Chasing Waves in the Arctic: A Surfer's Dream
We took a break from the snow and tested our nerve in the icy Arctic waters of Lofoten, for surfing!
Norway probably isn’t the first place many people think of when it comes to surfing, but in fact Norway has several popular surfing locations, providing waves up to 12 ft!
Just make sure you have a thick wetsuit as the water is icy cold!
We can highly recommend Lofoten Surfsenter (link below), who were fantastic in kitting us out with all the essentials; suits, boards and everything else.
For the ultimate adventure, it’s actually possible to ski and surf in the same day, and there’s not many other places that offer that!
Please also remember that as with any water sport, surfing can be dangerous - make sure you check the weather / water conditions and never go out alone.

very nice video. Rollerskis are great fun, but Holmenkollen is the hardest. Steep and dangerous. So much easier to go flat on track meant for rollerblades etc.
Man they seem friendly 💜💜 just protecting there vibe
Is the hike you would recommend that is similar difficulty that might not be as touristy?
Most norwegians curse these guys, and quite a few norwegians have considered running over them on purpose with the car while they are skiing in the middle of the road, 2-3 wide... Often with a km of cars behind them
What an experience! Did you ever warm up? How long were you guys out?
Magical to experience this kind of cold aswell! We managed to get the heat again with coffee and waffles. Just close to 2 hours❄️
You got a few things confused here, like the bacalao isn't a Norwegian dish, it's I believe Portugese or Spanish.
Yes but it uses the same dried fish.
Looks so stunning! Plan to add it to my itinerary. Question - how demanding was the hike from Trollfjorden up to Trollfdjordhytta? I saw that elevation is 400m and is rather steep. Is it alright for beginner-intermediate hikers? Thanks!
holy how are you guys not famous ? the editing is super good good commentary cool video about surfing in the Arctic circle . How???
A comment that made our day, thanks for the kind words🫶 happy you enjoyed our video🏄♂️ CZcamss algorithm is a bit hard to figure out to be honest. So we just try do make better and better videos🎬
Great watch thank you
Thanks 🙏
So I guess talking was more important than the race.??
As good Movie director, u should know that dialogue is important 😎
@@Becomenorwegian 😀. He he. Well, I thought the headline said "soapbox car race", not "Talking about soapbox car race!" 😁
So 3 foreigners have a channel with that name. Well that is stupid. From a Norwegian.
Nice to see you back in the water 🏄🏼♂️🌊
Good to be back 🏄 a bit chillier than last time though 🥶
We don’t hope any Italians are watching this episode🍝😵💫
Amazing! Stunning! What a spectacular place to surf. I shall never complain about swimming in cold water again. Angus, it must have felt good to be in familiar territory. 😊
Finally the Roo had some home advantage🫶
Too cold for me-keep ward Angus x
Spag-Bol-Sandwich just had to be from somewhere where the Brits once were... and really not surprised it's the Aussies out of this bunch that invented that. xD
Hahah 100%
I am surprised these two didn't show up with knee and elbow pads. I took an interest in biathlon and I don't live near snow, go figure, but I went about learning to skate ski. I have used the larger wheeled pneumatic tired skate ski and the smaller, hard rubber wheeled type. I prefer the pneumatic for the improved stability. I did use elbow and knee pads the first couple of months. Even now, about 4 years later, I can still get the unexpected fall. I have also noticed, that although my technique has improved, overall fitness has diminished. Certainly balance and core strength is better, but rollersking limits how hard I can actually train. It's a bit of a fear factor and practicality. Strength comes, for me anyway, from hill intervals. I can only workout on a hill that is safely negotiable coming back down. Like they say, you can't snow plow, yeah you can V step a bit, but speed builds rather quickly. I have an ankle brake on the right ski, and that can cause uneven braking. There is a bike trail I often use that has a curved descent into a tunnel underpass. It turns to the left, I can't see the whole turn ahead of me because of some brush and bushes. Braking on the right and trying to step turn is almost impossible because to brake you straighten that leg to work the brake. I would like to use the width of the whole trail but dare not in fear that a cyclist could be coming towards me. I also fear the careless person not staying in their lane. It would be a good spot to practice a step turn otherwise. My solution to the fitness issue is to return to cycling, I raced 14-15 years, once upon a time. I can climb any hill I want and come back down under control. I'm still going to rollerski to maintain cross country technique, arm/shoulder strength and balance.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yes stay overnight in tent 👍
We are definitely doing that next time!
wowww they are too 🥶🥶🥶
They Are very reserved but lovely people🇳🇴
Where is the Blaisvatnet hike? Tromso?
Yes exactly!
Thank you!
I didn't realize Pettersen was such a "dick". 🤣
Are you going to share your Birken adventure? Please!?!
Ohh we would love to, but unfortunately Thomas injured his shoulder on a crash just 2 days before Birken. No doctors or physicians were able to speed up the healing process🥲 next year!
Absolute awesome adventure guys. If one of your goals was how to terrify the parents of the 🦘 Kangaroo, job done! I know of the benefits of training with experts, but fellas, what a STEEP learning curve. Looking forward to more adventures & some surfing where we back her down under can relax a little more. Live life 👍 😊.
