Pipistrel Virus SW Dead stick landing exercise on military airbase
Every year the Belgian Ultralight Federation (BULMF) organizes a Safety Day on an Air Force facility. Different safety related topics are covered during lectures and training. One training stands out: pilots get a chance to practice engine out landings, with or without flight instructor. The (very) long runway boosts confidence to dare to stop the prop and glide your way in.
This video shows three engine out landings in my Virus SW F-JTRW. Congratulations to BULMF for organizing and Beauvechain Belgian Air Force base for hosting this wonderful event.

What a joy to be flying again after such a rainy fall. The darkest days of the year are finally behind us. Winter is mild here in Belgium, and snowy days are becoming rare. All the more fun when snow and sun work together. It makes for beautiful flights and ditto videos.Wide spaces turn out even wider when covered in white. And low sunlight makes slight slopes in the landscape seem like waves. ...

      @filiplowette7003 Před 5 měsíci

      Merci pour la question, Katia. Les trajets plutôt courts se font aux alentours de 3000ft. Dans ce cas les paramètres sont 4900 tours et 25MAP. Les longs trajets étaient la plupart vers 6000ft, 4900 tours et 22MAP. Sur la totalité du voyage la vitesse moyenne sol n’a pas atteint les 200kmh à cause de vents de face fréquents. Normalement ces paramètres donnent 210kmh GS. C’est la combinaison de l’hélice à pas variable, le fuselage aérodynamique et l’aile tres efficace (avec des flaperons -5° au dessus de 150kmh) qui expliquent la consommation superbe.

    Zou je kunnen landen zonder airbrakes ? Niet in Avernas natuurlijk, maar hoeveel meter zou je nodig hebben zonder de airbrakes ?

    • @filiplowette7003
      @filiplowette7003 Před 7 měsíci

      Dank je wel voor je vraag. Even wat uitleg. De airbrakes remmen niet echt af. Spoilers is een betere benaming, omdat ze lift wegnemen. Ze worden ingebouwd in vliegtuigen met een hoog glijgetal (1:17 bij de Virus SW).Daardoor verandert de daalhoek (je zakt dus sneller) terwijl de snelheid constant blijft, bvb in final. Op een kort terrein kan je ook landen zonder spoilers, maar door het hoge glijgetal zal je al van erg ver erg laag moeten aanvliegen, want hij blijft maar zweven. De spoilers gebruik is vooral bij het afronden. Daardoor wordt veel lift ( die in grond effect maar blijft bestaan) van de vleugel weggenomen en krijgt het toestel niet de kans om weer op te springen en verder te vliegen. Dat is het belangrijkste hulpmiddel om met een toestel als dit op een kort terrein te landen. Kijk ook even naar de video ‘dead stick landing on BULMF safety day 2021’ . Daar zie je goed hoe lang de Virus SW in grond effect blijft zweven en hoeveel afstand hij daarbij aflegt.

      @DirkHav Před 7 měsíci

      Ik heb nog maar sinds afgelopen zomer mijn brevet en vlieg nu in Goetsenhoven met een Storch OO-F98, bij jullie bekend als lestoestel. Ik ben dus nog altijd heel alert voor een go around. Voor mij zou het moeilijk zijn om met mijn rechterhand de spoilers te bedienen (net op het moment dat je al boven de runway zweeft) en dan nog op tijd aan mijn gashendel te duwen voor een go around. @@filiplowette7003

Even when you empty the SD card before every flight, file space may not be available for the fast writing required in 5.7K 30fps. Sometimes it recorder for even just 9 minutes and stopped for no apparent reason. So what I do since that is also reformat my card before every flight. F-JTRW has a Rotax 912 UL 80hp engine and 160 liters long range tanks (it made a trip around the world in 2012-13; check Wings for Science for videos). Your engine is probably a 912 ULS 100hp. Your engine manual is the best source for settings. Two examples of settings flying to Norway last week: 5000ft, 23in MAP, 5000RPM 11.5 lph and 226kph TAS. And: FL90, 19.7in MAP, 4800RPM 12lph and 207kph TAS. I will post videos about this Norway trip in the coming weeks. Now about range: this obviously depends on your engine settings and available fuel. You will see that in this configuration there is easily 10 hours endurance and 2000km range. But I’m not planning to sit still for so long ;) Happy landings!

