32 - 1 Samuel 9-10 - God Changed His Heart
God accepted the demand of the children of Israel to give them a king like the other nations. God chose Saul of the tribe of Benjamin to be the first human ruler over Israel. We tend to think that Saul was a bad king and perhaps even evil. However, God did not choose a bad man to be king as if He was punishing Israel. As we examine the character of Saul as he is introduced in scripture and the signs that God gave to indicate His choice of Saul, we learn that God chose a man who had all the characteristics to be a successful leader. The scriptures compare him to Boaz, Moses, and Joshua. There is even a hint that ties him to the coming of Yeshua.

As Samuel began his tenure as judge over Israel, the ark of the covenant was in the house of Abinadab in Kirjath Jearim. The tabernacle that had housed the ark in Shiloh was apparently destroyed. Eventually, a new tabernacle was built and, for some reason, placed in the city of Nob. Clearly, Israel was still in disarray as it struggled to understand how the ark had been captured in the first pl...

    1. How will Israel’s return from exile be like the exodus from Egypt? 2. In what way is the Valley of Achor a door of hope? 3. The Hebrew word cherem, #2764, is complicated in that it appears to have meanings that are opposite of each other; ie: devoted and dedicated, accursed and doomed. How are these apparently opposite meanings connected? What does it really mean to be consecrated in terms of the broad definitions of cherem? In what way does Achan fulfill or fit these varied definitions of cherem? 4. Israel prospered at the time of Jeroboam despite the clear warnings in the Torah from Moses and the words spoken by Hosea about service to other gods. How is their devotion or dedication of their prosperity to foreign gods like the sin of Achan? 5. What other insights did you gain from this teaching?
