (in my opinion) a great read. I also hope it’s a great help for people who will be watching the new movie who’ve not read the books. Anyway, good luck with the DUNE book club 😁!

Great video synopsis of the original one and only Dune saga written by Frank Herbert. As far as I am concerned, Brian H. and Kevin J. A.'s Expanded Dune is not what Frank H. wanted. I m not interested in reading them, and never will. Not spending my money on literature that digresses from what was originally envisioned. I consider Dune Encyclopedia canon, and Brian H. can take his Herbert Estate and shove it!

It appears that you're right. I just watched @SecretsofDune video "A Guide to Dune Words: How to Pronounce GROUPS & ORGANIZATIONS According to Frank Herbert" and it shows (at 2:27 in the video) that Frank Herbert pronounced it as "TLEE-LACKS-OO" or "TLAY-LACKS-OO."
I apologise for for the slight deviation in my pronunciation (that's how I always said it in my head when reading the books). To be fair, that is an extremely awkward word lol.

I personally prefer another dune saga written by a Portuguese writer who's name is Carlos de Oliveira, which popularity is the exact opposite of that of Frank Herbert
