There IS a problem with Hinduism (and it's with academics)

  • If you are living in North America and grew up Hindu, odds are you probably learned a little from your parents, maybe you went to the temple and enrolled in some classes -- chances are these classes weren’t mandatory, you came when you wanted and didn’t really take it seriously.
Fast forward a couple of years you are now in high school and then into university or college, you probably felt it was a GOOD idea to take a course on Hinduism. RIGHT?
Well-- WRONG CHOICE - I am here to tell you that you were sadly mistaken. While your intentions may have been noble and you were expressing an inner desire to learn more about your culture and heritage, a university setting is the LAST place you want to be going to learn more about YOUR religion.
The problem Hinduism is how Western Academia has reinterpreted our tradition. Keep watching to find out more!

This is so relatable. In my entire education from K-12 even through university every time Hinduism has been mentioned in the classroom it has been depicted as a backward and crude religion, while the abrahamic religions are painted as fair and progressive.

Finding Hindu studies is a difficult task in some instances. I have learned a lot from practicing Hindus but on a deeper vedic level it is not easy. When I lived in CA in the Bay area there were Vedic classes given that investigated the finer points of the subject and brought knowledge about Sanata Dharma that was very enlightening. Here in Phoenix AZ even the practicing Hindus want to learn more about the subject of the Vedics and Hindu philosophy but there are few (I have been told) available to teach it.
I have found that many adults know what they were taught as children but as they went into house hold years etc they did not pursue the knowledge. Now they may want to study deeper but aside from what is on line (for which I am thankful) there is not always much. Many of us scrutinize what we read on line and if it sounds fishy I have learned it probably is. I want to help spread truth and am glad to have you as a resource.

Jon Banks Only way to learn Hinduism is from "Acharyas" means masters who are practitioners. There are innumerable forms of practices like Tantrik, Vedic, Vedantik etc. Each of them have numerous sub divisions as there is no restrictions on the path chosen. Only constant is the search and not belief. Everything else one see is just outer shell related with popular culture and is dynamic. Only the "Sruthis" like Vedas/Agamas are constant as they contain basic principles like Truth, Selflessness, Dharma(untranslatable). etc. Other personal and communal practices, rules, regulations etc vary greatly and are continuously in flux according to the time. That is how we survived this far, not by resisting change but being the change and keeping the core stable.

I noticed this is the case with any religion from the books I checked out from the school library and ordered online.
Having such a rigid, academic perspective providing details in a historical, political, sociological context is great for those who are interested. But I don’t think that’s the case for most people, certainly not myself.
Little to no information in the context of a member of these religions is provided, not much is said about the actual philosophies, practices, beliefs, etc.
Especially books on Yōkai and Kami (deities, ghosts, demons, etc. of Japanese folklore).
And being that there isn’t much recorded history or remaining members of Native American religions, authentic insight is super limited.

I'm a first year PhD student in a leading Business school. The very first thing taught to us is social research, specifically conducting ethnographic research. Any academic who commits the grave mistake of super imposing his/her own culture or de-contextualizing native cultural motifs outside its people (called as 'disembodying natives' to signify the inherent ethnocentrism of such approach) is considered a lost cause, a disgrace to academic discipline. You can check a famous paper written by an American author that in a satirical way demonstrates this ethnocentrism (nacirema aka American in reverse).
Any school of thought or University that endorses such obvious ethnocentric reading is clearly unworthy of even being called an academic. Hence, all these so called academic hinduism experts are simply frauds. Plz understand that academic hindu is a disgraceful term, a blot on any academicians potential as it pints to their inclination for bias. No academic study or pursuit can be done without first respecting the human beings involved in making of that very phenomena which academics is trying to study. Wendy is a fraud. So are people endorsing her. They are not academicians.

For example: They use English to sanskrit dictionary written by white people rather then an actual Indian Guru or Rishi. (ii) Learn Hinduism from Hindus who practice it rather then a professor who eats beef burger in the morning and study Hinduism in evening. (iii) Read books by Rajiv malhotra and before buying any books on Hinduism search about the author whether he is a practicing Hindu (guru, yoga and meditation) or not. (iv) Try your best to get to correct interpretation of sanskrit verses rather then relying on wrong translations of western scholars.

I agree with you to an extent but the majority of Hindus today do not actually know much and the priests and priestesses (yes we used to have priestesses) are bad at explaining many things since we never had a preaching culture. Ex: I was talking to my buddy the other day and he didn't know what the Vedas were and he thought that we worship a cow as a God. As a Krishna Yajur Veda reciter, I was appalled. Also, my buddy is an atheist now because he found the cow thing to be stupid. When he asked his local priest, the priest was like, "We do not question these things because it is a sin or a 'papam'", lol. This is why, we need an unbiased outsider to actually study the religion with a fresh pair of eyes. We need to use all our resources and not preferentially choose actual Hindus because the majority of Hindus were just born into it and did not have to study anything. They just relied on misinformation passed down from generations. This is why the majority of people think that only men can be baptised (yajñōpavītam) into Hinduism and not women. It was the British who came in and made the Brahminas to show the real Vedic texts that ask both men and women to undergo baptism.

In terms of scientific research. Anthropology is a science subject and religion is theosophy. Anyways, Just keep things in mind. I don’t mind anybody reading all this because it is history. Yep i studied about caste & tribes from sociological & anthropological perspectives -

One should read - Ghurye, Kosambi, M N Srinivas, Dipankar Gupta, Ronald Inden, Nicholas Dirks, Susan Bayly, Sumit Guha etc.
Actually Dharmic religions {Hinduism, Buddhism & Jainism} were more about negotiating along the tribal terms then creating & imposing themselves & they did it via the Esoteric method like Tantra or Folk traditions.
