I'm not sure I share the same sentiment about service careers. I feel like plenty of people, including myself, chose those careers due to some combination of peer pressure, prospect of fulfillment, and just not really knowing all the ins and outs. Wanting to be a biologist, I hadn't considered the amount of unpaid work or just the whole rat race to impress higher ups until it was too late. Regardless, I'm surprised more eyebrows weren't raised about the responses to the "if all your basic needs were met"- hypothetical. It was just a very unrealistic, rosy solution to a bigger problem.

I mean, most teachers put the same amount of effort into it as cheaters do. But they got their college degrees though so that must mean they are automatically great at their job right?... diplomas and degrees mean nothing if you don't have anything to offer this world. If it's about making more money in the future than put all that time and effort into something else other than college and focus on that, unless of course you know what you want already and getting there requires a degree and all that stuff.

Think about what you've accomplished and what you feel defines you. Think about parts of your background that have shaped your life. Ultimately, every application essay you write will be about you, as it should be the easiest thing to write about, and it will give admissions officers an idea of who you are. Thanks for posting this video, Danielle. This is a very timely reminder. It's interesting that many colleges and universities have set aside standardized testing submission requirements. Over the last two years, the average composite scores of both the SAT and ACT tests have decreased. While a handful of schools had waived the need to submit scores prior to the pandemic, the list of schools no longer requiring them (at least through 2023) has increased quite a bit. They include some schools that traditionally have relied upon those scores when determining admission standards. I'm kind of "iffy" when it comes to waiving submission of these test scores. I understand why some schools are doing this. Underrepresented groups often underperform on standardized tests. If they are a vital part of a school's admission standards, then the school is placing the potential for admission well outside of reach for many such students. Many elite high schools not only stress preparation for such tests, but they also coach their students in how to master the test. This places students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds at a disadvantage when admission is largely based upon ranks from point systems that emphasize such tests. A student who struggled to find the funds to simply pay for the test is at a disadvantage to the student who has been coached for three years to master the test. At the same time, many students now take their ACT or SAT more than once and focus on the highest individual score or a hybrid "superscore" used by many colleges. Again, this places students of lower economic standing at a disadvantage. In fact, elite schools even contact the students and their parents regarding the opportunities to retake the test and improve their scores/superscore. That said: I believe that these tests are still important. They are a good barometer of an applicant's academic abilities. A student with a lower score would likely struggle at more academically-intensive programs and/or schools. Most public universities have enrollment standards for which the SAT and ACT might help influence a student's decision whether to enroll in that program (or influence the school's decision to accept an applicant into that particular program). I believe that both test organizations should restructure their testing programs with these things in mind. The students should be coached by the testing organizations beforehand -- letting them know how to prepare for years before their first attempt. Moreover, the programs should replace the schools by coaching the students with knowledge about potentially retaking the test (to improve their scores/superscore) with information on how to better prepare for each section. In line with your own conclusion, I think that these test organizations might help redirect students who perform poorly on the tests. A student with a below-average score probably won't gain acceptance into elite schools. In fact, they may struggle to gain admission into many state universities. However, that isn't always the best place for students who might struggle academically in certain fields. A high school graduate can succeed in life without a college degree. Whether they attend a trade school, simply work their way up through life or even start their own business, it is possible for success to come in different ways. I live in Palo Alto, California. One day, I offered some items on either Freecycle or Nextdoor. One of the men who responded to my post is a local contractor living in Palo Alto. I just happened to be outside when he picked them up and we struck up a conversation. It turns out that he was raised in Palo Alto by two successful and well-educated parents (both were Stanford grads). Yet, this man made a conscientious decision to forego college. Instead, he learned a trade (carpentry) and eventually opened his own company. His business is extremely successful too. He remarked that he has earned more money that either of his parents while still doing what he loved. Obviously, a college graduate has greater opportunities than someone without a degree. This is shown in Labor Department stats. Yet, I wonder how many students are being set up for failure by being corralled into university educations for which they aren't really prepared. Some will major in that niche field for which there are very few employment opportunities. That college graduate may finish school with enormous student loan debt. In the end, they might have been happier by the prospect of entering a trade with little or no debt. Thanks again for this fantastic video! I wish that I would have found a channel like this before I began my own college admission strategies.

"High Interest Savings" does not exist. Real inflation, even 2yrs ago, was in the range of 10%. You cannot keep your fiat money in a savings any more than you can put it in a mattress. The reason so many people use these cliche' topics for their essays is because it has been working for them up to this point. Their teachers, parents, fellow students, the media (especially social media) have all led them down the primrose path of victimhood exploitation. Now, look at the most successful people, from any culture or ethnicity or background, and you'll find a common trait: personal responsibility. On the other hand, look at the least successful people. What trait do they exhibit? Victim mentality. This is encouraged by the established agencies and institutions in order to support the underpinning bureaucracies. Very few studies are published on this topic because they would have a self-destructive effect. Try to imagine a PhD candidate trying to conduct a study on the deleterious effect of victim mentality on a portion of the population. S/he would be a pariah. The paradox of independent thought in academia is that it's encouraged as long as it follows and expounds on the accepted narrative.

I hope those that are trying to get into these colleges don't exit college with debt. Otherwise, you should have gone to state schools. The only advantage of going to well known schools is the contacts you make which is only useful in certain majors. Starting your adult life with debt is never a good thing. Debt in general is not a good thing. It takes away your freedom to explore different avenues of employment.

I think if I were to write mine again after having the emotional journey I've had in college, that it would be much more accurate to my experience. Life has a lot of it's challenges, and I always hid in books, coming up with solutions to problems I was interested in, and making a world on campus that gave me some kind of peace. I was always really poor, but it helped frame the world in a more honest way. I never felt like this hand I was dealt was influcted on me, just that the resources made available to me as I prooved myself deserving were curious, and then thrilling. Well I don't have to actually write it, but I think that gives the character to the thing I would probably write. Nothing was new to college, it's just a bunch of stuff I've only recently come to terms with.

Should people be having these essays edited? The point of the essay is to provide the admissions department a clear picture of who is applying; that includes their thought process and their writing ability. Our education system has enough flaws without skewing the application/admissions selection process toward those who know and can afford to hire an editor.

College is worthless unless you want to be indoctrinated into a loser mentality. If you really have a passion to be the best in a certain field then you will only waste time and money just for a worthless piece of paper that congratulates you for regurgitating their dogmatic bullshit. If you really have passion for a field then you can find all the information needed without paying high tuition fees and having to take un- needed social studies bullshit classes about pronouns and how NOT to use them in any meaningful way. Sorry but not sorry, If your pronouns are They/Them that means you are either really bad at grammar or you are schizophrenic. College it seems has been infiltrated by psycho's that want nothing better than to destroy your children and our country while pretending to be higher education.

what a complete waste of everyone's time. admissions "officers" can't actually predict how well a candidate will do in college based on their admissions essay. they might as well just flip a coin instead of reading any of the essays and call it a day, at least that way, none of their biases (racism, sexism etc.) will get into the admissions process. and that's setting aside the fact that one can just pay someone to write an essay for a cost that would be negligible compared to all the other "college prep" expenses.

It's interesting. When I applied for a 4-year college, they technically asked me to do an essay. I'm like 'nah,' turning in several chapters of a fictional story I had written instead. They actually accepted me based on it. Mind you, I asked if I could just submit my writing sample beforehand due to the short timeframe. Why did they accept it? I think that it's because few people, if any, had taken that route before. Also, it showed the fact that I could formulate my thoughts on paper. Furthermore, of the time of the application, I my funding was grants and scholarships for disability.
