Registrace 18. 04. 2008
The National Watch and Clock Museum was officially opened to the public in 1977 with fewer than 1,000 items. Since that time, the collection has increased to over 12,000 items and the museum has undergone several expansion projects. The latest expansion opened in October 1999 and featured an entirely new and redesigned exhibit space, as well as a new two-story addition. Today, the museum is recognized as the largest and most comprehensive horological collection in North America.
The Clocks of William Hickcox | Russ Oechsle
The Clocks of William Hickcox - Case Maker of Watertown, CT and North Bridgewater, NY. Hosted by Cog Counters Chapter 194
Russ details the life and distinctive clocks of case maker Wm. Hickcox of Watertown, CT, and North Bridgewater, NY. In the wooden movement clock era, there were likely hundreds of case makers working in obscurity, and Hickcox surely was one. But a combination of unique style cues and a handful of distinctive clocks made after his migration to upstate New York open a window into his activities and reveal a number of Connecticut “makers” to whom he may have supplied cases.

A beautiful story of a clock community coming together for one another. Nicely told, very nice presentation! Thank you!
Thank you very much!
I love hearing about the passion for conservation and preservation of these historical spots! Very well done, thank you :)
This is so awesome!
love this.
You should have told the varning for the main spring release at the beginning of the demonstration. I got scared and had no pictures to help me put it back together!
How cool it is! Just have no words
I learned soooooo many things during this series of classes, Ken. I will watch many more times I am sure!
Really helpful in assisting me in refining my cleaning techniques. I appreciate your careful teaching about the main spring.
Ken, thank you for a really good lesson. You have taught me some very helpful vocabulary (wheels not gears!) and I look forward to the rest of this series of videos.
Superb engineering and craftsmanship. Love it
Nice video! Others recommend using grease on sliding surfaces (pallets, clutch, etc.). What are the advantages or disadvantages to oil versus grease?
This was amazing Ken thankyou for this. I'm now off on a venture to learn how to set the beat on a wall clock I recently acquired. I also discovered that there's a clock repair shop in my town, because I'm a retiree and have lots of "time" on my hands (pun intended) I'm going to see if they have an apprentice/volunteer opportunity rather than me spending thousands of dollars on tools to support a new hobby....Thanks again Bill (not sure why my profile name doesn't appear)
Thank you!! What a great way to teach children about mechanical clocks. They watch them over and over.
Another excellent presentation.
Since I am essentially alone in western Virginia as far as being able to get with other clock repair amateurs, these videos are of great value to me. Thanks, Ken. Bill Willey
Keep 'Em Coming, Ken. I am sure you have lots of extra time to make these.😎 Bill Willey
4th in an excellent series by Ken DeLucca.
I learned that I havent been putting enough oil on the springs.
Thank you for this video. It was indeed possible to get absorbed in the process. I too think some commentary would be helpful. It could be a voice-over added in post-production, in fact that might be the best approach. Watching a second time, everything fit together better. I was surprised not to see any flux used in the soldering steps. Was that off-camera? Did I just miss it both times? Is there a reason not to use flux? Another question was why do so much fitting using a hand graver? Very skillful, but without explanation it would seem that mounting the tool in the lathe carriage would ensure a true surface. And, again, thanks to NAWCC for producing this and the other videos I've found. I'm a member and I do appreciate them.
"A Clock for a King" sounds like a fascinating book! Do you have the author's name?
Gongs can be adjusted with damping. It’s that nawccing sound that gets me 😏
Excellent tutorial which I enjoy viewing even though I have been repairing clocks for over 30 years. Always enjoy seeing and learning from other repairer's their techniques. As a long distance member of the NAWCC for almost 30 years with no chapters in my region to share my interest, this type of medium such as You Tube is ideal for newbies and other members. I hope to see more of these in the future and encourage you to also advertise the benifits of NAWCC membership to new viewers with each You Tube video you publish. So as they say - Like, Subscribe and Join. Best wishes from country South Australia.
Many thanks for the great comments and glad that you enjoyed the video. More to follow!
Fantastic educational videos gentleman! I always enjoy being refreshed and seeing individuals small but different techniques. Please keep going with these!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great information Please keep going with these videos. I have done around 20 to thirty clocks and love to learn more
More to come!
The fucking gong ringing is scary as shit sounding
I would like to see part 2
Neat. Was the same process used to engrave a large pendulum like on grandfather clocks?
Who knew that George Handel dreamed the Messiah composition during a low point in his life? Talk about timely.
Thank you for the video, Ken! Again, it was very nice to meet you and Rory at the AWCI Symposium. I look forward to seeing more of NAWCC's videos!
Thanks Ken, brings back memories of last February. Hope all is well.
Very good video on service. I am bit confused seeing packing tape used on historic objects to hold tags in a museum. The conservators I know would reprimand me if I did that with any tape.
Hi Brian, Thanks for the comment raising concern over the use of tape to label the cases. These clocks are used for training students at the School of Horology and are not part of the museum collection. Hope this help s to clarify.
Really helpful. Thanks, and looking forward to more!
Awesome!
When can I see part 2?
Wonderful! Thank you!
I’ve always wanted to see one of these clocks in real life. Ever since I read Nevil Shute’s book “The Trustee from the Toolroom. It’s beautiful. Thanks,
The opposite for me, knowing the clock I had to read Nevil Shute's book!
I loved it all...thanks.🎉❤
What is the difference between the arrangement of wheels in the mechanism of clock or watch with sub second hand and clock or watch with centre second (thin and long second hand pivoted co-auxial with hour and minute hand)?
Is the motion work direct part of going train or connected to the going train in this clock?
This is truly amazing. Excellent presentation. Thank you so much for your amazing effort!
