Vlog 10. Moving To England From Australia | Escape To The City For The Weekend
I was looking for something to do this weekend, when I opened up IG I was reminded about a photography show in the city. Since I had nothing else on I thought why not so I booked a night and headed in the next day to help out where I could. It was nice going into the city to stay for a change and it just made this whole moving adventure feel so much more realistic and it also allowed me to test out a few things.
Since making this video I have joined Wise Money affiliated program, if you like what I said and you'd like to use the same thing on your next adventure away use this link so they know you have come from my recommendation and I am able to get paid and build up a report with them wise.prf.hn/l/55MMb8o It really is simple and very easy to get started and be on your way.

    what to do with the dry cabinets if no current? do i need to unplug and put silica gels?

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto Před 3 dny

      I’ve not had this problem before, perhaps there’s a fuse which has blown. I don’t think you need to replace the drying out unit. If you can’t get it working again even after talking with the manufacturer you could always use silica gel packs, pelican sells them in metal cases and when they are no longer effective you put them in the oven for 20 minutes for them to become good again.

    Maybe you had a reason to sell fast, but if you want a fair price never sell to a dealer.. should always try selling private first, if you want it gone fast list it as cheapest among others in its condition, would still likely get thousands more than the dealer will offer. Dealers where you go if times running out and your cars not getting any interest even at lowest price in market. Even then, I'd offer it to a mate for what the dealer is offering me, if they got the spare time, its likely they'll make a few thousand selling it on, the worst case is they sell it to the dealer and get their cash back.

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto Před 4 dny

      Yep I just needed it gone to be honest so I can focus on other things I need to tackle for my move, the site I used said it would fight for the best price around and it would compete with selling my car privately. When I agreed to their terms and conditions I also agreed that if I left I would have to pay an exit fee basically which wasn't cheap. I did think about selling it privately but lately even selling camping and camera gear this has proven to be a hassle for me. At least is is gone and I don't have to worry, it would have been nice to get more for it. I still have some things I didn't sell with it so that will go on eBay or the local classifieds :)

    Just picked up a low shutter count( 7k) 5D mark IV with battery grip for €1500, immaculate condition, lost my photography mojo about 10yrs ago & have struggled to reignite my passion, had a 40D back then with a selection of EF & EFS lenses so I'm hitting the ground running, optical viewfinder is a must for me & the mark IV is a super.

      That is an awesome deal you picked up there! Photography is hard and sometimes you need to take a break from it for a while, I am glad for you that your creative flame is back and you'll be back at it stronger than ever before. In a recent video I made, I said I have to sell my canon setup and my 5D was apart of that. Oddly I couldn't let it go for the price people offered me for it so I have kept it, I have been thinking what would I buy if I sold it on or traded it in for something else and I can't think of anything. This camera does everything for me and as you say an optical viewfinder is a must for you and it is also for me. 8 years on and the camera still rocks today!

      @SimonPhillipsPhoto Před 4 dny

      Damn that is a brutal hit! Seems we have a common connection to our cars, they really do have a soul. Most people just think of it as a metal box with an engine to get them from A to B. I purchased my car back in 2017 for $10,500au so selling it for $2,500au was a bit of a hit, At least I got years of use out of it and had some good experiences with it. I wouldn't buy another one as now they are getting to a point they are likely to fail on some major parts.

      @StephanKempchen haha that’s all good my friend. There’s so much to do, I’ve just sold my car late last week and most of my stuff is packed away now. What I’d recommend is one that is wide and shorter in length as you can fill this up better as it sits more flat, the narrower longer ones tend to end up like a tube. The pocket it sits In doesn’t come out much once you’ve got your camera gear inside the main compartment. Just thinking about mine it could have been about 15x30cm perhaps.

  • @paramounttechnicalconsulti5219

    Mirrorless is, in my opinion, a bit of a shill - make you buy a new camera that is cheaper to make for a higher price. "Mirrorless has amazing autofocus, and electronic shutter that gets you a zillion frames a second!" - They could have put the the same tech into a DSLR; 99% is software and sensor and has nothing to do with the mirror.