Pappa kangaroo can luckily be happy that his son is taking all the necessary precautions and knows his own skill level. But yeah maybe a couple more ski sessions before the next big mountain😂
Great video you guys are always giving yourselves a challenge . Great job. I would be terrified as I do not like heights or ski. haha. Cheers
It’s a tough job to become Norwegian😎 haha, maybe not your new hobby, and thanks again for tuning in Bill🍀
The most st I got out of this video is Denim high heels and flip flops 😅
But who actually goes up to random people and give them random compliments? That‘s just weird.
People who like people, guess you haven’t traveled that much around the world👀 it’s quite normal to talk to people, you should try it.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video - great camera work. Stunning scenery and what an experience for you all. Looking forward to your next adventure. 😊
I always meet DNT strangers while hiking in my local area, they really are living the best life. I am envious although they often say I live in of the most beautiful areas. (Sunnmøre Alps). Great video and ad! 10/10
That’s sounds just wonderful! Sunnmøre Alps is on the top of our list😍 both for this last stretch of the winter season and for summer! Thank you very much for your kind Words, we really do appreciate it🫶
Fun video guys! Well done in explaining Norwegian culture! I can relate with trying to become Norwegian, as I've been working on it the past 15 years :)
Thanks ma dude🇳🇴 it’s life long journey, but seems like you have come far⛷️
Thanks man! Yeah I've done some winter trips now that I can't help but be a little bit proud of as a Dutch person :) good luck on becoming more (but not totally!) Norwegian and building your channel, count me in as a new subscriber!
You can definitely be proud of that, especially coming from a flat country like that🏔️ hep hey, thank you! You will forever be our subscriber 969😎
Great work guys. Scenery, information & camera work well presented. 🦘👍
Thank you Papa kangaroo! 🦘
Hello Thomas that is quiet the expedition a;; 3 of you were on. Some hurdles you overcame. How did everyone sleep in the cabin? Hopefully it all worked out ok. Cheers my friend ! Great video !
I a very cool one! We slept very good, it’s part of the trip that there isn’t always a perfect bed waiting for u, but the people and the cabins always make it worth the trip. I think we could have slept on the floor and even then sleep perfect😴 cheers!
Beautiful scenery-thank you
One thing you have clearly adopted perfectly is the lack of consideration for the classic tracks that Norwegian skate skiers display.
Please do enlighten us in what not to do⛷️ We want to make sure to learn all the customs of a xc track.
@@Becomenorwegian The thing is that skate skiers tend to disturb the classic tracks, especially on the traditional standard-width trails, where the middle section isn’t broad enough to allow for skating without sticking part of the ski into and across the classic track. This partially ruins the classic track and causes small piles of snow to fall into the track, making it more difficult to keep up a smooth classic stride. I have just returned from Beitostølen, where many of the tracks have a broad enough middle section to allow for skate skiing, but skaters didn’t seem to keep to those. At one point a track had just been groomed-the grooming machine came towards us-and we were looking forward to pristine tracks after it had passed us. However, in front of us were three skate skiers, and they basically almost canceled the efforts of the grooming machine minutes after. But hey, I’m Danish. Maybe this isn’t a thing among Norwegians … 🙃
Um, bacalao and stockfish is slightly different things. Bacalao is the dish made from the stockfish rather then the stockfish itself.
Very true! We got things a bit confused
Wow, you even got to interview Mr. Northug :D
I got interested in this channel after watching Tyler Walker commenting one of the other videos in here. i guess I will subscribe :)
Yes, the starting point is rigth by Svarttjern. This is one of Norways most popular cross country skiing places. There are a ski stadium, a gas station, Shell, A motel. And houndreds of cabins. :)
Lygna, as in Innland fylke??? Hehehe...I know this place very well. There is NO way to get lost there! :D I think it is!
You would be surprised off where we can get can lost 😂
Very exciting- well done Angus x
I am a local and no locals go there anymore. I think its really after corona that everything blew up with tourists. But theres other reasons too - i think its just way more accessible to people who dont like hiking that much, and therefore you have more of the people with flip flops or high heels who just want photos. The noise is so bad too - people bring drones and theres helicopter tours every hour which just was the final nail in the coffin for me. It truly is beautiful there, but as you say, its just too crowded 🥲
It’s such a shame!
Hi guys, I am moving to Norway for work and life, can you recommend ice rinks near Eidfjord? Cheers.
That sounds like a lovely decision, unfortunately we are not any experts in ice rinks🥸
Unfortunately no ice rink in Eidfjord. The closest could be in Geilo on the other side of Hardangervidda or in Nordheimsund a little longer west
I did’nt see her in the world Champions?
Yay i were There 17-19 because it was a race There😀👍
Have been rolling skiing since 1976 (ya, I am old) and I am still alive! Helmet, gloves and knee pads..... Take your time learning. It is a blast
Impressive! We are looking forward to continuing the exploration in the summer😎
Night skiing looks amazing. You certainly know how to enjoy a Norwegian winter. 😊
10 out of 10 for persistence Thomas - you did it. 10 out of 10 for a great video, Angus.
