PLANKS - USEFUL or USELESS?!?

Are planks useful or useless for running or sprinting? This is a question that has been debated for years and there is no clear answer. In this video, I'm sharing my thoughts on the matter. Planks were a very popular core strengthening and re-balancing exercise but are now not seen as functional. So do they have a use in sports? Aesop likes air time. On the women side Shecarri Richardson runs the tallest with most airtime.
I'm going to guess at top end speed her priority is vertical force.
Thank you
Great take on the subject, I really learn a lot with your videos, I'm trying to go from 12,50 and 25.30 to 10.9 and 22.5 Hope to get there thanks to your knowledge
Great videos and deserve so many more views.
Good video explaining it in a real life style, but still I hate Rob Zombie's version of Michael Myers. Michael Myers is supposed to be this pure evil force of nature with a supernatural edge who kills at random, as John Carpenter originally intended the character to be.
Most important video in your channel, learn something about life as well

Conan is my favourite film ever and that is the funniest reference I've ever seen, how did he ever figure that conan ate the others that's fucking hilarious 😂🎉😂😂
dude is such an expert man he deserves more subscribers,
holy shit one of the most complete video on sprinting ive ever watched but so poorly produced, but in a cute kinda way. guys knows his shit, subscribed. the only part i question is that if u have a wind with you, you get more vertical force? dont the wind blow horizontally? shouldnt it be more horizontal force?
I never want to see that jump off the roof again in my life....
Thank you essop for eye poking us at the outro.
What a sweet bro.
Brilliant
awesome video as always. keep making these videos!!👐👐
Can u start implementing timestamps …
You said the lever should be shorter by flexibility in the quads so just focus on frontside mechanics and not trying to actively tuck the hamstring to but. Flexibility in thr quads naturally allow it to tuck perfectly
Even after 7 years the content of this clip is pure gold. Thanx
Amazing opening! Legit made me laugh! Thank you! 🎃
If you are super weak at it, it matters... You will have more force production and more control by being good at this movement. It will aid to confidence in your other physical activities ( sprinting ).
Athletes tend to be strong as per their body weight. If an athlete is considered "weak" for that body weight but has descent speed, making them more powerful without adding bodyweight will usually help. Their body confidence will rise and this will allow them to perform better.
If an athlete has low explosive power, raising that explosive power thru cleans and plyos can improve their power output and control and improve their sprinting times. If they are at a mid level in sprinting, if that athlete could have a stronger core. If that athlete can have stronger feet, ankles and calves for control then strengthening all of these factors can improve their level of performance. My believe is the proper use of weights ( a tool ) will allow someone to improve strength factors more quickly than body weight only.
Very interesting
Just discovered your channel and have been watching your videos; you are a genius. Really helpful info, thanks a lot.
Excellent
Thanks a lot, this was really helpful
It's 10% bodyweight is including sled weight + plates weight?
There is a big "top name" athlete on the female side who had probably some of the worst acceleration but the best top end speed in her game. So she was usually dusted to 50/60m, but then she turned on the jets. Between season she was doing sled work like a football player, now her starts and acceleration are more near the front of the pack than the back. Plus her stride is more effortless and thoughtless than it was before.
This is awesome! Shelly Anne Frazier Price was just talking about "fear". It's a huge distraction.
Watched the vid, the 90% rule for the 400m is about right... I agree. It also keeps it simple without a lot of formulas. Keeping it simple is the mark of hi intelligence.
I didn't watch the vid yet, but the best way to improve the 400m for people who aren't at least "mid" level at it. Say ( 47-50 seconds for a high schooler ) is to improve your 100m time. If your 100m stride doesnt' have enough power, you just don't have enough speed and isn't efficient enough, you would be best improving your 100m speed thru your plyos, your speed work, your body composition, etc and improve your 100m. Your 200m and 400m would improve just from having more speed. Now I'm going to watch the vid and see what Aesop says.
Amazing! Fantastic series!
I loved this entire series! It gives me a whole new appreciation of the Zombie films, even though they have always been my favorite take on the Mihael Myers mythos. Thank you for your insights!
So basically Kim found "new life" near the middle to the end of his career with the addition of weight training which he had been ignoring all of those years. That new life, new energy, new strength revitalized him and gave him renewed confidence to keep going. As long as we take care of our bodies it will take care of us. And most of the decreases in speed, stride length and reaction may very well have always been "use it or lose it" situations. I do know as i got older that the attention i recieved from society in general was not good for my body, so i have to be in phenomenal condition to counter it.