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto Před 14 dny

      I do agree with you partly on that front, dslr cameras are not that different to a mirrorless and there's perks to both systems. With the bust rate they could do that with a dslr but just use mirror lockup and shoot in live view. DSLR cameras haven't been updated in years now so it isn't fair for people to compare specs and features on a system that isn't being improved over time. I always found the auto focus to be accurate and fast on my dslr cameras but having a read out off of the sensor will often be better.

    • @paramounttechnicalconsulti5219
      @paramounttechnicalconsulti5219 Před 13 dny

      @@SimonPhillipsPhoto Just curious, is the faster read-out speed somehow inherent to a mirrorless design; all else being equal?

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto Před 13 dny

      @paramounttechnicalconsulti5219 well now they need a faster buffer to transfer the files, some cameras like the R5 have the Cfast card or something similar. But in saying that the 1DX had some pretty expensive cards. I think the high frames per second when using electronic shutter is basically like video but it saves each frame at full resolution. It still can’t do crazy fps with the mechanical shutter. Dslr cameras were limited a bit more due to the mirror and the slap it had. If I got back into sports I would choose a 1DX mark II.

    Whenever I relocate from one area to another, I always feel the blues before leaving - like I'm severing a tie. I guess that it is because my immediate environment, presently at my disposal, will soon no longer be at my disposal anymore - it will be gone. Another thing is that once all the moving preparations are 'locked in' with tickets and reservations, I no longer feel in control of the situation - the itinerary now has control of me. I think everything in life has some kind of cost - nothing comes free. Your new adventure in England, with all its coming excitement, comes at the cost of permanent farewell to Australia. The good news is that the blues vanish once you land in England. However sad you feel right now, two months from now, you will remember as a learning experience - the blues are transitory (a phantom). You must have faith in yourself that you made the correct decision and keep marching forward. I know that you are making the correct move. About two months ago, I mentioned to you how much I liked the Margaret River area, and you were adamant saying that you could not just park there for the rest of your life. You felt sure that something must change. I understood your feelings when you asked folks on your forum to stop reminding you of Australia's enchantments. You have only about two months more of the blues before your adventure begins. We are all behind you and supporting you on this move. You must keep sailing forward - just like Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus. Cheers, Mike in Louisiana

      I think you're onto something there, your comforts around you are changing as you make the transition to somewhere new. I certainly remember thinking about this earlier on in the year, I might have mentioned it knowing I will go through this feeling and emotion... I just didn't realise it would hit me so hard. I found out since I could very likely have ADHD as well as Autism I need to keep busy otherwise my brain starts to wonder and make me feel bad that I am not doing anything which brings on depression at a rapid pace. I know I am happiest when I am actively doing something and planning. It certainly is a risk doing this but I need to do it, you always have to give yourself to a journey and know that failure could happen and most of the time something really good comes from it. Most play it safe and don't go anywhere but those that take on the challenge certainly have a good story to share and also grow as a person. I am sure once I touch down in England on the plane and get off the plane it will hit me but in a good way, I will most likely have a grin on my face and a bounce in my step. It was annoying when people were saying I was making a mistake leaving Australia, but they don't know how I feel. I can already see glimpses of myself living in England, having that space in me filled will be nice and a thing I don't need to find something to fill it as it will topped up and capped off. What is tough at the moment is working out what to do next as I have so many ideas but no idea which one to pick first haha. Money certainly isn't the problem, more time in the day which is. I will need help from the right people I meet to make it work.

    Hey great video. I do have a question. I just saw someone around my town selling an used pocket 2 creator combo for $200, I know its pretty cheap compared to a new one, but its a very niched camera and hard to resell as I have seen. I am thinking that's a steal, was looking for it to start vlogging but you know, limited resources to start. As someone experienced as you are, what questions should I ask the guy who is selling? is there anything I should look for? I mostly concerned of course the body of the camera and he confirmed its good! but should I be worried about battery? or anything else? can I replace the battery if its bad?

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto Před 24 dny

      That’s a great bargain for it! The battery in the main unit can’t be replaced unless you send it off to DJI to replace but that will cost you. The battery grip that also has the mic transmitter in it can be replaced easily by buying a new part. Make sure the gimbal works smoothly and the mic still powers up and has about 320 minutes of charge when full. It really is a simple setup and not to much that can go wrong. Thank you as well! I’m glad you found it useful 🙂

I'd forgotten what this old beastie could do. Thanks for the video. When I first bought it, compared to all the other people who were buying point and shooters, this camera seemed huge. Now, those old "P & S" things are long gone, people have their phones now, YAWN! This is a great trip down memory lane. Shows what can be done with vintage digital.

