Here's the fastest, safest way to thicken trunks for bonsai trees.Thickening bonsai trunks takes time. Here's how you can speed up the process, without the disadvantages of growing the ground. All the while keeping the nebari developing with attractive in-scale roots - rather than thick, ugly, out-of-scale carrot shaped nebari. Fixing Soil That Destroyed Bonsai Mother Tree
zhlédnutí 5KPřed 4 měsíci
I failed to repot this tree for several years past its due date. It's a nursery sourced Fuji Cherry mother tree. Not only did the soil completely break down, but the reduced foliage mass exacerbated the unbalance in the root system. For this reason it's often best to change the soil before doing pruning work on to style the branches. Newsletter: bit.ly/bonsainewsletter Support GroBonsai: www.pa...
Relaxing Repot Yamadori Bonsai Material (ambient music)

No talking (almost) bonsai repot work, ambient music. Yamadori essentially means collected from the wild, though being non-native this Potentilla was most likely collected from a garden. The second repot, I look at the planting angle, splitting unnecessary trunks and removing old soil. Repotting An Epic Potentilla Bonsai Material

Repotting an upright tree to create a cascading bonsai. Most trees and plants grow upwards so representing a tree hanging off a cliff often requires a dramatic angle change. Knowing when to repot a bonsai tree causes beginners confusion. These indicators are what I look for to start repotting a bonsai tree or bonsai material. Why Rosemary Bonsai Die & Tricks to Cope
explain the science thinking here
I'm not great with the science of grafting tbh. but i'll try a youtube comment attempt. the branch and trunk has a thin layer of meristem tissue (like our stem cells) called cambium. Where the exposed cambium of the branch and trunk meet, it is forced together as the branch thickens. As the cambium cells differentiate, and become vascular tissue, it forms one continuous piece from trunk to branch, completing the graft. The trunk then supplies the grafted branch directly with water and nutrients, and it becomes a continuation of the trunk, rather than a branch sticking out. When ready, I will chop the top of the trunk off, so that this branch becomes a new 'leader'. I haven't fact checked this!!! It's just a general brain dump according to my current understanding (enough to get it done, but not enough to pass an exam haha)
2028 grows into a money tree 🍃 😁
I hope so haha
She's a beauty!❤❤❤
I'm very fond of it! thanks
beautiful
thanks
Wow, what a difference
I know, i just checked and there's even more growth! phew, it barely grew all last year
Love your accent.
Thanks!
Beautiful bonsai!
Do you make a living out of doing this? Or is it a hobby? I subscribed to your channel. Because I feel like I could really learn quite a bit through your videos. Awesome content!
It's a long story, but I'm trying to! I'm in a weird stage where I'm trying to make the financial side work, but it's not quite there yet. thanks for the sub and kind words
Very nice->only do safe work on it
very true
Am learning to do Bonsai ❤❤
That's great, let me know if i can help, feel free to email or reach out. I'm afraid comments get easily buried here though, so apologies in advance if I miss any
Not dirt?
Yep, it's kinda tricky to discuss in YT comments. But the idea is to keep lots of oxygen in the root system, it encourages healthy roots and reduces risk of rot. The trade off is that you have to water more often, multiple times a day if it's hot
I've had great success cloning using fog misters, aeroponics spray nozzles and plane old coco coir. I much prefer coco because no electricity but the root success rate is lower 75% compared to fog 90~100%
I have similar experience. the cloner worked great for species that don't need a cloner! But harder species were just as hard. Maybe there is potential with the right temperature, humidity, timing and nutrients. But I don't have the space to experiment
Can you do a video of styling and caring for a bonsai?
I'll see what I can do
Potentilla!? Cinquefoil?
Yes, Potentilla fruticosa, aka shrubby cinquefoil
Turn the Bonsi into a scary witch for Halloween:)
That would be fun!
Can you do this with normal sized tree?
Yes, some species are more reluctant to root, but most broadleaf trees and shrubs can be air layered
@@grobonsai Thank you 😊
Its pronounced bone sai not bon sai😊
I’m pronouncing it in cursive
@@grobonsai 😅
I always soak the roots and then with a shower hose spray all the dirt from the roots. U dont tear anything
There are a couple disadvantages with that approach, so I don’t do that
@@grobonsai ohhhhhh. Please tell me. Btw not tap water but rain.
Great lesson. Thank you.
I love watching this. I love bonsai. I dont have any. But i love them
Thanks for watching, i appreciate your kind words
For how much time did you keep the air layer?
It took 18 months due to a problem rooting
@@grobonsai tks and great work🤜🤛
Hermoso ejemplar. Saludos desde Argentina 🇦🇷🎉
We've always got to interfere, eh?
You’re right, bonsai is the problem. If we would just stop bending branches!
I’m so glad you showed the tree a few months after, it looks so healthy and happy!
That sounds so fun!!
It is about to get started very soon, so it’s not too late!
Tamarack?
So that’s the common name of what Europeans call American larch. This tree is European larch. So close relation of the tamarack, yep
you know what would be good for that is labware parafin wax sealing sheets.
Yes! We use similar for sealing grafts also
NICE!!! 😊
Tymian is grate option as well
Yes definitely! They don’t like the U.K. climate when in bonsai training. But I’ve seen amazing examples from European mainland
What an art! Lovely
Blimey, i hve lot's to learn.
This is pretty advanced, definitely not normal day-to-day stuff. For example that’s the first time I’ve ever done a graft
Will this root growth technique work with other plants too like an indoor rose plant?
I’ve only tested on trees and shrubs. If the rose has root issues, it may help. Timing the repot is also important though. I don’t recommend doing this in mid summer on temperate species
❤❤❤❤🇭🇷
Am I the only one who noticed the little worm?!? 🐛
I’m glad someone noticed!
Wow, how wonderful 😊!!
Um that new one is not much bigger!
Extra depth is enough
I had a beautiful one for 12 years and it was left outside and a hard frost killed it😢
Sorry to hear that, it happens though
Wow! Well done!❤
Bouffant !!!
Two tiny owls on the dead limbs! Owl Buds on Bonsai!😊
That would be great 👍 love owls
Should also educate people on how much that bonsai tree actually cost
This didn’t cost anything, it was left to me when the owner emigrated, long-term loan I guess I’d call it. I’m also terrible at pricing trees, I undercharge but overpay!
Short on top and long at the sides is my suggestion for a great style.
Like a mullet?

101 question please... Once in the basket, properly settled in the lava/perlite.. do i leave it in a saucer or just on the shelf, in a larger full pot...? Where do I sit it after putting it in the basket please?
Where ever is appropriate for the plant in terms of light etc. this setup does dry faster so may need watering more often, you gotta check on it more frequently
any reason people dont use water to spray off the dirt from roots when changing?
I avoid it because it’s harder to control, disturbs microbial organisms, and is messy. But plenty of people do use it
U ROCK🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
When lindens flower, the scent is delightful.
Yes, amazing, there’s a landscape tree nearby that just hit peak scent
I am very connected to the plants.. They absoulutely dont like to be turn into bonsai.. Their aura gets damaged.
I’d like to learn more but comment section isn’t the best place to discuss
