My honest opinion on the CASTE system as a Canadian Hindu

As a Canadian who is Hindu, CASTE is not something that I think about all the time. I was born in the 80’s and grew up in the 90’s and my first real exposure to “CASTE” was when I did a world religions course in Grade 11. But this one word has ruled Hinduism for so long and has shaped the perception of Hinduism to outsiders. Caste is now being weaponized in North America to target and profile H...

A few days back in a village in Uttarakhand a lower jaati village was threatened and denied resources from the village because a man from their tribe was too sick to play drums in the temple. So discrimination is still a problem in India and with Indians. But the case stands that if all Indians are jaativadi then all Muslims are jihadi and all black men are criminals.

In addition to the below, just add the following : Until Colonialisation , Indians never labelled their 10,000+ year culture, religion(s), way of life, philosophy as HINDUISM and never called themselves as HINDUS. It is the British colonialists that did that. We were followers of SANATAN DHARMA and we all had our own Gods & Goddessses. Even in the same family, each family member can worship different Gods or no God.....he or she can be Athiest or Agnostic

    (1) CASTE is 100% Portuguese word, which tells you everything about European social system. (2) The British East Indian company allowed Missionaries to travel to India......and in their attempts to convert poor Hindus to Christianity, they started implementing CASTE. First saying the Brahmins are a higher caste and others are lower caste. Then saying the higher caste look down and chastised the lower caste. Then having created the division, the Missionaries started converting the poor so called lower caste Indians to Christianity (3) The British when carrying out population consensus , simply labelled everyone as Hindus and divided them into these very general caste system

Okay, I’m going to have to take a look at what you’re talking about first before I can make my own judgements. Because what you’re saying is it’s an attempt to stereotype *all* Hindus as bad, when I got the impression it was leveling the playing field for everybody. You’re casting a really wide net over the situation. From a non-Hindu from the US. And yes, I used to live in Cali. This doesn’t seem like what California would do, as evidenced by the case finally being thrown out of court. But until I take a good look at it for myself, I’m just going to have to say they were sued and they were classified from good intentions. Yeah, I’m aware the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Also, “John Doe” or “Jane Doe” is what they call a person whose name is to be kept anonymous. Those aren’t actual names.

Its our fault that we failed to teach our kids. Most important aspect of hinfuism is asking questions but nowadays parents do not incourage their children to ask questions because they themselves have no idea about their religious practices. Even if the child asks any question then we dismiss it by giving stupid excuses or non sensible explanations. Due to lack of gurus too children have no option but to learn from internet or social midea which is full of hinduphobic contents. Thats why I have devided to educate myself though scriptures and in future if I have kids then I will also put them in religious tution where they can ask their queries from the guru. Every hindu should find a good religious teacher who can teach their kids at least basics of hindus and from whom their children can ask any questions. Also we should make sure that these teachers are not one of those castist, racist, sexist etc type teachers to further mislead our children. Unfortunately some teachers who have barely read any scriptures start teaching children and misguide them. They spread the same vulgar steriotypes about hinduism as it is spread by hinduphobics as these things have remained unquestioned for so long that many ppl started beliving it to be true. Following dharmic lifestyle since childhood is also important. One more important thing which many people ignore is that to mentain a society its most importent for women to be educated as they are the only ones who can properly inculcate dharmic values in children. But due to constent invasions in hindu society women had to stop gaining gurukul education and eventually they stopped Wearing janaue as well plus suciety became extremely discriminatory towers them as a result we have entire generation of non dharmic hindus who probably follow some practices as a habit but have no idea about it's real essence and then their next generation will easily get manipulated and converted. Weak women will evebtually lead to a hollow society with weak values.

Caste is definitely a limiting and polarizing word. However, the related scientifically rooted categorizations of people in Sanatan Dharma are rooted in genetic predispositions and genetic propensity to perform certain duties. In layman terms, "what's for you, is for you." That said, as with everything in Sanatani, the onus is on an individual to seek within and further develop oneself such that they can circumvent any predispositions that they might've been naturally presented with, and in such scenarios, Caste is irrelevant. Going back thousands of years though, to have a functional, orderly society in Bharat, rooted in duty, people and groups had to play their roles and unfortunately the nature of the beast was that some roles were more glorified than others. This societal structure was minimized to the 'Caste' label in a negative light. In essence, and as an example, a clan of generational blacksmiths, whose men averaged 5'3" in height and stature, would not be designated or expected to be the warriors or protectors of society. That role would be naturally assigned to a clan of naturally larger statures. Again, genetic predisposition at the core of designation. People tend to overlook this. In any regards limitations are meant to be challenged, and in most cases, it is up to the individual to break through such barriers and predispositions.

The varna system worked perfectly in ensuring smooth working of the society albeit with some not so good guys who manipulated it & took advantage of it, but hey, this is common in all societies across the board, in every corner of the world!