    Good presentation in my opinion. I've had this models since 2017 and agree it's great value and a mid range bag. I use mine less than I expected as I more and more often need to bring a laptop and there simply isn't room for the 16" I use for work. It's room for a Surface Go or pad. I really "hate" fastening a tripod like you did and never bring one that need to stick out below the pack. Works fine with smaller travel tripods that will fit in a side pocket though.

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto Před měsícem

      @frstesiste7670 It really is a nice bag and great value. It is a shame that the front of the bag just didn't have a bit more height and width to the pack then I think it would be able to fit a laptop in the front quite easily. Yeah with the way I had my tripod it certainly isn't ideal, thankfully I have since purchased a smaller one and it is more manageable. I have certainly tried a small travel tripod in the side pocket and it fits in nicely and doesn't sit very high once in the pocket.

    Glad to see that you have the Fuji camera back. What did Fuji say went wrong? Did you get a new motherboard? When I visited England, I stayed in some bed-and-breakfast accommodations to save money. Maybe an option for you? You could hire a storage unit to expand your options. Good luck with selling the equipment. Gotta do what we gotta do. Cheers, Mike from Louisiana

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto Před měsícem

      I am so glad to have it back, I love it even more now. Fuji didn't say really what they done, they gave a part number but no luck working out what it is. What I do know is I have a new shutter, also there was a mark on the sensor and that has gone. I reckon it must have been a new main board and who knows maybe new internals as well. I have had a look into those places and they are a little cheaper but I like to have my own space, also with a B&B you can't stay around the place during the day. I have signed up to booking dot com where I will be able to find some other places to stay before I find a rental. Having a storage unit could work but I need a lot of my stuff so it wouldn't be cost effective, with my house I am looking at places with a garage for extra storage space. I managed to sell all my lenses now. Just my 5D remains but the sales prices for those really vary week to week, what I will do is bring it with me back to England in the container and sell it over there instead, maybe even do a trade in deal and get myself another Fujifilm XT4 or XT3.

    • @Mike_in_Louisiana
      @Mike_in_Louisiana Před měsícem

      @SimonPhillipsPhoto Ideally, a single room or attic that someone is renting would buy you time - time to shop around for a house (so you can be very choosy). Sometimes, when I relocated, I was forced to rush into the first accommodation available. I later saw a better deal, but unfortunately, I had already rushed into a rental lease. When you relocate, things don't always fall into order correctly. I hope that they do for you in England. However, if you do stumble across an accommodation that buys you time - it can only work in your favor. Cheers, Mike in Louisiana

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto Před měsícem

      @user-mu2cp5dv7r I shouldn't need to worry about buying time as my stuff shouldn't arrive in England until mid December time, I am hoping to take about a month to find a place and move in. I will basically get my stuff taken away a week prior to leaving, I am doing this to make sure I make use of that time so I would save costs on storage. For the past few months I have been looking at rentals and gauging more of what I would like and also seeing what the market is doing, also I am able to see what properties just are not shifting. Currently I am looking at a rental around the 900-1200 pounds per month mark and that will get me something nice that I can also use to save money in other areas, which is win win in my books.

      Thank you Mel! It really was a tough one to make and one I have been thinking about for a while now. I have managed to sell all my lenses which was good, I did loose money on those but not to much which is good. Selling the 5D is proving to be a bit more tricky. I think this will come with me to England and I will sell it over there to a company I am affiliated with. I might even go over to Fujifilm all together as I do like their stuff, a 70-300mm lens would be nice as it is lightweight yet gives me a nice amount of reach. Also given my bad back I think the fuji is a great compromise, I am surprised by the image quality of that. Also for most of what I am doing now it will be perfect. I'll keep some of my accessories for the 5D4 just in case I end up getting one later on or a 1DX mark II would be nice 🙂

      I really understand where you are coming from as I was thinking a lot about what I wanted from a small lightweight yet easy setup. I do find the action cameras are a touch to wide and the image quality isn't as good as the pocket 2, plus you can't have such a simple wireless mic setup. I have heard mixed reviews on the insta ace pro, I found this out after I was so close to buying one.
