How I would DEPART this DOCK 6
This dock is a tough dock to get into and out of because there is no protection between you and your neighboring boats.
The easiest way to take your lines off is starting with the bow lines. We could take the lines off because they aren’t really doing too much but keeping the bow from swinging, but we move them first to prepare to depart. We have the pilings that the bow can rest on if necessary.
The second set of lines to take off are the stern lines. You want to put the engine in reverse and get tension on the spring lines. When you leave the engine in reverse, the mate is able to take the stern lines off easily and you will still be in the middle of your slip.
When your stern lines are off, you will take the boat out of reverse, back into neutral, and the boat will drift forward a bit. At this point, you want to begin to take your spring lines off and hang them back on the piling, and you are ready to go!

How I would DEPART this DOCK 7
zhlédnutí 41Před dnem
We have wind pushing us on the dock so it is tough to get the outboard boat out of the slip. Here is a technique that I use to battle the wind to get off the dock.
How to ANCHOR a BOAT
zhlédnutí 358Před dnem
When you approach an anchorage, and you see all the boats facing one way, it is safe to assume the wind is blowing from their bow to stern. The video is assuming there's no current. When you prepare to anchor you want to motor into the wind to drop you anchor in the same direction as the anchored vessels. If you were to approach the opposite way a throw your anchor, it is not as easily done and...
How I would APPROACH this DOCK 12
zhlédnutí 27Před dnem
This circumstance can get really tough because of the wind direction. I would come in straight, but stay as close as I can to the south dock as I enter. When I get close to my slip, I will turn to the left and prepare to reverse in.
How to HOLD POSITION in WIND 4
zhlédnutí 196Před dnem
If you had to choose to hold position with a one engine outboard, I would choose to hold position stern-to the wind or current. This is the reason why 👆🏽 #howtoboating #howto #boating #boat #driving #drive #holdposition #marker #yachting #yacht #stop

How to TIE your BOAT for this type of dock
The locking hitch is what we call an axe knot. Take a heavy strain and you will need to cut it off the cleat. 3 to 4 turns then flemish the remaining line.
Incorrect
Thank you for the information! :)
Depends on where your windage is. Big fwd house with masts n rigging you might be better stern first. Pilot house in the stern should weathercock bow into the wind
Are you thinking of a single screw inboard? Bow into the wind is best in that case.
Perfect! That's how every respectable sailor does it here in the Mediterranean.
If you sit to leeward though you can check your jib trim easier
Very true. What is more important to you?

nice
Go to the Engineer Officer at 0200 for the keys to the sea-chest. I was also wrapped in tin foil and spun around on the bow so they could "tune" the radar.
hahahahah yes I've heard about the second one!
@howtoboating In the U.S.C.G. in the 80's it was how you became part of a team. Today, it's considered having or bullying. It was hilarious!
Makes sense
Nice vid
Idk man a sailboat just doesn't look right to me without some cannons
hahahahaha I think they're out of view
If you don't know this maybe you should just stay on land 😅
Thanks Captain Obvious.
Seriously 😂😂
Don't skip the little stuff when teaching... you'll never make it to the big stuff
🤦🏻♂️ No stop
Nope. Full loop first, and then figure of eight.
There are a couple issues with that. Check out my other videos "how to tie a cleat" - explaining why
Old school captains back in the late 50es they put STP on the props and rudders .. before they figure out it didn't work

close!
That goes against everything I was ever taught.
It all depends on your tonnage, rope size, cleat size and type , situation and MOST importantly. Your experience. Provided it does what you needed it to the rest doesn’t matter. Very few things are right/wrong, black or white
Got only one engine😅
same concept applies to your single engine :)
Center engine should be a dual counter rotating propeller
Then it doesnt counter the propwalk properly
A dual propeller? no, there should not be a dual prop in the center engine and a single on each of the others

YESSS!!!!
That's 2 engines tho....
same concept applies using a single engine outboard
The fact that you felt this needed explaining 😅😅😅 Don’t get tricked = like me
hahahahahahah
At least there's a consensus.....

NICE!!!

almost!

