Arantxa’s forehand was her weaker side and players would play to it, but in big matches it tended to hold up well, much to their disappointment. If it was going to break down it was usually in earlier rounds or smaller tournaments.

Fernandez had a great game on grass. Clean, flat strokes, great all around game, good mover. She was always going to be a bad match up in the next round though as Graf just did everything better.

This was always a very nice match-up. A great contrast of styles put together on the court, as well as great characters and contrast of mindsets in the match. Irina Spirlea was very talented, her game patterned after Graf's, but she didn't possess the same level of mental fortitude and speed/footwork and fluidity/ease as Graf's- that's the difference. 97 was Spirlea's big year, and at the same time it was known to be Sanchez' off year. Sanchez was spent from all the many years playing and maintaining the very high level. But for both players, things would start to change by '98.

I have always loved spirlea beautiful form in every shot.

This was Arantxa's first time at the tour finals and she reached the semi finals. Oddly enough, she only managed to get to the semi final stage one other time, in 1993.

This was Arantxa's first ever win over Martina, and you can see how much it meant to her at the end. Martina was always a tough opponent for Arantxa. Their head to head was 12-3 to Martina.

The first set is an example of what frustrated me so much about Gaby. She is capable of beating any player that she wanted but her mental approach was her biggest enemy. In this first set she played so passively. So many shots falling short and/or right down the middle of the court. She can be such an aggressive player even from the baseline, but not in the first set. Things got better in the second set, but it was too little too late.

A good example of how weather conditions can affect a match on clay. The weather damp and humid, slowing the ball off the court and in the air. I suspect Steffi might have won this match if it had been played in hot, dry conditions.

It's NOT what you did, but what are you doing now that counts.

Did Sanchez Vicario get paid extra for doubling as a lines person?

Man Venus took so much out of players even though Arantxa won she never got back to even a quarterfinal after this don't let that scoreline fool you I watched it live and Conchita Martínez doesn't beat Arantxa 6-1 6-2.
