Good question! Right now it’s pretty manageable, but December last year was insane. If you submit before October you will miss most of the rush!

    1. Learn to use em dashes
    2. Learn to use parenthesis functionally, instead of replacing commas with them.
    3. Avoid etc. It is used informally, and you should avoid putting general details, or assume that the officers are going to tacitly understand.
    4. Avoid broad statements about life, (e.g in life we should enjoy the simple things). Because they are probably cliche, your experience in life is limited, and for a adult is a little hard to read.
    5. Avoid perpetually, continuously or similars.Your life experience is limited, and you probably haven't had much time to do something like that. Focus on the intensity to which you do it.
    6. Avoid breaking the fourth wall. It might take the reader out of the immersion in your story.
    7. Use proper nouns. It gives the noun weight. Saying the specific number amounts on hours is also useful.
    8. Avoid being too positive. Bring complexity and communicate maturity.
    9. Avoid leaving out critical content to understand your story. Do not count on the fact that the officers will figure out where do you come from.
    10. Make emphasis in the fact that your story illustrates just one step in your continuous growth. Also, communicating humility is useful.

I'm not sure the em dashes matter, since when I enter it into the common app, it turns back into a single en dash.
Maybe if I upload from google drive it's different, I haven't tried that. Either way, it means they'll be getting a ton of essays with en dashes even when someone does it correctly.

Start out by making a list of what to include in your essay. Take all of those items and summarize them for your opening and closing paragraphs. Then expand on each item by 50 to 100 words. It cuts down the time of actually writing your essay in half.

Ideally, if you want to apply to a lot of selective colleges, you want to write and rewrite, cater your essays to the interests of each college, and get tips from people who are close to you who can give you a second opinion. I would allot 3 months to really honing on your essays, but given your capabilities, you may need more or less.

Hi! Your videos are very helpful and I really learned a lot from them! As a junior, I want to ask that if it is ok to talk a little bit about race in the essay(no radical views involved, I am up for racial equality) and some of my ideas after reading diverse opinions about the topic. Hopefully you see the comment and are able to give me an answer! Thanksss

I'm afraid. I don't know what to write. I'm in junior year, I have some topics but I cannot manage to either be concise enough to get my point across or I get no ideas on what to write. HALP
