  • If you’re not going to use a slab for your table top, you’ll likely be laminating boards. This is how I did mine and how I almost ruined it all.

I love that there's a CZcams woodworker like you out there still showing people how to build stuff and especially showing us big mistakes/problems and different ways to overcome them. Everyone else seems to be just doing the same "Top 10 Tools" videos over and over. Thanks.

Thanks Sean! That means a lot to me. As a CZcamsr there is a constant battle on whether to “please the algorithm” which is clickbaity and easy or to post more substantive content which doesn’t usually attract the same audience. I’m glad you find this video enjoyable 😊

Glad I found your channel,I’m wanting to do more woodworking with hand tools, bigger Timber-frame style furniture . Hope you do more things like that !

Great to see you Josh. Table looks outstanding so far and can’t wait to see it once it’s finished. Take care my friend. 😊 (Jamie from HP)

Hey Jamie! I remember your handle 😊glad to see you around here as well. Sorry to hear how things are going in the alternate universe of reality. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
Regarding the table, it turned out spectacularly. Can’t wait for the final video to post with the recap.

@23:57 I don't think you consider yourself to be "teaching" woodworking, but, we learn by watching and copying what you are doing. It is really important to us amateur or beginner woodworkers to see how you recover from your mistakes. You probably look at some of the higher end professionals as your "expert", but to newer/more amateur people, you are the "expert" we learn from... and we thank you.
I'm interested in doing something similar with much smaller pieces so I watched you very closely. I thought you mentioned in the beginning that you were joining the boards lengthwise first, and then bring those boards together. Then, you tried to do it all at once which led to the gaps, I suppose.
I'm watching this closely because I'm wanting to do the same thing on a much smaller scale, 2' x 4' with smaller cuts of boards and biscuits.
Your long boards are made up of short boards. So I was thinking, and it seems logical, that you would have arranged the first two long boards and glued the ends of the short boards and the edge of one long board at one time. Then, the dominoes would have aligned the ends of the short boards when you joined the two long boards as you originally planned. Having just switched from using Gorilla Glue to Original Titebond, I'm learning just how fast the glue sets, LOL! So, I would guess you might have to glue and connect, then glue and connect until all the long boards were together before tightening the clamps, or use a slower setting glue.
Does this make sense or am I adding some kind of unforeseen complication?

Hey Buck, your comment really means a lot to me and is humbling. I'm glad you find what I'm doing useful for your work.
Regarding the boards, I originally intended it as one large glue up still, just in that process, glue up the long direction first. The problem I was trying to avoid is if I fully glue and set the ends first, then I need to be very certain the boards are mated perfectly, otherwise the lengthwise seam could be off. I only had one domino on the ends for this build and if I was to do it again, I'd have two dominoes spread about 1/3 & 1/3 across end.
All in all, I will probably try it that way next time because I think it will help to reduce the end gaps I had and simplify the panel glue up. It does take a little more time but may be worth it. Plus panel clamps next time for sure. Man I wish I had some of those to keep it from bowing during clamping. If you have yet to do yours, I highly recommend getting at least a pair.

Again, thanks for the kind comment, means a lot to me. I've only been at this for 3 years now, have learned a ton, and continue to do so.

There's only 2 kinds of mistakes.. ones you can fix and ones you can't. The ones you can't are called Fk Ups. We all do them once in awhile..Theyre both lessons to be learned..Good recovery.... Enjoy'd the vid ..can't wait to see the finale product.

Thanks! That’s probably one of the biggest things I’ve learned in woodworking, recovery 😂 and I think you guys are going to love the final product, trying to get all the video edited but the table turned out even more incredible than I could have hoped.

What video did you make that covers figuring out board feet needed for a build. Looked through your whole vid collection and am unable to find it. Thank you

Hey! Sorry for any confusion. The link was in the description and is here as well. It wasn’t named specifically for calculating board footage which is why it may have been hard to find.
