Arantxa playing a brilliant match tactically - using her slice backhand more than usual, hitting her forehand very crisply, and manoeuvring Monica around the court. Monica looked exhausted at times towards the end. By contrast, Monica seemed to have forgotten the tactics that won her so many matches against Arantxa. Instead of consistently attacking Arantxa's forehand Monica hit to Arantxa's backhand way too much, especially at key moments.

You are so right. This is one of the best matches of Arantxa’s matches. I wouldn’t have bet a cent on her before the match especially with Seles’ masterclass vs Hingis in the finals. Seles didn’t play a great match and she failed to kill it when she could (much like her USO95 final) but Arantxa did, especially from a tactical perspective. She had a great plan and executed it perfectly drawing Seles into her favorite type of play, rather than trading shots and losing like she did in many of their encounters.

@@jujumusique1305looking back, it fits in with a pattern Monica had in this second part of her career. After a big win at a grand slam, she then lost the following match. It happened here, at the 1999 Australian Open when she beat Graf then lost to Hingis, and then again at the 2002 Australian Open when she beat Venus Williams but then lost the next match again to Hingis.

@@zeddeka yup. Perfect analysis. It definitely was a pattern. And not only in slams, think about her monumental 2001 summer runs in San Diego and Los Angeles. She came out flat against Venus and Davenport after beating Capriati and Hingis (in straight sets) and then Hingis and Serena. And again in Miami 2002 when she lost in the 3rd set tiebreaker to Capriati after a phenomenal win vs Clijsters.
