    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman Před dnem

      That’s an awesome question! Like many things, it depends on what you’re using it for but a dowel joint will likely be your strongest because of the material cross section at the joint. I use dominoes for many of my joints which is a combination of a dowel and biscuit.

      Absolutely, I intended it for strength but you know 😂 on a positive note, the OSB sheeting has kept it rigid enough not to sag.

    I'm a newbie I've done some board glueups with stock up to 2 meters. I was wondering if doing a glueups such as the one you illustrate, which features boards touching end grain to endgrain would result in trouble in terms of wood movement. Is it safe?

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman Před 6 dny

      Thanks for the question and welcome! I’m still a newbie in a lot of ways, always learning. It’s possible that there will be expansion and contraction issues but most wood movement is perpendicular to the grain direction so I’d be more concerned about how the bread boards at the end are attached than the end to end boards in the middle. JKatz Moses has a great write up on wood expansion at the link below: kmtools.com/blogs/news/planning-for-wood-movement

  • @cchemmes-seeseeart3948

    I'm in the middle of installing similar lumber rack orange metal shelves that are welded one piece, 3 shelves/ 4 rack. I had similar concerns of not wanting to install the rack right into the construction wood studs of the shed, so i added extra 2x4 pieces, attached to the studs, & then installed the lag bolts into that extra stud wood pieces. And like this video, I then had second thoughts, that the added short stud pieces were too small, & maybe I should just have them run all the way to the floor. I was trying to solve that, when finding this video. Working with such a lumber rack build, you quickly realize the weight concerns. Some of my wood includes sculpture/ small logs. I quickly realized how massively heavy they are, despite only being about 6" thick; & these will be stuffed elsewhere, despite initial plans....I'm thinking of adding some 'triangles of wood under the rack too, for weight bearing, that will protrude back flat against the wall, running along the studs wood & under the bottom of the rack unit. I'm still wrestling with idea to instead add yet another stud beams under the bottom of the rack, running to the floor, for weight bearing...plus some construction adhesive too between all of the parts. As I'm not an engineer, it leaves you uncertain what will go & what won't. Wood is heavy. For context, I think of kitchen cupboards, & how they hold heavy dishes, within large heavy wood boxes, bolted to the wall with cabinet lag bolts, to help give some perspective. To add shelving across the horizontals, something lighter weight, like netting or chicken wire or plastic sheets might save some weight over OSB.

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman Před 6 dny

      All valid thoughts. It is amazing how heavy lumber is and I’d rather over engineer it some rather than under engineer it.

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman Před 8 dny

      Great question! I did the same thing. It’s not a screw’s off type of securement. Screw the fastener in and then just lift up, it has a clip on the inside that will grab and hold it shut. It’s a slip grip connection

    Hello and thank you for the video. I have purchased the Medium Chicken Tractor plan. I am trying to install the roost but it is not flush on one side despite the measurements being correct and the roost fairly square from corner to corner. I see that you installed your cross braces for the roost after you had the supports in. I don't understand why mine will not fit with all measurements between triangles being correct and the roost being correct. If you can tell me how to correct without taking the roost apart I would be grateful.

    With a tankless air compressor just a block no big barrel the don't use oil those I say you'd get away without a filter but your grease and condensation filter are very underrated yet a must! From whatever condenses or comes through in oil form from your tank. An uneven or unaccounted for factor that's making the paint not bad but maybe it wasn't made up to code. Then this thing will save your life! Mind you I'm talking from the airbrush standpoint so there a bit of condensation or grease is death you don't need more then 35/40psi to make them work but the filters? Truly don't underestimate their use is my opinion oh and I use the Norgren brand they're more top of the line, not cheap but affordable enough! I've had mine for half a lifetime like a good 15 years? Still purrs like a kitten! Plus when I do switch to a more high volume spraygun I simply leave it on there and especially say I've been doing some random low pressure acrylic painting and then I need to throw a coat of enamel over something big. The pressure goes up? Then so does the condensation in the tank plus even without a tank they are noisy but also heat up after a while so the moisture never goes away in a sense ✌️

    The Plug-It cord that comes with the TS55 is a heavier gauge cord and the smaller cords that come with the router, sander’s, etc will Not work,with the TS55. That said, the TS55 cord will work with the other tools. The end that the cord plugs into the saw, has different keying to prevent the smaller cords from being used. Congrats on your new saw, I have had and used all the different models of the TS55 during the last 20 odd years, and the new TS55 released recently is the best one yet, with better adjustments and the new thinner blade makes cleaner cuts. This is super helpful! Bought a router then quickly realized I needed a table (beginner), and I bought this one. Your video will be my go-to for set up, so thank you. I was wondering the height of your workbench. I bought a Craftsman early on and - it sure is pretty but - it’s too high for this. I don’t want to make that mistake again. What do you recommend for the height of the work bench for this, and how much space would you allow on either side, if it’s a stand alone piece? Thanks in advance! Ashlynn

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman Před 20 dny

      Hey Ashlynn! I’m glad you found it helpful! And no worries 😂 I’m right there with you. Always learning. If you are making your own workbench, you can customize it to exactly your height. Generally speaking, the height of your work benches will range somewhere between your waist and rib cage. The lower the workbench, the more you are leaning over it, but the more power you can get as your muscling through things. The taller it is, the less power you get behind it, but the more ergonomic and close to your eyes it is for fine work. For the router table I have mine at about my belly button. Ideally, you shouldn’t have to muscle anything across the router table, whatever bit you are using should easily cut. I may even opt to have it a little bit higher. However, when you are building that workbench, make sure to take into account the height of the router table. Seems like a stupid reminder, but I make those kinds of mistakes all the time. 😂

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman Před 20 dny

      Phenomenal, and timely, question! In the original design for this coup which had an open floor and we had no issues. When we floored the roosting area (for a variety of reasons) and put wood shavings down, they clogged the track in a day or two. At some level I don’t blame the door because our coup design prevents the shavings from dropping out which is how the track is supposed to self clean. In summary, I think the door is fine, just make sure the area under it is clear so it can clear itself.