Does size matter 😊
It does not here actually 😉
Does anyone have a right away technically? Or is it the one coming off the dock?
The docked boat should wait but it’s not actually in the rules!
As someone who has no experience with boating I would think that tide would matter just as much as current in this type of situation wether in river or lake? Interesting.
It definitely affects the way the boat handles, but this is just how the rules are...
@howtoboating cool man ! Keep up this content im subbing up for shure! It's definitely something interesting even for someone that doesn't get to boat very much. But it's good info to know.
You might as well grab a left handed hammer while you're at it.
yes haha
I hit a boat like this and he had the right of way but he was not watching where he was going.
In worst case scenario, always avoid collision if it comes down to it!
Yeah, but how is the Stand On vessel determined?
The stand on vessel is the vessel on the right (starboard side). Not sure how it was determined originally. Was that your question?
5 plus 15 = 25 : Interesting maths !
Very misleading title,,,come on, two engines being used not one, sinbad 😅
explain splitting the sticks
If you have two engines, to split the sticks you will put one engine in forward and one in reverse. Does this answer your question?
@@howtoboating That does give me a better understanding of what is going on in the video...thanks
Retired boat mechanic here. The port engine lower unit is in reverse, while the center and starboard lower units are in forward. The gearing inside the lower units are made to run at the same engine rpm in either forward or reverse. The reason they can do this indefinitely is because of how the gears are cut and the gear teeth meshing together with the proper tolerances. There's alot more going on in the lower unit than most people realize. If your curious, I recommend you google it.
At least you got the name right.
Exactly. .there are a bunch of people confusing new boaters with incorrect info on YT.. hope a lot of boaters get to see your simple explanation
I thought the sailing vessel that is higher to the wind on the starboard tac has right of way. So that vessel that was also on starboard but was sailing off wind would have to take the on coming vessel to stern.
These are two power vessels, if they are two sailing vessels, this rule still applies.
That "ookaay" sounded sooo nervous and scared.....
Bro your cameras are fucked who ever your showing to park is fucked 😂😂
All frank no beans
It's a boy! :)
How ya gonna say one engine when you are using both starboard and port engines, just not at the same time. I just don’t see the practical application of this. If both engines are working, why only use one at a time?
I do this on my single engine boat, wheel all the way one way, bump forward, wheel all the way the other way and bump backward. Can turn the boat nearly on its axis in a very confined space. He should have said he was simulating a single engine by using opposite engines for forward and reverse movements.
You got it exactly! :)
I use one at a time in this video. Here's the reason why - I teach both splitting the sticks AND this way. On certain types of boats, splitting the sticks is not very efficient, especially in high wind and high current. In a tight area, I'd rather use one engine at a time, so there's less chance of powering up and hitting things. This technique is what you'd use when driving a single engine outboard, and works in this case as well.
This is so so stupid...its an outboard, just turn your head.
The more you practice this, the more instinctive it becomes. Over time you won't need to look back when you're focused on distances between you and the dock.
Buddy ive been running a boat since i was a kid, nobody counts revolutions except when flushing out their steering fluid. When backing down, you better be looking at the stern. And if you're looking forward, but in close quarters, you still need to constantly glance to watch your stern. Your head should be on a swivel when docking. Inboards or the new big mercury engines is different. @howtoboating
The guy being taught in this vid is def going to crash into a dock while parking
He's getting lessons. The people that crash say they don't need them.
And why exactly don't you just look behind you. Seems like trying to look down and count is more distracting
In a tight area, you would rather focus on distances between objects rather than wondering about where your engines are. The more you practice this, the more instinctive it becomes.
Look The stinkn laws are so old these laws were what 200 plus years ago it’s bs it’s like for sailing ships with sails
If you cannot do this dont operate a boat
Would the other one be pulling backwards? And not pushing water forward. You basically have one in reverse 24/7 ?
the left prop spins counter clockwise when in forward while the right and center props spin clockwise in forward. They're all going forward, only the one is spinning the opposite direction
Still going forwards, but it prevents severe propwalk
@@maybeharold thanks for the responses guys.
Why not put the anti clockwise in middle so its more balanced as its only one etc or does it not work like that?
Wow, physics left the building 🤣🤣🤣🤣
