11:00 So you're telling me Rome wasn't built in a day! haha
The mini ice age started with either a meteorite or volcano (possibly krakatoa), causing a two year winter, poverty, plague, etc. Interesting that we have recovered to the pre-mini ice age temperatures
Do you have any book recommendations regarding this period? Thanks.
If I want to cite you how can I do this (Harvard citation?)
11:00 that just made zero sense. During the time of the silk road Europe was not richer than most of the cities along the route.
Did he say the steppe people didn't have a civilization??
The annual bath thing actually comes from the Renaissance period not the middle ages. The had bath houses in medieval towns and they'd often get the plauge in the bath house so they started avoiding them.
Women have always been a key part of the church; behind every successful man is a nagging wife.🤓😂🥁
Thanks for the good video 👍
4:16 "the only "chink" in its armor." It's a slur for asian.
Hi Dr. Dave. Great video, I'm just a little confused. Are tenant farmers different from peasants, or is tenant farming a broad category for serfs, slaves, and free peasants? If you could let me know that would be awesome.
Very thorough, thanks!
The weight of plate armor and the resulting immobility are fairly common misconceptions. They are based on tournament armors which were indeed very heavy, because at a tournament you didn't need to be mobile. Combat plate armor was considerably lighter. We are talking about perhaps 30 kilograms, i.e. a bit over 60 pounds. And these armors were designed to balance protection and mobility. You can get on your horse in that on your own, and you can even climb a ladder or do pushups. It is of course a lot more exerting than without armor, but you can do it. There have been numerous trials in recent years that show that, many of them have been carried out under scientific conditions.
In truth, around 1350 or so, temperatures began to drop severely, heralding in what is called "the little ice age", which lasted until around the mid-1700s. So the temperature climb that climate alarmists claim began with the advent of the industrial revolution was actually due to the end of "the little ice age", when temperatures began to climb back up to what they normally would be during a non-glaciation period, which has happened numerous times on this planet.
That doesn't disprove contemporary climate change is caused by humans.
Great lecture before I even watched it but I know you did an awesome job on thee video like all the rest.
Very well explained!!! Thank you. I am African and our mentality/ worldview is totally different from that of Europeans. The movies do not explain this feudal society. Instead, we only see the monarchs and nobles in their palaces with their mute servants dressed up serving them, driving their chariots... but I always wanted to understand how Europeans designed their societies and how some were super rich and others utterly poor and could never change their position and the people seem happy to have a rich king while they themselves lived a poverty. It blew my mind but now I understand why Europeans went about colonizing everybody else and wanted more and more land. I understand why they brutalized other peoples on foreign lands, because they actually did that to their own in the middle age, never having fair contracts, instead they were always one superior and one inferior in their psyche. It’s actually their mindset. Plus, this mentality also follows us this day. It has slightly changed but we still have the 1% controlling the 90% of the wealth and the rest of us.
Right. Because no African leaders ever brutalized their own people? The people who sold the slaves to the Europeans were African rulers. Africa wasn't some egalitarian paradise, while Europe was barbaric and evil. Both continents had many, many bastards who ruled.
Shit that type of economy is really similar to the one we have in argentina
Thanks boss
16:47 nahnahnahhh you got it so wrong, sheep and goats were the small percentage, we mainly herded horses
There were no Dukes in England under the Anglo Norman kings. William retained the title Dux Normannorum and to establish others with a similar title in England would have diluted the King’s status and prestige. The title of earl (comes) is retained into the 14th century
28:15 You used an image depicting cannibals from Brazil, not European witches, it always gets to me when people don’t pay enough attention to these things, especially if it’s in a lecture.
Thank you for this wonderful lecture! So useful. Greetings from Chile.
One small detail, Ganshof was Belgian. But an amazing lecture!

Hey, Dr. Dave I went to you're most recent video and I noticed comment were turned off.I'd just like to say, ( and I'm not one of you're students), I think you really have potential as a youtuber. You can continue on teaching, but just do some videos on the side, you don't have to do much and you might even earn a few extra bucks Edit, sorry: I find you quite informative, and I just want more content from you
Oddly enough, I went from Mr. Terry History to Dr. Dave the Historian, and I'm glad I discovered this channel. Also, (as per YT comment rules) First!

Excellent explainer! Thanks man and greetings from NATO Finland.
Trade is only good as long as you have something to trade. If you have nothing to trade than what it becomes stagnate. Gift Economy would be a better approach because not all the time does someone have something to offer for trade. Those trades or better gifts to country B would be a much better process. If not than Country A becomes a hoarder & withholding goods, materials, resources from Country B. Jacque Fresco › We talk about civilization as though it's a static state. There are no civilized people yet, it's a process that's constantly going on... As long as you have war, police, prisons, crime, you are in the early stages of civilization. The Game of Trade breeds bad behaviours that create lots of problems for everyone: pollution of the environment, corruption, slavery, lies, killing of animals, and so on. The problem is that most people believe that human behaviour is the problem or the CRAP they create. So they either try to punish and change people's behaviour, or make the CRAP they create less crappy. And so those who try to fix this world are trapped in a loop because they don't address the 'elephant' in the room (the force): what makes people behave so badly.
Good lecture, thank you

Wow very good lecture! Fascinating history!
Thank you. Didn’t have time in college to take electives like this.
can I ask a thing about the feudalism?
Idk if the lecturer will answer but what's your question?
Well, now I have fodder for my novel, it'll help me develop the world is a realistic manner, thanks Doc
MA SHA ALLAH BROTHER
Great lecture! Im glad you didnt fall into the modern day garbage that the Germanic expansion into Britain was peaceful immigration of the Angles Saxons Jutes and yes Frisians, who by the way were already established on the eastern seaboard. One thing though, the Britons in England proper were not exterminated, but were assimilated after their warrior ruling class were wiped out or driven out.
Great video. I'm of the view that feudalism doesn't really exist. A landlord simply gave his land to a subject for yearly rent. This could be a King giving land to a Knight for Knight's service and scutage or a Knight giving land to a peasant for socage (yearly rent in goods or coin). Another word for this is revenue-leasing.
How often did the renter change?
@@TomiTapio once a year I suppose since harvest was usually once a year
Thanks Dr Dave
Very informative. Will be good, if u send presentation.
"A longbowman who could be trained in a matter of weeks" That isn't true as far as I'm aware. This is literally your job and I'm just some guy on the internet, so I admit my credentials don't amount to anything by comparison, but I'm pretty sure the truth is it takes a huge amount of training from a young age, boyhood even, to use an English longbow, and that other Europeans at the time didn't invest that kind of training so they couldn't use similar bows even if they did have them.
Also, the longbow didn't just appear out of nowhere. Iterations of the large selfbow design have been found or attested among many cultures and dates back as far the Paleolithic.
YESSS...good historians explain their topic and make it INTERESTING! So happy for this lecture.
Thanks Dave!
