  • So far in the book of Samuel, there have been numerous contrasts. The wives of Elkanah, Hannah and Peninah, present a contrast between a woman who loves God and one who loves her position. Samuel, the son of Elkanah and Hannah, serves the LORD while Hophni and Phineas, the sons of the high priest Eli, serve only themselves. These two chapters in 1 Samuel present another contrast going from a time that the word of the LORD is rare in Israel to a time that prophecy returns. The leadership of Israel passes from Eli to Samuel. As the time of Eli ends, the ark of the LORD is captured by the Philistines who also destroy the city of Shiloh and the glory of the LORD departs from Israel. However, there is hope because God raised up Samuel as His spokesman.
