This is a distillery that claims to be "the oldest working distillery in Scotland" along with several other distilleries so I had make a list in the video of those that could challenge Glenturret on that claim.
Glenturret has done some recent research by digging through ancient records and have found a rental document that dates to 1763 from Sir Patrick Murray of Ochertyre who was a land baron and rented the distillery and lands to a Tennant. The name of the distillery on the document was Thurot, supposedly the old name for Glenturret. It is unusual that you would put a name on an illegal distillery that you're trying to hide from the "Gauger" (Exciseman). We do know and there are records of John Drummond taking out a license in 1818 on Hosh distillery, the Glenturret name at that time until the later license owner, Thomas Stewart changed it in 1875 to Glenturret. Whether or not Glenturret is the oldest distillery in Scotland it is still a real old distillery and this all makes for a colorful story for the tour guides.
The distillery went through numerous hands until the experienced Mitchel Brothers had it during very difficult economic times including the First World War and Prohibition. They were forced to shut it down and dismantle it in the early twenties. It fell silent with it's dilapidated buildings rotting away for over 30 years when the experienced whisky man, James Fairlie came to the rescue. He was able to get 2 stills, a mashtun and other equipment from Tullibardine that was at that time being refitted.
It was sold to Remy Cointreau in 1981 and then to Highland Distillers in 1990 which became Edrington, the owners of Macallan and Highland Park. In 2002 Edrington built a Disney Style tourist center called the Famous Grouse Experience, the brand and blend that Glenturret whisky went into.
It finally changed ownership in 2018 to the present day to the luxury company, Lalique Group and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss who brought the Iconic Macallan Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno on board. They no longer have to supply whisky to the blend "The Famous Grouse", so we are seeing numerous integrity bottlings with age statements that are finally hitting the shelf.
I shouldn't finish this without telling the other colorful story on "Towser the Mouser" but that is something you can watch on the video. Remember we are reviewing the Glenturret 12 in case we all have lost track. And remember to PLEASE GIVE US A LIKE if you enjoyed the review and NEW SUBSCRIBERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME TO THIS CHANNEL.
