Blair Athol 12 and the distillery tour

After 3 days in Edinburgh we are on the road again heading to the central Highlands to see more of that spectacular Scottish scenery and the history. We have many more distilleries, castles and the culture to experience in the next three weeks. We will be heading up to the Pitlochry area where 3 distilleries are located, Aberfeldy, Edradour and Blair Athol. You also have Blair Castle, Castle Menzies, Taymouth Castle and the ruins of Black Castle in this area.
We had originally planned back in Canada to tour the Edradour distillery but the visitor center is shut down for the year. I had got some advice from a fellow Islander who knows whisky distilleries and knows Scotland. He highly recommended touring the Blair Athol distillery in Pitlochry. He convinced me enough that I was immediately researching it and soon after had it booked along with the other tours planned. I had never tried their whisky nor did I no much about the distillery other than it's location. The village of Blair Atholl and Pitlochry kept popping up when I was doing research in the highlands for this channel but the Blair Athol distillery is not located in Blair Atholl. It's located in Pitlochry. Now I did not make a spelling mistake on the two different spellings because one 'L' is the distillery spelling and two 'L' s are the village spelling.
Well what about the whisky? 99% of the Blair Athol spirit goes into blends like "Bells". That leaves 1%
for single malts. The 43% abv "Twelve" is the official Diageo "Flora & Fauna" bottling that is not as easy to get in Canada as over in the UK. There are some higher strength and cask strength bottlings that are special releases from the distillery. I have brought a couple of those samples back to Canada along with the "Twelve". That's enough info; let's get into the video. Enjoy the video. Slàinte Mhath

      I think they've got a player with this one. It's a tough business for these new distilleries to wait for ten years because they still have to deal with their overhead and payroll. Unless they have a Gin still it's going to be non age statements. Now that they have the ten they will have to follow up with a twelve. Shelter Point distillery here on Vancouver Island just came out with their first twelve and I just finished a review on it. Slàinte Mhath

    You've provided good information here. So far, I've only tried the standard GlenAllachie 12 and a Spec's (Texas) retailer exclusive 12yo single cask bottled at full strength. IMHO the standard 12 was fine but not really exceptional, whereas the the cask strength 12 was very good, showing evidence that they used a quality cask to mature the spirit. However, with both examples I couldn't really find a distinctive flavor or aroma note from the distillate itself, making the overall taste just a bit generic. I hope to try their standard 15yo soon to see what a little more age does for this whisky.

      Thanks for the response. I have not drank a lot Japanese whisky because it was already highly priced with very few age statements when I was getting into it. I became a little biased because I could buy an affordable better quality Scotch for less. I did the math and I am on a Whisky budget. I do have some Nikkas because they haven't gone through the roof yet and a few Yamazaki and Hibiki whiskies. I have a couple 12 year olds of what some reviewers call the "Phantom Kurayochi Distillery" whiskies. Aside from being accused as being fake Japanese whiskies, they are non chill filtered and natural color and not that bad but what Scottish distillery did they come from? Slàinte Mhaith.

I like my Tyrconnell 15 Madeira and 16 Oloroso-Moscotel cask from Cooley Distillery as well but I don't know if you can get it anymore. My son was going to buy me the 21 Red Breast as a gift (very expensive) so I told him I would prefer him to buy me the rare Irishman 17 cask strength single malt, still affordable (by Bernard and Rosemary Walsh of Walsh Whiskey). I believe it is from Bushmills. I have read some great reviews on it. I am waiting for a special occasion because it still has the lid on it. Tempting. Thanks for the interest and the reply. Both the Single Malt 46% and the CS are excellent choices. I also have the Ten and the Twelve that have that Shelter Point signature taste. These are whiskies matured in Jack Daniels Bourbon Barrels and because of the quality of the barley used (grown next door to the distillery) they have a sweet malty barley sugar taste to their whiskies. They don't need to be finished in Sherry. Slàinte Mhath

Most of us have something hidden away and I have a 24 year old Independent bottling of Glenlivet that's been around for a few years. I haven't popped the cork. Waiting for that special moment........Sláinte

    Just discovered your channel. From Winnipeg and nice to learn about Canadian Single Malts. Own a few Shelter Point expressions but distribution in MB is not great.