    Thanks for this video. I just purchased the same bench plane. I have not done wood working since high school wood shop class (I loved it). Recently I've gotten into woodworking. I read the manual several times was still a bit confused on if my blade was ready for use and how to exactly get everything aligned. Your video along with another one I watched was great. I'm about to sharpen my blade, I purchased a kit to sharpen blades and a bevel guide to sharpen at a particular degree. I'm going to put that 35 degree micro bevel the instructions talk about. Once that's done I'm going to do your trick of testing the edges to ensure the blade is level. Then I'll practice a bit on some scrap wood and then go to town on my real piece that needs some work. Thanks for helping me get things aligned! Cheers.

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman Před 28 dny

      Great question! It really depends on which part of the chicken tractor you’re looking at. For my tractor I didn’t use any joinery but instead used metal brackets and screws or a cross brace and lag bolts to secure corners. Glue will certainly help with rigidity but if you’re securing one of the bottom corners, you’re still better off using cross bracing. @@NorthwestCraftsman thank you for the quick reply. I was thinking for the top of the tractor, which makes the a frame. I'm not very experienced with woodworking, but I just want it to be sturdy enough. Since it will be about 6 feet tall, it shouldn't get hit or anything.

      @NorthwestCraftsman Před 27 dny

      Well, can’t respond fast to all of them I guess 😂 I’m not sure I know how you’re designing your tractor (feel free to shoot me an email). In general a butt joint is pretty weak, though very easy. Screws/glue will help but I’d recommend a cross brace or metal hardware at a minimum, especially if it’s a square or rectangular frame. If you do go ahead and glue it, make sure to use Titebond III since it’s waterproof.

    What kind of joint do you recommend for a door jamb ?

    • @NorthwestCraftsman

      Great question. There are lots of different ways and though I’ve never done a jamb, I’d probably lean into a rabbet, lap, or finger joint where the top meets the side jambs.

    Do you have any recommendations for what to use to hold down a 2 inch wood sphere while drilling?

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman Před 29 dny

      That’s a fascinating question. Round objects are tough to hold, spheres even more so. I haven’t needed to but if I did, a drill vise should be able to get enough purchase on your sphere to keep it from moving. It will also depend how big a hole you’re drilling. If a big one, you may need to create a jig that hugs the sphere and then use some blue tape and super glue to temporarily secure it down.

    Did you replace the cutters with a helical head?

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman Před 29 dny

      Great question. I did and it’s been mostly good though, the helical blades in this machine are not all their cracked up to be. Don’t get me wrong, the finish is great and longevity of the blades is great. But because of the continuous loading on the motor, I trip my breaker frequently when I take anything more than 1/32” passes on hardwood. Doesn’t seem like a big deal but when you’re doing a big project, I’ve sunk hours into planing.

    This has got to be the weakest lacquer I've ever seen. Lacquer is among the hardest wood finishes, much harder than hardwax oils would be expected to provide. My feeling is the lacquer was either: old/expired, very thinly applied, or simply some kind of lacquer varnish that is not what most people think of when aiming for a durable lacquer finish. I can't explain it - because I've used lacquer to much better success - maybe someone else can explain why it's so incredibly weak in this video.

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman Před měsícem

      I appreciate the feedback. I’d love to have the lacquer finish better because it’s so much easier to apply than the others. I’ll be running another test at some point this year and will add another test to see if this was a fluke.

    • @Nistacular
      @Nistacular Před 27 dny

      @@NorthwestCraftsman Also, another possible explanation is that it wasn't full cured. To be fully cured, lacquer often takes a ridiculously long time, maybe a month or so. This will make it significantly harder.

    You mentioned the main issue near the end of the video.... you were using the wrong species of wood. I don't feel like you were having trouble with your staining process. It seems like you were expecting the two different types of wood to look the same by simply matching the color. I'd say you were spot on with your craftsmanship and choice of color, but you overlooked the importance of finding the correct species of wood.

    • @NorthwestCraftsman

    I built my own a few years back but I never knew how efficient it actually was. Something just doesn’t feel right about the shape of the inlet (where the dust enters the cyclone. I feel like there ought to be guiding walls that help channel it towards the outer wall (as opposed to slipping downward right away), especially for lighter material. The whole point of the cyclone is that fine dust too quickly clogs our filter, and so we want to mitigate that. I’ve never had thicker dust or wood chips clog my filter. I want a cyclone solution that really really does well with fine dust. Maybe there needs to be a secondary cyclone?

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman Před měsícem

      Totally get where you're coming from. The reason I went with Oneida is that they have some of the best dust entrainment in the industry; especially in their commercial dust collectors. From an engineering standpoint (my background), a lot of the efficiency depends on the interaction between volumetric flow and the shape of the cyclone (as you suggested). I haven't done a direct comparison with this cyclone but based on the performance of their other models, I assume the engineering was done on this one as well. Actually as one datapoint, at one of the engineering companies I worked for, we used these on 5 gallon buckets to collect plastic powders that averaged a particle size of ~55um. Of course this was on a distribution so we also had particles that were <10um and smaller. These cyclones did a phenomenal job of pulling that all out of the air, meaning we rarely had to change filters on the shop vacs. Regarding your question of a second cyclone, Oneida actually has this as a potential configuration. Below is the link to the dust deputy manual, page 13 has the diagram of what you described. Great minds think alike! www.oneida-air.com/amfile/file/download/file/338/product/857/
