    Now I published the video and had a moment to put my ego aside, I do think the likely issue with the branch is on me. It had been wired at least once several years ago. Then I come along and bend it one way, then a year later re-wire and bend it the opposite direction. Probably pushed the tissue too far.
    That said, I checked in the poly-tunnel today and that branch is popping buds, so there's hope!
    I'm going to let the branch grow hopefully strong again...

    Cotoneaster is such a fun species to work with. They grow like stink, and take a bend fairly easily, too! That is a very impressive trunk, I hope the deadwood gives you a good few years of pleasure - the pads are developing nicely!

    I like the dead wood look. People are so picky about bonsai. I think there’s a lot of personal aesthetic preference to be manifested through bonsai. I think people criticize qualities of the plant that others may never notice if they looked at the tree every day.

    Nice video Darren, awesome tree! I wonder if the bottom branch is weakening for no other reason than being overshadowed by the extreme vigor of the rest on top. If it survives, I'd suggest experimenting with not letting the rest grow as much relative to the bottom branch. That or maybe too much water or too little water, too much light or too little light, wind from the west or the east, a root related issue or not, maybe an insect or a fungus or none, etc... you know the usual causes of problems in bonsai.

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  Před rokem +1

      Thanks mate. I have to take responsibility - top of the list is me bending it one way, then the other way a year later. you're right, I'm definitely going to let that branch rock out though and hold the rest back. The branch is popping buds so fingers crossed...

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  Před 10 měsíci

      A cascade has foliage below the bottom of the pot, when foliage is below the top but above the bottom of the pot, in English we call it semi-cascade. I would say this tree is semi-cascade. Thank you

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for watching Terry! It's a two-part penetrating epoxy resin. I think it's essentially epoxy with added solvent such as alcohol, but I'm just guessing. It was recommended on a Mirai video but being in the UK I don't necessarily have access to the same products. Deadwood at soil level is always gonna be trouble....

    Hello again. Nice to see you've been busy. Is it Cotoneaster horisontalis or another type? I had a miniature one (C. minimaflora) but I killed it with kindness, too much water and shade... But we live and learn and kill trees at a high rate, but on the positive side, for each tree that does, you get a new pot 😅.