      Thanks for watching and I certainly agree with you. I think even with the awards they have won, they are still a well kept secret. I have turned people on to the brand in the UK and Scotland and they say they can't find it on the shelves so distribution is still a challenge for the Canadian Single Malts.

    Fascinating history to this distillery! I knew a bit but I am enjoying having so much filled in for me. I have only ever had the JW Green label and the Blue. I am in Vancouver so I am looking at a really hefty price before tax and if I was spending so much I know I would opt for a single malt, Speyside or peated which I really love a lot. The Green is fairly reasonably priced for a 15 year old blended scotch and I don't mind it at all! I don't have it a lot but I enjoy a dram here and there, day twice a month! I love it that the ABV is at 43% in the lovely Green label! Was it the Gold label that you thoughts you might taste some Lagavulin? It's my favourite distillery. Lagavulin 16 was my gateway scotch into peated scotch! I was actually buying a bottle of Ardbeg Ten this evening and I noticed the 18 for the first time and it was about $166.00. Scotch prices are going insane! Terrific knowledge Noel! I really appreciate your work! Terrific exploration! Cheers! P.S. Macaloney's spirits are really interesting!!

    Noel I enjoyed this review so much and I learned a lot. I appreciate your thoughts very much. This is a very interesting expression! I will definitely seek out the three blended scotch expressions in this amazing series from Dewar's! The nosing and palette sound lovely! You know your whisky! Cheers!

    Great review. The only time I buy a Walker is , for fun, to vatt and add a core malt to it (such as Cardhu, Talisker, Cragganmore...) to boost its malt content to exceed 60% and teh abv above 43%

    It is crazy how expensive these bottles are in BC. In California, Costco caries green label for $48 ($43 when on sale) and black label for $49 ($45 when on sale) for 1.75L. Double Black for $31, Blue Label for $180

      Thanks for the interest. It is so painful when I know I am paying such a high price more than most places around the world and a lot of it is taxes. Alberta is a lot cheaper than BC as well. Unfortunately we also have the BCL which have there own store and are controlling what the private stores can bring in. That's a whole other can of worms. Cheers

    • @noelsworldofwhisky8208
      @noelsworldofwhisky8208 Před 5 měsíci

      The BCLCB not only have a cash cow with their stores but also control the tap to their competition, the private stores. I wonder how that affects pricing?

    • @MrEgyPete
      @MrEgyPete Před 5 měsíci

      @@noelsworldofwhisky8208 that’s true. You can always see the how much they make based on the prices in Alberta. I always check BSW and Costco in Alberta and the difference is BCLCB’s profit! Whisky suffers the most as their “tax” is based on ABV. The best thing to do here is buying form Duty Free when crossing to US but you are limited to 1 bottle if you will be outside for 48 hours.

    P.S one for you too look out for in 24 the Meikle Toir 5yr / 50% Peated Speyside from Glenallachie I think Billy did a good job with that one, a few different versions around so you get a choice of cask influence.

    Best sherry cask i ever tasted was brugse whisky company's belgium' rogia canasta sherry cask'. Sold out in 13 seconds together with the' rogia champagne cask'. If you can find them then try it Glenmorangie malaga was also not to bad in line of the glenmorangie

      Thanks for the tip. You were lucky if it sold out in 13 seconds. Those ones you usually stand in long line ups (early in the morning). I have seen the Bruges Whiskies before because a friend introduced me; if I remember rightly, a wine finished bottling, but have not run into the Rogia Canasta Sherry cask.

      Hi Ironman. Thanks for viewing. Boy, I would sure like to see that here. The BCLB have a monopoly here and is like a giant cartel. They make it difficult for the smaller stores to bring in certain spirits that they would have no problem selling. They have a monopoly on the pricing as well.
