Creating Faux Birch using Air Dry Clay -TUTORIAL

In this full length tutorial, I show you how I created faux birch on a plain glass vase, using Air Dry Clay, Paint and a lot of techniques I have learned and honed through the years as an artist and professional decorative painter.
I used DAS air dry clay, gesso, glue, lots of carving tools, acrylic paint, Modern Masters Platinum Series Tintable Glaze,and a badger softening brush for to create this classic finish!

When you said, “usually I have (the surface covered by) glaze when I do this. I wasn’t sure if this was going to work but it did.” my heart skipped a beat. I was thinking about how much time you had spent on the project previous to that last step. I don’t think I would have taken the chance.
Then I remembered a conversation I had with my 22 year old daughter 2 days ago. I’ve been teaching her how to cook beyond the basics. For me this is an art. For her it’s still science.
She was amazed that I didn’t refer back to the recipe for each step and added additional spices. I told her that she would get there one day with practice. There are things I cook so often that I no longer have to even crack the book open.
You’re like that with your visual arts. You know and have practiced the basic techniques so long that you knew how to rescue your piece if the speckling didn’t work out exactly as planned. That’s the confidence of a master.
I watch these videos and wish my hands would work like that. I’m inspired to use the less than 1% talent I have and practice until I can get the pictures and sculptures out of my head and into reality.
