Making my own tools - Scratch Awls.
A few years ago I made my own Awl based off of an awl that's always been in my dad's toolbox. Recently I've been thinking of things I could sell at craft markets to use up some of my old scrap wood and pay for new wood!
The last few time's I've been at markets I found a few people would admire what I have made but tell me that they or their partner/friend/relative does woodwork and makes similar products. So I thought I would like to make something that perhaps those people would buy for themselves or a woodworker or craftsperson in their life and making a batch of Awls seemed like a good idea!
I made my awl from an old drill bit and a brass plumbing fitting but for this big batch of awls I didn't want to use drill bits and found silver steel rod would be easy to heat treat and strong enough to stand up to lots of use.
I could shape the rod in a drill against my belt grinder then heat treat with a garden blowtorch and quench in water before tempering in the oven. Out of the ten pieces I cut I had 3 that were too wonky to straighten after tempering but the silver steel rod was so cheap I didn't worry about them.
I turned the handles on the lathe and this was a nice job to do on the lathe, I had to make the tenons for the plumbing fittings accurate to fit them well with no gaps and then I could turn the rest of the handles by eye.
I sold all of my first batch at a little pop up store I put on and had to make a second batch!

Making A Little Open Cabinet From Mitred Boxes
zhlédnutí 502Před 3 měsíci
I had some maple and tawa wood lying around in my scrap bin and I was going to makes some serving boards from them... but I couldn't help thinking they'd make a nice little open cabinet/set of shelves. I don't really make square things often, so this was really out of my comfort zone! But I had recently made a set of shelves for my workshop very quickly (just plywood screwed together) and peopl...
Making A Three Legged Stool

I've been doing a lot of reading up about stick chairs lately (mostly the Lost Arts Press stick chair book) and I've been watching lots of videos about making them too and finally decided to dip my toes into the stick chair world with a simple 3 legged stool. I really wanted a stool for my workshop and made myself one out of Ash and then I had just enough walnut lying around so I decided to mak...

Inspired by the brushes I saw Anna Robinson and Aspen Golan making I ordered a box of brush fibres a few years ago now. I've made a few brushes since then but it took me a long time to get around to making this video! I used Tampico fibres that I ordered from Caddy Supply www.caddysupply.com/products/natural-tampico-fiber but I'm sure you could do the same thing with other fibres, I've seen peo...

We moved house last year and after months of storing builders tools and moving boxes etc I could finally start work on setting up my workshop. I needed to paint, line the walls in the lathe area, build storage shelves and cupboards and find places for all of my tools. I decided to cover building a workbench in this video too as I just wanted to get on with it and make it without filming every d...
Converting My Wooden Bike into an E-bike
zhlédnutí 1,6KPřed 11 měsíci
About four years ago I built a wooden bike and it's been working great! I decided to see if I could convert my wooden bike in to an Ebike using a front hub motor conversion kit I bought online. My kit came with a 350watt front hub motor which hopefully is just enough to help me up the hills and won't put too much stress on the frame. I haven't cycled very far on it yet but so far I've been impr...

This is a compilation of my wooden bike build videos from 2018, I noticed that lots of people watched the first video but only about a third of the people watched the second and third videos and I figured maybe it would've been better to make one shorter video... so here that is! Sorry if you've seen them before, but I'm sure you'll be glad to know the bike is holding up great and I've cycled i...
Making Simple Wooden Toy Cars

Just a short video on making a couple of simple wooden toy cars, I made these for friends who had babies last year. I used google images to search for car silhouettes and printed them out. The main part of the cars are made out of Ash and I used Walnut for the wheels with a store bought hardwood dowel to join them. I really like using a hole saw to make the wheels as its really quick, accurate ...
