This is another whiskey that I could call a really old friend. Yes, this is going way back to the mid seventies. But I will have to get back to you on that story later.
I tried not to eat up too much of your time on the new Causeway distillery but it wasn't easy. It is just such a smart lay out without the extravagance of Macallan's behemoth distillery nor did they spend a couple hundred million. It was designed with many things thought out but remember this is a really old distillery so they have had lots of time to think about how to improve things; the green approach to energy with 30% less consumption, worker safety, aesthetics, customer visitor experience and for expansion in the future. The mother company, American Proximo Spirits, invested 37 million pounds in the 39,000 sq ft facility that will double the brand’s production. They were planning on spending 60 million pounds overall in Bushmills over the 5 year period. Very few people new about this expansion that took place during Covid and even the local villagers kept it quiet.
What we have to remember about Bushmills is that they have always used malted barley in their Whiskey even during the tough British taxation on barley in the eighteen hundreds. That's when most other distilleries started to add a percentage of corn and other cheaper grains. Today Bushmills is focused on their Single Malts and have 10 year old, 16, 21 and have just launched their 25 and 30 year old Single Malts. These last two whiskies are non chill filtered and 46% ABV.
So now we'll talk about the seventies when I hung out with the College kids and worked in the Oil Business? Old Bushmills Irish whiskey was a go to for most of us, the same as the blended Scotches. We all drank the cheapest Bushmill that we could buy and believe me I didn't know a hoot about malted barley or the fact that they did not add grain alcohol to their whiskies like Jamieson or all those blended Scotches. So as much as Bushmills and Glenfiddich were very different they did have something in common way back in the seventies. They both used malted barley and no grain alcohol was added.
So what about the recently launched Bushmills Twelve Single Malt? They haven't managed to offer us the 46% ABV nor the non chill filtering that is in the recently launched 25 and 30 year old but it is a natural color. I guess it's just a matter of time because that is the trend now with all the new distilleries starting up around the world. We are seeing more and more distilleries now offering non chill filtering and higher ABV in their bottlings (or at least some or their presentations).
But what is important now is to see what the Bushmill 12 Single Malt Irish Whiskey can deliver in a 40% ABV chill filtered bottling. Enjoy the review.