Basically if you stay in it, training and taking care of the body you will be in it... He perhaps could have done it 5 more years. What happens as people get older and they have done everything is their desire will wain and this will kill performance. Or that they have accumulated injuries and this caused some desire to be lost and mental blocks and they give it up. But if you train the body and take good care of it, it'll perform alot longer than you think it will.
I didn't watch your video. Out of all of the lifts heavy deadlifts completely overloads my CNS. What it means for me is in athletic movements after doing dead lifts i won't have as much control, due to the nervous system being fried. So speed will be down and accuracy in foot placements will be down. If the premise is deadlifts are a great lift for building over all body strength and also contributing to a strong posterior chain and used in the non peak sprinting period can give you this strength in your body, which will be useful in the sport then i certainly agree.
You didn't feel like pistol squats don't add body control which might be useful in athletics and sprinting?
This is another great vid
nice having a two part video series 9 months apart
I always find myself rewatching these videos every 6 months or so. By far the most nuanced and re-watchable sports performance videos on CZcams. I always learn something new even from a video I’ve already watched more than 5 times. Started watching when I was in my late teens and you dumped so much knowledge most of it went over my head. Now as an older, smarter, and more mature athlete I am really starting to grasp all of the brilliance you laid out for us far before many of the main stream coaches on this platform.
This doesn’t make any sense…
Thank you for this series so many online trainers get you halfway there than add in a bunch of words they don’t explain to get you to subscribe while you actually break it all down
I wish I have found you earlier, I have been watching your videos all day, you got the best info I've see after 1 year of searching. I prayed for some guidance and found you today. My coaches don't know anything and now I am a senior, on a team with only 3 girls. I've done pretty good, but we start the season running laps, then sprinting around March and championship is May. I've been in gym myself all off season, I am going to start sprinting today. Thanks for all the great info!
Hi Essop. I just want to let you know that you did a great job with this video. I found you about 6 years ago with that marathoner vs sprinter video and then gobbled up all your content. Your channel deserved a lot more attention when you were working hard to produce these earlier videos. I think there are some more complicated factors at play in regards to why you channel never took off. IMHO I wouldn't be surprised if CZcams deprioritized your content because 'hormones' are a big no no discussion topic in the modern world. The people in power know about hormones and they use hormone manipulation in the public as a control mechanism and political tool. It's important to keep the publics understanding on hormones skewed. Thanks for speaking truth. I hope you are healthy and well.
I love your videos, but I'll have to disagree on this one. I can't talk for the sprinting comuminty as a whole, but my experiences have been through clubs volunteering their time in non proffit organisations helping athletes participate in the sport. I believe it's for different reasons. The culture of sprinting is elitist. Many clubs pressure athletes to compete in club leagues, etc, leading to the importance of times. The power of 10 is a perfect example. I have not seen boot camps for sprinting (I might start one 🤔) for the general public who just want to learn and gain benefits from sprinting without competing, unlike sports such as bodybuilding, health camps etc. Even at the world stage, you are nobody unless you're first (which leads to drugs, cheating, etc). It's very hard to just train for the enjoyment and benefits towards your health if you dont know anything about sprinting. Funding only goes to the best atheletes, which again leads to nassiatic behaviours of trying to be the best. Its better for companies to invest in higher probability of success on atheletes who are more likely to succeed and give them profit. In other words, I dont think it's the type of people who ruin the progression of sprinting economics, but the environment they are placed in, creating outcomes of selish people. I've even seen it in coahes favourtising athletes because it makes them look good as if they're the reason the athlete fast, leading to higher career options.
Thank you for the subtitles, greatly appreciated!
Thanks Essop. While it is true what you said, however there is the elephant in the room. It is the undeniable benefit of running and how it is not yet fully capitalized. One cannot deny the underdevelopment of this sports, especially when it comes to marketing to the general public. I do think though that with the right direction and the right promotion with a modest investment, it could be done though. Do note that most of the facility is publicly owned amongst other and also do note that running is perhaps the cheapest form of exercise you could do. Is there a role for say a sporting shoes sponsored events that raise public health awareness about running, especially in place where public health is strong like the NHS? Tuan
