Tutorial: FIREPLACE MAKEOVER! Cleaning and Refreshing a stone fireplace DIY
In this video I will show you how I refreshed an old stone fireplace, by cleaning and then toning it.
To clean: vacuum for top to bottom
The apply a soapy mixture to each section starting at the top of the fireplace, and using a brush to clean the dirt and soot that had accumulated over the years. After cleaning I rinsed well either clear water, again working from top to bottom.. then allowing the fireplace to dry completely.
To tone the mortar, hearty and mantle, and just a few spots on the stone… I use a water based opaque concrete stain that I had tinted to four neutral colors. I applied a cream color to the mortar, and I bet brushed the heart and mantle using various colors to bring the look back to nearly new looking!

@@wallacehenryhartley1209 yes! You may have your fill twice. Let the first fill dry then see if there is any shrink and if so, fill a bit more!

Try to put layer of ordinary PVA and on the top of wet glue very delicately layer of paint . Very good result, much better than mod podge crackle. Thank you for sharing now I know what not to buy. Very informative and truthful review, thank you so much 😅

I think this is slightly more advanced, but having said that, taken step by step,it is doable and I encourage you to give it a go! Refer often to images of rabbits to get the head shape and feature placement as accurate as possible 🩵🩵🩵

I've tried this with chalk paint and it didn't work very well at all. Very few cracks. And after waiting a full 24 hours to seal with wax, it bubbled and pulled the paint off. What did i do wrong. Any help appreciated
I think using chalk paint must have been the problem. Chalk paint is pretty strong stuff and,additionally there maybe there was chemical reaction. I wish I had better insight for you, but I’ve never used chalk paint to try to crackle.
@@artinaroundwithmindy i just reread the instructions today and it tells you to use chalk paint 😂 so i guess that's not it
Sorry I’m not sure what the problem is then! I to know that crackle seems to have a mind of its own! 😂
@@artinaroundwithmindy well thank you for responding. I got it to crackel. The only thing i did different was to gently shake up the crackel medium and applied it pretty thick. Kinda crazy because it don't tell you to mix at all in the instructions. I noticed it still seems tacky after a full day of drying time so im just going to let it cure for a few days before i try waxing and hope the paint doesnt pull up
Btw: regular white school glue works great

Now... I'm all for experimenting and I can only appreciate you showing how you went about it. BUTT... from the start, you seem to have done almost the exact opposite of what it says on the bottle. Which reads: [Apply a thin even coat in one direction with even strokes. Do not apply a second coat. Avoid over-brushing. Let dry completely 1 hour. Cracking shows when the medium is dry. [...] Full cure time 4 weeks.]
Ah! Fair enough! I notoriously don’t follow directions well and work intuitively. During this process is when I discovered that there was a difference between crackle medium, which I have lots of experience with, and a medium that crackles! So yes, it was a video of discovery! 😁

Yep it’s not hard to fix at all, but some clays crack a lot more than others!
