Thank you so much for your advice! Not too long ago I finished writing my personal insight questions for the UC's and had such a hard time being able to write just trying to be myself. I thought getting my essays revised would help but it only confused me and pressured me to fix everything my counselor thought needed to be fixed. I still have to write essays for private colleges and I'm going to follow your advice because I feel like I can show the admissions officers who I am just with my words and without having to edit my essays so much I can't even tell it's me. Thank you so much for this video... like honestly thanks. :)))))))))

Hate to take advantage of the comment section, but I wanted to ask, can I start an essay by saying directly that I didn't know how to start my essay for a really long time, and also, how do colleges react to humor?! REALLY confused right now!!
Hey I know this is an old video but I'm trying to find inspiration to write my application essays lol. I'm not very creative so do you think writing about the "power of positivity" would be an okay topic? I was going to talk about how changing my mindset had bettered my life to try to fit the generic prompt that is something along the lines of "describe a perspective of belief that makes you who you are". Would writing about positivity be too vague and/or cliche in your opinion? Thanks.
I’m glad you asked. Yes, it’s definitely too vague/cliche. I read a TON of essay that make vague references to changes in perspective and most often they assume the reader will appreciate the change in perspective, without them being able to articulate how exactly it happened. If you have a very specific, clear, and direct story on how your mind changed from one way to another, then that’s okay. But you need to focus on HOW the change happened and only tangentially discuss the change itself.
Still, it’s a very very common trend to write about a vague mindset shift, so I would warn against it. I’ve editing 200+ essays now and those have been the least effective by far. They also don’t give the opportunity for the reader to know what’s unique about YOU.

So I'm thinking of writing about my experience being mixed race, giving specific examples of how it impacts my life and how it's made me more open-minded and willing to consider different perspectives. But how would I know if it would be interesting to other people? I mean, I'd be interested in an essay from someone who's mixed, but that's probably just because I am mixed and I like to read other mixed people's perspectives...
Idk anything, but I think the gem in this idea is what you've learned from growing up as a mixed person and not growing up itself

Probably not uncommon, but less common than some of the REALLY common topics. I think it would be a solid choice, in the sense they you have the potential to make it your own. Technically I wrote about learning English, which I would say is a very common topic, just with an uncommon angle.
