  • God accepted the demand of the children of Israel to give them a king like the other nations. God chose Saul of the tribe of Benjamin to be the first human ruler over Israel. We tend to think that Saul was a bad king and perhaps even evil. However, God did not choose a bad man to be king as if He was punishing Israel. As we examine the character of Saul as he is introduced in scripture and the signs that God gave to indicate His choice of Saul, we learn that God chose a man who had all the characteristics to be a successful leader. The scriptures compare him to Boaz, Moses, and Joshua. There is even a hint that ties him to the coming of Yeshua.
