Try first using liquid dishwashing soap. If that doesn't work, try using a kitchen vacuum sealer & place sealed bag in the freezer. Then try to quickly install. be careful if using any kind of lubricant as it may break down the seal.

I just came back from Home Depot, they do not have that thick rubber, only thin one, not sure if that works.

Thanks for posting this! One thing I noticed in the instructions that Kohler publishes with the official replacement part, they suggest that you remove the red flapper itself from the valve assembly while you are installing it into the tank. That probably makes it easier to secure, since you don't have to worry about crushing the flapper while compressing the gasket and rotating the assembly.

The lube is very important. Turning the flush valve with the new seal is very difficult to press down and turn. You should have shown That step instead of cutting back to it after it was installed.

Better to take off the flapper when installing. Super easy to remove and reinstall and it won’t be in the way.