      @@filiplowette7003 I am 1m83 and fit quite tight, for sure you have no extra room to add cushion. By the way, about flaps in circuit, what are you setting for initial, base and final ? Speeds ? Thanks !!

      @@andresmondolo4299 Lucky for you that you are not very tall ;) My flap settings obviously related to our short field (currently 399m). So here is what I learned from others and from my own experience. Reduce speed at the latest 2 min before arriving in the vicinity of the airfield: 3500 RPM, prop fully fine, RPM will go up, increase pitch and trim for 125kmh and set RPM accordingly (mostly around 4100RPM = 125kmh). Enter the circuit and middle of downwind remain at 125kmh. At the latest in base: flaps 1 and 115 to 110kmh and trim. Right after turning final: flaps 2 and trim for 100kmh max (usually 90 is better). As you will know, letting the stick move forward even a tiny little bit will result in speed increase immediately. In strong turbulence or strong cross wind, I avoid using flaps 2 so I keep enough aileron activity foor sudden corrections. In strong head winds that are nicely in the runway axis, I set flaps 1 (and even 0 if more that 40kmh). On longer runways I use the same speed in final, just out of habit. Does this correspond with what you do?

      @@filiplowette7003 Hi Filip, thank you for the class !. I have a very wide and long runway at SAZY, San Martin de los Andes, Argentina, but I like to land as it is short and small. I am comfortable entering circuit at 80kt, then 70kt and Flap1 on DW, slowering to 60kt and turn base, reduce to 55kt on base and set Fp2, keep in between 51 and 53kt, turn final and keep 50kt up to the flare. I am new, have just 30 hrs on the plane, that is why I prefer not to change anything on final. I Know is better to Flap2 in final, will try it next week. Have a nice weekend !

    Beautiful trip. Thanks for uploading. Do you find the Virus can achieve a steady 130 knots?

    • @ontdekjeeigenfrequentie2694
      @ontdekjeeigenfrequentie2694 Před rokem

      Thanks for the complement. The 100hp Virus can easily achieve 130kts since its 75% cruise is 145kts. Mine is a 80hp where 130kts is 75% cruise. I usually fly a little slower. In the Brescia via Simplon video you will see I had a 218kmh (118kts) average. To achieve that on such a long trip with different altitudes and wind conditions, you need to be at a 125kts in level flight most of the time. czcams.com/video/nIIT3evZDNc/video.html. Enjoy my other videos as well!

    What was the wind in the mountains causing turbulence?

    • @filiplowette7003
      @filiplowette7003 Před rokem

      Hello Sebastien, it was a westerly wind and if I remember correctly is was about 30-40kmh. So overhead Simplon the wind was coming from the higher mountains on right with downdrafts and updrafts alternating quickly. It was the logical combination of wind, terrain and cumulus clouds that made the crossing bumpy. The superb stabilisation of the camera makes the passage seem much smoother than it was. Does that answer your question?

      For a first time crossing I recommend what others recommended me: choose a GAFOR VFR route with a low mountain pass such as Brenner (see my other videos for the northbound and southbound Brenner route) and pick a calm early morning. There are many days where there is much less wind in the mountains than in the plains. I took three times three days mountain flying courses before I felt comfortable trying a crossing on my own. Good luck!

      Dag Ron, normaal vlieg ik 60% power 220km/u IAS, wat natuurlijk kan veranderen owv de wind. De motor in de F-JTRW is een 80pk, iets minder snel dan de 100pk, maar wel veel zuiniger. Een vlucht van 4u naar Brescia (Italië, zie andere video) 218km/u en goed 50liter verbruikt. Ideaal om lange afstanden te doen. Vlieg je zelf ook? Groeten, Filip.
